Vtec Challenge 2018 Oulton Park Race 1

  • Since the 750 Hot Hatch season has finished and we're riding high on a wave of success, what better way to keep the season going by challenging some of the fastest Honda's racing in the UK AND Ireland ( Ulick Burkes supercharged DC2 from the ITCC turned up for a go as well).
    We joined the Vtec Challenge for their last round of the year at Oulton Park, for a laugh and to see how we would get on with the cars that have had all season to develop, no championship pressure.
    Quali did not go quite how I wanted. I wish I was filming, but I rarely film quali. Slow out of the gate, oulton hasn't been my best circuit and again sometimes you just dont gel with a place. Got a time in that was good enough for second behind Chris Sparks and his mad power house of a boosted EK, I have no idea whats in that thing. Then with a clear lap I decided to put the hammer down and go for it. Coming up to druids I was on a mission and 8 tenths up on my previous lap which would of put me on pole, and I was hoping to clear the second faster range by the finish line. But, I lost it half way round druids, either trail braking too late or touching the grass, biggest snap oversteer and the mother of all hail mary's as I pinned it and went backwards towards the wall in a cloud of Essense de Dunlop. Pinning it worked and I dragged the rear round the corner and managed to exit! However, it flicked back on the power with too much lock on and spat me around 180 and I went fairly gracefully into the tyres. Rear 1/4 damge, front 1/4 and bumper damage as the wall spun me. Not too bad, just an afternoon of unbending things in the paddock.
    Come the race and I knew I had to be a dick, beat the turbo off the line, cut infront and protect the first turn. Which I did , but it didn't stop Chris being on it straight away and challenging into cascades, and then power past down the straight.
    The rest is in the video, but what a tussle we had, it was great fun!
    Seriously had to send it though, Chris brakes were great and he had me beat on power, but there was one corner where I had a big advantage, so I had to formulate a plan fast and commit.
