I took an entire college class on hay& pasture analysis from a very dedicated professor, you’d be surprised at the number of people who can talk about hay for hours and hours 😂
Definitely check your local farmers for hay! Your supporting a local business, it's better for the environment, and the hay is usually much higher quality than Oxbow and Kaytee. Some will even deliver to your door or sell chew sticks (mine sells apple and birch!)
I don't know if you knew this - but the reason clovers are grown in hay fields is because their roots keep the ground healthier and therefore makes the hay higher quality and higher yielding :)
My bunny loves his hay! I recently started buying a variety of the small bags that Oxbow sells including: timothy, meadow, oat, and orchard. My rabbit, Louie, seems to greatly enjoy the additional flavors & scents of hay. Not only that, but I’ve found that he prefers one brand’s timothy hay to another. I didn’t really think about different fields having different flavors, but it totally makes sense.

Having a handful of tasty herbs at home is superuseful. My bun is a heavy hay eater and has perfect teeth, but we noticed his teeth were sightly uneven some weeks ago. He was feeling unwell due to E. Cuniculi (no organ nor neurological damage, we found it pretty soon) and was munching less hay than he uses to, so we mixed herbs with the hay and he starting munching as usual. Now teeth are normal again and has returned to normal hay eating (no herbs needed), this way we prevented a stressful dental exploration while recovering from E. Cuniculi.
All mine eat a mix of Timothy/alfalfa/oat hay that has some molasses. Its actually marketed for horses but they do well with it . I'll still drop a small Timothy/ alfalfa cube in the cage a couple times a week. They get a variety of greens 2× a day and 1 tbsp of pellets as a treat at evening.. they are all around 4 months old.
