people weren't as scared of everything back when kids played outside more. a raggedy old white lady offered me a ride home when i was like 9. i took it cuz my lazy ass couldnt be bothered to walk 3 blocks. in hindsight, i was almost sold into slavery.
I heard of this, in a different version. A Vietnamese version. It's on a dark night or rainy night. This guy saw a girl and he offered her a ride. She accepted and he later gave her his jacket. He said he'll get it the next day. The next day he came there, her parent opened the door. He asked about that girl but instead heard that she's dead for a few months. He went to the cemetery and saw the jacket on the gravestone. So he hurriedly ran off.
X It's classic horror story pattern; someone gives someone else a ride, then later find out they're what's called a "Hitchhiking Ghost". The ghost is often revealed to have died in a violent car accident, and are now cursed to forever thumb rides from strangers, disappearing after they get dropped off.
My favorite thing about this story and how the music and vibe of it all backs it up isnt all up in your face when the twist comes. There isnt a shocking bang of the piano or anything. Its more in like a, "well, that happened. Huh." Type of way. This is very heartwarming to me, also very sad.
And that sweater would have stayed right there 😬 Actually this is similar to an old urban legend. I saw on a show it was a female hitchhiker and a man drop her off at home. She left her scarf in his car so he went to the door to return it and her mother said her daughter had died some time ago.
I've heard many different creepy stories like this, but this is probably my favorite. It's both eerie, but wholesome in some form. Idk how to describe it, but the feeling is nice 🙂
I like this story. No serial killer, big green eyed monsters or malevolent spirits...just a kid who wanted to go home and a stranger kind enough to give him a ride.
This story is clearly based off an urban legend that, according to what I have read, is actually true. There's no proof that ghosts were involved, but a kind man did end up giving a ride to a girl who seemed to be dead according to her family.
I heard a sort of similar story where instead of lending a sweater to a dead person, a couple goes and stays at an old couple’s house as it was raining and they needed a place to spend the night, and then, the next morning, they payed for their services and the couple drove away. When they got to town, everyone said that house had been burnt down years ago. The couple drives back to the house where the old couple lived and they find burnt ruins, but on a barely intact table, they found the money they had given to the old couple and a not that said “thank you, we missed having company.” I think that the moral of both stories is that generosity can mean a lot to someone, even if it’s something small, and the gratitude lives on. :)
There is a reference to this, the hook, and the babysitter in family guy, peter's got woods when he says "AND THE SWEATER WAS NEATLY FOLDED ON THE GRAVE AND HE RETURNED TO THE CAR TO FIND THE SEVERED HOOK ON THE DOOR HANDEL BECAUSE THE CALLS WERE COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!"
This story was probably lifted from the song "Laurie (Strange Things Happen in This World)"; it was just changed so that it would be more relatable to a child.
Reading this when I was a kid: “OMG this is sooooooo creepy.” Reading this as an adult: “The kid didn’t want the man to know his name or where he really lived. So he used the name and address of a local kid who died. Then, to screw with the man, he left the sweater at the kid’s grave. Also, who info dumps the exact location of their recently dead kid’s grave to a total stranger? More likely, mom would have begun sobbing and cursed the man out for such a cruel prank.
The story about somebody picking up a hitchhiker, only for the hitchhiker to turn out to have been a ghost, is one of the most oft-repeated urban legends around.
I remember reading this in 3rd grade Mrs.Loyd was my librarian I loved the horrific illistrations everyone was scared of the book. I remember this story specifically also the guy with tbe ugly teeth
I remember when that 70s show did a Halloween episode after Eric told the story and started telling about sleepy hollow Fez turns to him an says what happened did he leave his sweater somewhere?😂
omg I just made the conclusion, what if the guy who give Jim the sweater was the one who k1lled him, he maybe accidentally drove him over the car and Jim was looking for a justice that's why Jim was only showing up when he's driving past on the cemetery and sweater was supposed to be an evidence.
If i see a kid alone at night in the rain, then im just gonna keep driving. 1. You avoid getting the cops called on you if you offer a ride 2. You avoid spooky ass shit
Hey I want you to know I've not been able to recall the title of this book that had all these stories in them for at least a decade. From the bottom of my heart thank you
its scary but sad because the little boy died and the man gave him the sweater but when man went to the boys house but he was dead but he met the boy in the grave so sad..

He died from getting in a pedophile’s car and getting murdered....Jim wasn’t very bright...

I love these stories, they are super well told, I don't know if this happens to other people, but her voice relaxes me
I wonder if it implied he died from the cold.

Or Resurrection Mary,
What if there was a Japanese version?
That damn cat
That cat is all the stories in this book!
Reading these stories as a kid was the best part of my childhood.
I think this is actually a rather sweet and touching story. The man was kind even though he barely knew the child.

That version is called Last Kiss.
beanandpopcorn This is actually a pretty old story. It's been around for hundreds of years.
It's also called "Lavender" because she's usually said to be wearing a lavender prom dress when the guy picks her up.
This and The Green Ribbon were my absolute favourites back in 2nd/3rd grade!!
The cat at the end just chillin looking at him
What kind of child would wanna go into a stranger's van?
i mean he *is* a ghost
It's a retelling of the haunted hitchhiker/"Lavender"
Basically 1930-70
PinkyTheKitty one with free candy in it
well this is how he must of died a year ago, going into vans like this.

I can’t remember if it was 1st or 2nd grade. But my old grade school teachers used to read us this story!
I like to learn this tone so nice and calm
The music brought back some old resident evil memories
This story made me feel sad when I first read it
I love how these stories are told
These give me flashbacks to when I was little reading stories like this
Something about this oddly comforting...
I like this story. No serial killer, big green eyed monsters or malevolent spirits...just a kid who wanted to go home and a stranger kind enough to give him a ride.
I finally found it. I've been looking for this story for years
Well, this was certainly a GRAVE tale.

Why hasn’t he been posting

Did he put his sweater on?
Not scary, but Bittersweet
its scary but sad because the little boy died and the man gave him the sweater but when man went to the boys house but he was dead but he met the boy in the grave so sad..
I remember this story only that it wasn't a kid who died, it was a prom girl.
Did anyone else come from Danny Gonzales?
The message of the story is "Don't help people near the cemetery at night".
This is more sad than scary
my fave scary story was the green ribbon
