The chorus in this amp is stereo: speaker A outputs the dry signal and speaker B the effect. If you do one without the other, it sounds shit. Absolutely staggering amp, gotta get one some of these days.
im just glad to finally hear darker tones outta this amp. so many other vids on YT either have the tone dialed in way too bright and harsh/shrill or they're recording from their f'n iphone which certainly doesn't help for capturing low end.
@@dreamcity7514 some would say the JC's cleans are sterile as if it's some unchangeable characteristic of the amp. I disagree. Can it be warm and vintage to the extent of something like a fender twin or deluxe reverb? Maybe not. But proper EQ and playing style make all the difference. personally, I have the tone knob on my guitar turned down a bit and the treble on the amp kept very low. With my p90 neck pickup, playing fingerstyle with a fairly light touch, and my preference of picking near the base of the fretboard rather than close to the bridge (makes a big difference), i can get warm, sweet tones. I think ppl who claim it's sterile are so used hearing JC's used in crystal clear, trebled out and compressed 80s production styles that it's all they go off of. That, or watching demo after demo on YT featuring the same shrill tone i mentioned in my OP. Ultimately, it's best if u can go and spend some quality time experimenting the amps for a good while at a guitar shop if u have that luxury.
I've been blown away by how good this amp truly is! It may not have the deeper tone of the JC120 because of the size but with the improved distortion AND reverb it is nothing short of magical. One thing similar to the JC120 though is for it's size it IS LOUD! My other amps in my apartment I can go to 1.5 - 2 on the volume. On the JC 40 I don't dare go past 1. And also like the JC120 it pairs with pedals amazingly good. And at just under 35 pounds I won't be crippled in 20 years either.
I dig this 40 over the Katana Artist. Everything about JC-40 is sophisticated, it's got that Robert Ward/Your Love Is Amazing thing. The Katana even with great players demoing it sounds like GC on a weekend. The Katana is Aspen, The JC is Everest.
this is a stereo amp. you only recorded the wet side of stereo chorus/vib. the chorus sounds nothing like this when combined with the other dry side. bad demo.
I have only recently started watching this channel but this is the third amp demo I saw and it is weird: Why when doing a Demo of an Amp, are they only showing guitar like this was some guitar playing tutorial? I get it - there is more motion in a shot of the guitar than the amp only ... but the least I would expect is to see which settings are changed to get the different sounds to get some idea of what the amp could do and whether it is worth checking out ...
This guy looks like he was pulled from New York City alley after doing a bunch of heroine, then forced to do a demo of this amp.... by the way, this amp is sweet; I purchased it 2 months ago and it's incredible for cleans.
Hey, I have an idea; how about tuning your guitar BEFORE attempting an online demo? Old school i know but seems to work for millions of others - give it a go.
The Roland Jazz Chorus is literally the exact amp Metallica used on all their clean tones. Nothing Else Matters, One, Sanitarium, Interlude to Master of Puppets, etc. Rush and The Police used it too. So in a word, "yes".
Why is he demoing the chorus to such extreme settings half of the demo, resulting a permanent seasick effect. It's just not listenable It gets better toward the end..
Are you using a 2000 dollar guitar? I mean shit dude, lets play it on something people can afford! I played this at House of Guitars in Rochester NY, with the cheapest stat I could find, yes I got a squire, these do sound good, but fuck this expensive things, I can take one look at your guitar, and see it isn't cheap!
LOL. Demo'ing a JC with only one mic..... All you get in the audio is the vibrato signal not the dry for the actual Chorus. Sorry guys, worst demo you've ever done.
Hey yall don't make fun of this poor soul..... homeless folks need work too, you know. But seriously, this video is a waste of time. It supposedly is a review of a "jazz" amp. He demonstrates only the twangy, distorted features of the amp and ingores any clean sounds the amp might make. He never even uses the neck pickup! Note to the Roland company.... you can do so much better than him!
I don’t know if the intention of this video was to make sure nobody buys this by playing the most jangly trebly horrible thing imaginable to where you want to grab your ears and scream. Sounds like a bad acid trip you can’t escape from.
This guy hasn't a clue how to use this amp that is a terrible demonstration what this amp can do He then goes onto says you can get any sound pity he couldn't
I used to own a JC120. I can't believe how much better the distortion is on the JC40
You need to record in stereo (dedicated microphone for each speaker) to get the chorus effect. this video was all vibrato....

is this amp good for a warm and vintage vibe over something like say a fender amp? I am trying to make some pretty lofi sounding stuff

Come on, I don't agree at all. Why are you dumping on Boss's best selling amp?
No need for it.
I do agree the distortion is much better than the JC120 and JC77.
These amps are more like your local sledding hill than Aspen or Everest.
I've been seeing Paul on these videos for the past seven years. And he gets weirder looking every time I see him.
this is a stereo amp. you only recorded the wet side of stereo chorus/vib. the chorus sounds nothing like this when combined with the other dry side. bad demo.
Good point, I just thought it was the absolute shambles guitar playing
wow- The amp sounds great...... looks like Paul was jammin on it for a few days and nights !!!

How bad is this back ground hiss that been mentioned?
there aren't any alleys in new york city
Duh... I'm so ugly I don't even have a picture of myself. Shut up melon-head.
This was rather enjoyable. Good job!
Paul, did they drag you through a bush before you filmed this?
Lol man I don't think this guy reads the comments! Ha
+emilio olivas
I don't think these guys ever read the comments below any of these vids.
Pulled out of the bush, I think he was screaming "Wilson!!!!!!" when they pulled him out lol
No, just his red Strat! That thing looks beat!
You've only got one speaker mic'd up, the wet side. You're only giving us 50% of the sound, so its just a detuned mush.
sounds so good...thanks Paul
at 4:45 when you hit the Bridge pick up then it sounded pretty kool!
Do they make that guitar in a Relic version?
Do you think it's loud enough for big club gigs? Looks like my dream amp has come true!! :)
so, did u like it?
Don't know how big you're talking but this 40 watt is super loud in a good way. Ask my neighbors 😅.
I basicly customized my jc 120 to play it with a kitty hawk junior and it sounds great
LUCY IN THE SKYY OF DIAMONDS!!!
Nice amp. Nice playing.
You guys crack me up. Half of you want to buy new guitars that look all beat up, but when a presenter looks that way, you get all bent out of shape.
🤣😂🤣
Great video! You made me , "a believer"! , thanks!
you get a better sound if you mic both speakers. just sayin' as far as the chorus goes
i like the tone around 4:35 to 5:25 what has changed? Distortion built in? and or something else,??
Hi. I want to do some recordings with the jazz chorus sound. Would the 40 sound just as good as the 120 for recording?
Hey, I have an idea; how about tuning your guitar BEFORE attempting an online demo? Old school i know but seems to work for millions of others - give it a go.
Is this loud and bassy enough for a rehearsal room, 3 piece band, semi-loud rock n roll?
Morten O.T. Yes it is. I play in a four piece band with synths, drum machines and drums and never even got its volume knob more than 4. Seriously.
Cool, thanks
At 3 on the volume 98 dB was extremely loud with great bottom end
Steve Zahn/Michael J Fox lovechild?
Paul looks so burnt out. Surprised guitar world is still a thing
That's a really cool strat..
you review the amp or your guitar playing??
+eros agono The Amp.
Is it a good amp for acoustic guitars (for example Ovation)?
2:08 and 3:18 the amp sounds like he looks
Gorgeous guitar
Is this loud enough for gigs? id rather not haul around the jc120 lol
yes it is!
That distortion is a Boss circuit?
can this amp handle pedal effects? like a mean noisy fuzz pedal for instance
Imo no SS amp is going to sound good with fuzz
Nick Reinhardt Uses it, iirc. So it should.
Nauj Zemog
Who the f is Nick R?
Tera Melos's lead guitarist/singer
Oh yeah that guy, lol
How'd you get rid of the hiss while recording?
I didn't know there were so many fashion police on TH-cam btw who wore it better? lmao...
It's an interesting demo. How about actually playing some jazz through an amp called a Jazz Chorus amp?
Dried your hair on the carpet again, huh?
Are those Joe Bardens in that strat?
why no 'manual' chorus mode demo?
guitar?
What kind of pickups in that strat?
I understand Roland put in a fixed mode for chorus. Use it.
Joseph Stalin would have gouged the eyes out of the barber that did Paul’s hair so he could never again cut hair so beautifully .
Ese ampli suena espetacular! .
Can this amp be used for metal or hard rock??
yes i think
Well Billy Duffy, The Cure and many others proved the 120 did it and the 40 is smaller but also improved 😊.
The Roland Jazz Chorus is literally the exact amp Metallica used on all their clean tones. Nothing Else Matters, One, Sanitarium, Interlude to Master of Puppets, etc. Rush and The Police used it too. So in a word, "yes".
@@NytronX I believe i see them behind Wes Borland / Limp Bizkit too...pretty cool
Sounds very nice, but I don't agree it sounds better than the Katana.
Come on..way better..you should try It in person..this Is the excellence of solid state amp..
I think they forgot that the amp is stereo and recorded just the wet speaker
this guy could make a '58 burst sound like a fucking egg slicer.....!
0:38 jackass theme
Who else owns the Jc 120
what's the guitar he's using ?
Sender Fratocaster. If you wear sandpaper sleeves your guitar will alo look like that
Why is it called a "jazz" chorus? Jazz music doesn't have chorus in it
No but sometimes i wish they did!
Amplifier by Roland
Hair by Crazy Meg of Bedlam
Spacey, but cool
No Chorus in Jazz Chorus demo . . .
I just picked up a JC50 in a trade.
Good amp and a good player. But tune up that fokin guitar man!
+PAK Music I thought it was just me. Even with the chorus on and the shifting pitch shitstorm, you can notice it lol
Why is he demoing the chorus to such extreme settings half of the demo, resulting a permanent seasick effect. It's just not listenable
It gets better toward the end..
hi everyone!
+Pascan .Andre Hi I'm Billy!
Is anyone else really bothered he isn't playing jazz?
criticman123 No
Yes, I too am bothered by a guy demonstrating an amp called a Jazz Chorus, and playing no jazz.
Nope
Yousician is the best way to learn guitar.
Are you using a 2000 dollar guitar? I mean shit dude, lets play it on something people can afford! STFU.
Don't get all the hate, Paul is great. The amp in the other hand is awful, never been a fan of the jazz amp
Riiiiggghhhhtttt.....
That beard tho
Is this what happens when you roll out of bed, come straight to work, and make videos for TH-cam? Damn bro. Hairbrush.
tune your guitar...
Sounds like smegma
Is it me or he looks like angry birds 🐦
Either that guitar is shit or he doesn't tune it
its cause he was only recording the wet speaker.
The guitar itself sounds so bright and twangy. Don't even think it is amp.
The effects help a bit, but the brightness is still there. Sound hideous.
+Son of a Zombie Yeah, not the best guitar choice for this demo indeed!
+Son of a Zombie This is how a JC style amp sounds clean. It's an acquired taste.
Terrible!
Sorry..not the best demo of one of the best amp ever !
Dood. You mic'd only on speaker. Sounds terrible
Surprised here, he was able to make an amazing amp sound like shit.He usually does better
Hopefully he's shaved his head by now
Way too much bullshit
Please turn whatever makes it sound so damn awful OFF.
he only recorded one of the speakers. he recorded the wet one so it sounds really out of tune all the time.
Hey yall don't make fun of this poor soul..... homeless folks need work too, you know.

please tune that guitar
it's the chorus affects that mate it some like it is out of tune. but it actually is tuned.
Wrong its the vibrato effect
haha. chorus is a combination of vibrato and normal.
Desire Awperator
Sounds like you have no idea what chorus is
listen to a demo where they record each speaker individually on this amp. that is exactly how the chorus on this amp works.
😂🤣🤣Guitar Hopelessly out of Tune. WHY is he using such a Shitty l👀king old wreck anyhow???.
Lousy demo of a great amp
Always liked what Andy Summers did with the JC.
Isolated guitar track

I dont think it says much for your or your company when one of your reps looks so... disheveled
