Complications during root canal treatment

Instrument separation: During root canal treatment, dental instruments are used to clean and shape the root canals. However, there is a risk of instruments breaking or separating within the tooth, particularly if the canals are narrow or curved. If a broken instrument cannot be retrieved, it may require additional treatment, such as surgical removal or filling the tooth with a different material.
Perforation: Root canal treatment involves removing the infected or damaged tissue from the inside of the tooth. However, there is a risk of inadvertently perforating the tooth, which is creating a hole in the tooth or damaging the surrounding structures, such as the root or the adjacent tooth. If a perforation occurs, it may require additional treatment, such as sealing the perforation with a special material or, in severe cases, extraction of the tooth.
Postoperative complications: After root canal treatment, patients may experience postoperative complications, such as swelling, bruising, or discomfort in the treated area. These are usually mild and temporary, but in rare cases, they may be more severe or prolonged, and may require additional medical attention.
It's important to note that while these complications can occur during root canal treatment, they are relatively rare. The majority of root canal procedures are successful in treating the underlying dental issue and relieving pain and discomfort.
