I'm German Austrian and I always do the house decoration the traditional way: On the first of advent, I start with an Advent wreath and just a garland. On the next Advent Sundays, more and more decoration is added, with the 4th, the 6th and the 21st of December being special occasions due to Nikolaus / Odin and the winter solstice. On the 4th of December we gather certain twigs outside and bring them in to set up as "Barbarazweig", to bloom around Christmas. The tree only comes in on Christmas Eve, as a very very special celebration, which is a wonderful reveal to everybody, especially the children. The tree is off course a real tree with bee wax candles and all natural decoration, which is self made mostly and of course repaired multiple times through the years. We light the tree every single evening throughout what we call the Rauhnächte in German, which end on January 6th. The nights are very special in our tradition and Christmas eve is the first of these nights. When it gets dark outside, the whole family comes together and we eat Christmas cookies and sing and talk about our wishes and plans, and sometimes also about our current dreams. Nowadays, with my children grown up and gone, I don't decorate as much anymore, as I travel to my youngest son between winter solstice and Christmas, to stay there until around January 6th to 8th, where all my family gathers for this long.
I absolutely loved reading all this Lisa. It all sounds wonderful. I had to look up the traditions of Barbarazweig and Rauhnachte, neither of which I'd heard of before. I know it's late but I do have a cherry tree so I'll be taking a branch tomorrow and will put it in water to see if it will grow by Christmas 😊
Hi Marion - That looks delicious!!! A tip shared with me many years ago, if you lay a wooden spoon across the top of your pot, it will not boil over. It works! See you tomorrow ❤🎄
Love preserved ginger and the store bought is never that good so yes, I shall watch for nice fresh ginger root and make my own. Thank you for showing this plus all the little pitfalls to watch for. The advent banner is looking so lovely, a few lights and I'd be happily done. Same time tomorrow, for tea!
Hi Marion! You are such a delight. I've been hand-sewing and playing your videos all afternoon on this cool, gray Oklahoma USA day. I enjoy your videos so much!
Marion, you have become a natural videographer. I have learned so much from you and am awed by your talents. Marion’s world is my happy place to visit.
Was finally able to see the whole video. Thank you for the wonderful ideas! I’ll have to try them out and maybe make some ginger beer, too. So good for digestion and yummy! 😋
Marion, perhaps the elves will bring your tree in and decorate it while you are in Paris! And BTW, i love that cardigan that you are wearing. You are so tallented.
So glad you are having good weather, as I wasn't sure if you were getting the bad storms in your area?! The advent diary choices always delight and I can just about smell that delicious ginger you are making. I'm sorry you were having a "Jonah day", and hope things are better tomorrow. You inspired me to go get the ladder from the shed, put up some hooks in the walls at the entry to my living room, and hang some strands for an advent calendar. I didn't have crochets, so I tied up bells instead, that I saved from a wreath of bells I had years ago. It turned out even better than I thought it would. Thank you for all the joy you give, and all of your creative efforts. I do have my tree up, but only put up decor a bit at a time. I like to take my time and savor the moments that way 😊❤
Happy 6th day of Advent! We have ginger in our garden so I'm looking forward to harvesting the ginger and making the preserve. Marion, you are so inspiring. Thank you.🎉
It makes me feel happy seeing you by your mantelpiece each advent morning and then watching what you prepared for us. By coincidence I was making up a “ ginger” gift bag to give to a friend who loves all things ginger . I couldn’t find any preserved stem ginger and had thought to myself, well, it must be possible to make it…..what a coincidence to find you showing us! I will be buying some extra ginger today at the greengrocers 🙂.Thankyou for another lovely advent video x
I have not even got an advent garland out Marion, but will be back to UK for christmas. I did used to keep a real tree in a large pot one I brought with some roots that did not die but eventually it went in up the garden before we moved to Japan but my synthetic one has not arrived back with sea freight due next week.
I've never seen stem ginger made before so thank you for showing me. I made your Christmas cake a couple of weeks ago and I'm really surprised that my husband hasn't devoured the lot yet 😂😂. I look forward to your videos every day ❤xxx
Hi Marion, Thank you for doing the stem ginger. When I have watched The Great British Bake Off in the past, they would always talk about stem ginger. I never knew what it was! Haha, I guess that really shows I'm not from the UK. Now I know and I am definitely going to jar some up. I always learn so much from you and I most definitely love everything you do! Thank you for your effort and all the wonderful projects you share. You are so talented. Thank you again. Best wishes, Suzie
hey Marion! your stem ginger looks delicious and i'm very glad to know how to make it for myself. looking forward to hearing how your 3 ingredient cake turns out. your christmas roses yesterday were so beautifulon your piece. Thanks for sharing this technique. see you tomorrow. linda from california
I am growing ginger for the first time this year, in a pot. I started it from some fresh ginger I bought. The greenery filled in the pot and is now dying back. I hope I get a good harvest. I have grown turmeric before but the harvest was small so I'm hoping for better with this ginger. It got quite a bit of sun on my deck all season. I want to make some fresh chai tea ☕️. I also harvested my first Meyer lemon. 🍋 it was delicious. I saved the zest and planted the seeds and now the little tree is blooming profusely and making my house smell amazing. My internet went out on Thanksgiving and has been really sketchy the past couple of days. We have had weather in the teens and negatives at night. Some strong winds too. I hope I won't miss your wonderful videos. I'll have to do a binge catch up if that happens once it's fixed. ☺️❤️
How wonderful to be growing lemons and ginger! I've grown ginger just in a small pot. I got a lovely plant and hoped I'd get a flower but it ended up dying in the end.
@@marionsworld24 some ginger are supposed to have incredibly beautiful flowers.🌺🌸 mine have not flowered that I noticed either. My aloe bloomed this year it wasn’t the gorgeous orange blooms some do, but the white was pretty too.
@@marionsworld24 was just reading up on my ginger info in order to harvest and found out it can take 3 years for one rhizome to mature enough to produce the beautiful flowers so if harvesting yearly for the rhizomes to consume that is why they don’t flower. Sort of like fruit trees take several seasons to make fruit.
I’m with you about putting up your decorations I always put mine up on 15th my youngest birthday even though he isn’t home anymore. I love stem ginger and I didn’t know you could grate it straight from the deep freeze ❤
I have never had preserved ginger. Is this very popular in England? I ❤ your Advent Diary! I would bring the tree in the house after you come back from your trip. Then it is still in good shape. Just my opinion. Don't get stressed over decorating. What gets done, gets done. When we were children Mam would put the tree up on Christmas Eve after we'd all gone to bed... That's probably why I wait so long to put mine up. And everything is always down by 12th night..
Love the dove! oh, i never thought to just toss my ginger in the freezer and use it from there. although i do like to just use it for ginger tea a lot. i do have a cake recipe i want to remake that had stem ginger in it, so this is a good excuse not to throw the 2 boxes of saved jars i have gathering dust in the recycling... thanks again Marion
I haven't put up any decorations yet, not even a wreath on the door! Live wreaths are lovely but so expensive here costing $30-$40. Does anyone else want to go live with Marion or at least in her neighborhood? I agree. watching you makes me happy.
This is great Marion, I have been a pickler & preserver for about 40 years but have never tried this, so guess what I'm going to be doing. Really looking forward to trying it. thank you xx
Thank you Marion for your video. I use ginger all the time grab it while you can ,there is a bit of a shortage of it due to poor weather. Some shops are limiting it to 100 gm a customer. I have a lot in the freezer and my ginger in syrup is happily done. As a diabetic I use stevia and it works brilliantly. I eat it daily in Greek yogurt ,just in case anyone out there wants an alternative to sugar. As for the tree, I think you will know what you have left to do after your trip so is there time? Would it be stressful? You want to enjoy your trip and not worry about what you need to do on returning home.
Thank you so much for the preserved ginger recipe. I shall definitely try yours. I have made some before but I don't think I had the right recipe and the ginger remained rather tough, although it did soften eventually.Yours sounds so much better!! Marion...I will be using your recipe and making this tomorrow. Smashing, thank you.
Wow! Thanks for the frozen ginger tip!
Wow, I love this. Never knew that you could freeze ginger……I’ve just put two large roots into my freezer before they shrivel up.
Lovely diary entry, Marion. Another Kitchen marvel that I will try. 😊

Love ginger, I can follow your detailed instructions, thanks very much!
I love the flavor of ginger. Thank you for this information.

Hello Marion, another 🎉wonderful utube. Thank you , you are a lovely lady ❤xx
I love that dove bird thingy
🐦
I’m with you about putting up your decorations I always put mine up on 15th my youngest birthday even though he isn’t home anymore. I love stem ginger and I didn’t know you could grate it straight from the deep freeze ❤

Merci Marion 🥰
I am really enjoying seeing your advent garland each day and wondering what you will hang up. Such a great idea. xx
I'm in love with your tea cup.
Me, too.😊☕
☺️ I bought it because it has bluetits on it and they were Michael's favourite little bird..🐦
Love “Marion’s Mantel Talks” (MMT) ❤❤❤❤

I’ll probably never do this but very interesting 😊
Mmm,yum. With vanilla icecream🥳
Oh yes!
Thank you so much. I am going to make that
Estupenda receta!!, besicos
I’m going to give this a go 😊
Ta for the hints, Marion. Looks delicious. Does it have to live in the fridge after it's opened?
❤ TFS
Looks yummy❤️🇨🇦
Thank you Marion for your video. I use ginger all the time grab it while you can ,there is a bit of a shortage of it due to poor weather. Some shops are limiting it to 100 gm a customer. Oh I didn't realise there's been a shortage.. I'll make sure I get some in my freezer 😊
I would just in case it gets worse.
That looks easy. Going to try it, thanks.
Really love your cardigan. Is it your own pattern?
I find your vlogs really inspiring , it's lovely to have a mixture of skills and ideas. Thank you.
It's this pattern by Kate Davies ☺️ pin.it/2gRBTG0KE
I've never tried that recipe, but I think I will soon. 😋
Thank you so much for the preserved ginger recipe. I shall definitely try yours. I have made some before but I don't think I had the right recipe and the ginger remained rather tough, although it did soften eventually.Yours sounds so much better!!
Incidentally the syrup is nice on yogurt or even pancakes but best of all it makes a warning drink with lemon and boiling water.
🤞

It's so easy to use from the freezer too..
My house doesn't get decorated for Christmas until December 15th. Then I take it all down on epiphany, so we're decorated about 3 weeks total. I'm excited to hear about next year's plans!
Thank you Marion!
Thank you-I had heard of preserved ginger and stem ginger, but didn’t know what they were or how to use it.
Great chopped up in cakes or chutneys. Also to give heat to a curry. And just to eat as a dessert in meringue nests or something like that.
Thanks for the lesson, Marion! I really want to be you when I grow up 😂. Well, I guess at 74, I’m supposed to be grown up already. But where’s the fun in that? Lol
😅
Recipe duly noted....ginger on the shopping list!
🎉🎉 love ginger thankyou
My tree is same as yours - waiting outside until we're closer to Christmas, and returned from travels.I decorate it in one😅evening, so it’s not too stressful. Who knows, maybe you’ll find some new ornaments in Paris!
That would be lovely..🤞
If you have some ginger syrup left you can also add it to your tea. Yummy!
👍
Yummy 😋
My mother always put the tree outside in a bucket of water. It would go up a week before Christmas and come down on New Year’s. The needles never dried out, so no concerns about a Christmas tree fire.
I do exactly the same.. I keep it in the bucket of water when it comes in the house too. And just drape fabric around the bucket so it looks pretty ☺️🎄
Marion can you repeat how much sugar you used as I think you said ml? What is that in grams or oz please? Great idea for gifts so thank you 🙏
It depends on how much weight of ginger you start with.
So if you start with 8oz of ginger you'll need around 8oz of sugar. It works whether you use ounces or grams..
So 400g ginger= 400g sugar etc
Then the ginger water can be just a bit under that.
So 8oz of ginger, 8oz sugar will need 8 floz of ginger water
Hope that helps 🤞
I love ginger syrup over good vanilla ice cream.
Scrumptious!
Marion, I love your mug. Where can. I get one. Thank you. Dolores Brogdon.
It's called Secret Wood Bluetit by a company called Dunoon. It was a present to myself when I was feeling low last year...
@marionsworld24
Thank you so much Marion. Your words mean so much to many of us. We do feel your loss. I am blessed to still have my spouse. But I have lost my mother and mother in 5 days apart. It was tragic to the both of us . I feel your loss. Prayers and again thank for the info on the cup it is beautiful.
Thank you! Where I live in Costa Rica ginger grows very well! What do you do with the pickled Ginger. The sugar level is bad because I am diabetic!
Oh you probably shouldn't be making this then... Too much sugar!
Preserved ginger can be used in all sorts of things, from savoury to sweet.
I never made ginger like this. Orange peels and other fruit, I did made with syrup. I always put the hot jars upside down while cooling. i read somewhere that the air is going away. No idea if it is true, but I do it always.
Yes I've done that before as well. It's supposed to make the seal more secure.
What did you mean about processing the jars after filling?
I usually let the hot jars and the hot jam or curd cool down to make a vacuum and then they can be stored.
But some people like to process the jars back in simmering water for a time first. In the US that is the recommended way...
@marionsworld24 thanks Marion ❤️
After the jar is opened for use, do you keep it in the refrigerator?
Yes I do.
