Cliff was so good, so good. There ain't any that come even close. He plays those crazy bass lines on the recorded stuff on the albums, but live, he is adding on top pf everything a little extra, just because he can... He had a unique talent for the bass guitar. Lars and James saw him on stage at a concert and said that "that dudes going to be our bass player". And in Lars like fashion, he made it so. You don't have to like Lars or his drumming, but without the little Danish fellow, we wouldn't have the kind of metal music we have... I love the man, he has never been one to shy away from a fight about an issue he had a problem with. He is the driving force behind Metallica, always has been, he is the one making things move along and keeping the band in the black. He is the engine that keeps the thrash metal scene afloat.
Cliff Burton is not only talented but is musically trained with classical music background. He understands music on a whole different level. The first three Metallica albums were so varied and so good is partly and hugely because of Cliff.
Lars has also been really good with helping arrange their songs. Look at enter sandman where he said Kirk’s riff in the beginning needs to go here and etc. he knows how to compose and place the riffs idk why people discredit him.
Hi Cliff!!! Cliff's headbanging was EPIC! Such a nice guy, so talented and passionate about music. They were so young and pissed off - which is why it suited me perfectly lol. I was there - Day on the Green, hotter than hell and didn't have a care in the world - except for the massive headache the following day.
Pastor Of Muppets...great nick 🤣 This was the time, whne you didn't have to be a world class tenor to be a vocalist. You didn't have to play by the click for the whole show to be a drummer, and when an attitude and show was much more important than playing perfectly clean. And that was what I tried to mimick when I played guitar on my bedroom, along with all of their albums, sometimes over 6 hours straight. Year was 1992-1993. Poor neighbours.
Props to the camera man who captured what might be the preeminent Cliff performance. From the intro (of the actual song, not the little solo he did before it starts) where Cliff improvises and does that crazy run and his hair waiving in the wind as he headbangs, to the second verse where he pounds on the bass and makes a fist then then points to his eyes in the "Stranger now, are his eyes..." part, he could've easily been focusing just on James as he sang.
Love this reaction.. when cliff em all came out in the late 80's I watched it over and over, this song included, was always one of my favorite performances
It's the one VHS tape I'm never getting rid of. I remember my mind being blown seeing Metallica playing live in all the different eras they'd played up to that point going up to them being on their first major tour with Ozzy.
1985,these guys hadn't even gotten close to the main stream yet and were still playing to packed area's,and would tour with Ozzy the following year to promote Master Of Puppets.
I just saw that I just noticed it and it was like really quick that is so cool I never saw that until you mentioned it and I watched this video countless times. Good call
Love what you both said in the first pause...bc that's Cliff. Anyime Metallica talks about him...that's where they go with it, he was just always in that "zone". 😁 True legend, wish we could have seen him talk more down the line.
1985,long before the black album, these guys were playing to packed arenas before most of the world even knew who they were,I never heard them until 1986 after hearing Master of puppets Playing in a record store.
many of my friends from high school were at this show...it's a shame I wasn't....but so amazing to be able to witness this....priest, ozzy, scorps, yngwie, metallica, what the hell else do you want???
His Dad, Ray Burton, used to tell the story Cliff used to go to his Dad and complain that his neck hurt and he didn't understand why? His Dad would reply "What do mean you don't understand why your neck hurts?! Your head doesn't stop moving when you're playing the bass!" In short Cliff Burton headbanged so much he didn't even notice it! It was just a normal, everyday thing to him.
Man. They are sooooo young! Just imagine having Cliff around still. He was so fawkn good in his early 20s that it is just insane! EDIT. Apparently I keep watching y'all react to this😂

Hi, your intro is freaking amazing! You guys are in a band snd i love the sound, nice and heavy! Awesome! Metal till i die, thanks for reacting to any Metallica songs! Rick and thrash on guys@! 🤟🤘💪 I subscribed! Thank you!
U guys shoudl react to Master of Puppets Seattle 89 WITH that amazing -to live is it do die- intro. Greatest Metal song and greatest perfomance of all time, in my humble opinion
I think Metallica was at the Whiskey-a-go-go and were hanging out either before or after their set. They heard what they thought was a guitar solo that was just nuts. So they have to go see who is playing this s#!t. Then they see that he (Cliff) is playing a bass. WOW!! After Cliff gets done they pull him aside and get him to join the band and give their old bass player the heave-ho.
I forgot how bad the camera work is on this....haha...they were partying...they caught some good stuff but...one camera angle?..should have had more...but at the end right into 4 horsemen..I love it
i hope u understand u withnessing greatnes here, this is prob the best bas solo that have ever been, he ripped that bas like it was a guitarr, he was redic and we miss him to this day. he was and is the best bass ever lived. ! Metallica forever!
We just designed new merch! Check it out! teespring.com/stores/the-wolf-hunterz-merch

Not even close dawg not even close the king real talk
Cliff Burton is not only talented but is musically trained with classical music background. He understands music on a whole different level. The first three Metallica albums were so varied and so good is partly and hugely because of Cliff.
Steve Harris is a better bassist but all respect to cliff
Lars has also been really good with helping arrange their songs. Look at enter sandman where he said Kirk’s riff in the beginning needs to go here and etc. he knows how to compose and place the riffs idk why people discredit him.
In the 80's Cliff Burton For whom the bell tolls was a beast while playing his bass and that to me Cliff was playing that bass.
Bellz with Cliff = another level
Bellz Seattle = pure aggression
Bellz on S&M = another dimension
Bellz with Kazoo = crazy groove intro

No shit, that would've been cool man.
Very cool...

Much respect Pastor of Muppets
He's the man but so isn't Geddy Lee and Steve Harris all 🐐 s in my opinion.
Cliff is everything in this video. Some of us still miss him every day.
Cliff proved you can be a lead guitarist and play bass in the band.
Find the whole clip where James is saying "if you're here to see spandex, hairspray or makeup, this ain't the fuckin band"
The irony. As they proceed to fling their hair every where.
@@POWER-LINKS they weren't no glam band though
@@POWER-LINKS Glam rock didn’t invent that lmao, they just have long hair and they’re head banging
Cliff was so crazy man that like hes one of very few to make a bass sound like guitar by the way he plays
I love how James flips the person off who tossed a bottle at him and didn't miss a beat!
I was there.
Day on the Green Oakland CA.
August 31 1985
Victory
Metallica
Yngwie Malmsteen
Y&T
Ratt
Scorpions
It was a crazy day. :)
Nice that must have been one hell of a show especially back then if you know what I mean..
Your very lucky what memory

Nothing like the sight of Cliff Burton shredding on his bass and headbanging
And in short ladies and gentlemen is how you play a bass (:. RIP. Thank You CLIFF EM ALL (:.
I met them after a concert by their tour bus in New Jersey ( 1986). Friendly and generous their 🤟🏻with time. I will never forget it.
Cliff was the soul of Metallica when Metallica was great. They were never the same after losing him.
So glad you did this live version showing Cliff. Some have done a later version when the band was older and minus Cliff(Rip)
This song is Cliffs!
1985,these guys hadn't even gotten close to the main stream yet and were still playing to packed area's,and would tour with Ozzy the following year to promote Master Of Puppets.
The man is making thunder in The Heavens these days with that bass.
So raw , love this performance.Cliff was the musician.
okay this commentary is really great you guys killed it!
Always love the Cliff would randomly turn around, face lars, and start headbanging in front of him lol
Yesss... the best decade of Metallica!
My first Metallica concert was monsters of Rock in 1986, back when they were still a supporting act. Van Halen and Scorpions we’re headlining.
That is some epic footage.
So young, yet so amazing!
Best version of this song.
This is the Metallica i like. Old school with Cliff Burton.
If you look closely, someone throws something at James and he flipped them off
I just saw that I just noticed it and it was like really quick that is so cool I never saw that until you mentioned it and I watched this video countless times. Good call

Cliff Em All
Amazing stuff!!!
I know for myself. I understood that Matellica evolved later. What they were with Cliff was their rawest form.

That new track by the Warning is pretty good. Might give that a spin.
