I used to work at the commissary. I just want you to know as a fellow Marine- all of the posts about “quality” and giving service members and veterans what they deserve is hollow and meaningless to me having worked at the Twentynine Palms Commissary on board the MCAGCC. I worked at the commissary under Doolittle and then another Director. Under Doolittle, the Meat Department had employees rewrapping and re-dating meat. As a new employee at the time, it seemed peculiar but I was assured it was ok. When I found the policy that said it wasn’t and brought it to Meat Manager’s attention, she brought me into her office and said that if I didn’t feel comfortable doing something, I don’t have to do it. After I refused to continue rewrapping and relabeling meat, the meat started building up in the freezer. I posted the Marine Corps Leadership traits on the Meat Department bulletin board, and posted Honor Courage and Commitment, and what it means to serve aboard a Marine Base. I was written up and this was used against me when seeking a promotion.
I reported the issue to my superior after one of the meat wrapping employees angrily yelled and cursed at me in the sales floor because I wasn’t rewrapping the expired meat.
That manager is still working at that commissary. An internal investigation, I was told, showed my claims were unsubstantiated, despite my having been directed to do it and also witnessing other employees doing it (whom are no longer at the commissary as far as I know).
I submitted an ICE complaint to the base command, whom shrugged it off and said it wasn’t their problem because DECA isn’t under their command.
We preach about “see something, say something,” we preach about whistleblowing for the sake of safety, but when it comes down to it, no one does anything until someone gets sick or dies.

Does the commissary have everything a Kroger or Walmart grocery would have?
Does it have keto bread, cauliflower rice, frozen avocado chunks, PRIME drinks, tahini etc.

I remember when I was a kid going to the commissary with my dad who was a military police and my mom who was a Air Force and my older brother and younger sister the bags would all be paper bags and whenever we would get done unloading the bags I would make costumes out of them the good old days 😂

My grandpa used to be a butcher in a former Commissary in Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt in Exmouth, Australia. He was also a retired U.S. Navy veteran despite being born and raised in the Philippines and he also was in the Vietnam War. So to let you know Americans are used to stuff like Mountain Dew and they don’t care about what’s in it.

Now, this brought back memories. My dad was USAF and the weekly trips to the commissary were a family ritual. My Boy Scout troop would bag groceries on Saturdays to raise money. Today, of course, it’s trips to COSTCO. The commissary would paint arrows on the floor to indicate the desired flow of foot traffic. I wonder if they still do that…

I don't remember if this was in all Navy commissaries, but I remember lining up with my mom to wait for someone to tell you which register to go to. It would've been handy at the civilian grocery stores I've worked at.

If I'm remembering correctly from my days as a navy brat, the Commissary also didn't charge the local tax on what would be taxable items off base.

1 Question, 1 Comment. Being a 100% Rated Disabled Vietnam Vet I've always believed that you had to be, Retired, Active Duty or like myself a 100%er to have access to the Commissary is that your Understanding? I shop at the Commissary at Maelstrom AFB in Great Falls, MT. 32% savings from either Walmart or Albertson's. Every Time. Look Up Commissary Mission Statement.

Some overseas commissaries are unfortunately not so great. You can get better prices on the economy on many foods unless you want processed food from home. Those you need to get from commissary
