First of all, stand further back and let the lens do the closeup perspective. Secondly, use a tripod!!! Lastly, try a slow pan as the train rolls past. If it's stopping, position yourself at a location where the doors open. Follow the people into the coach with the you and the camera still outside. Then begin a slow pan as the train departs.
1. Further back would be in the very centre of the platform and having the poles block the shot (except for the GO train which I was actually boarding) 2. This station doesn't like people using Tripods, I would've had security approach me, I had it with me but again security + people telling me how this station is. That's why you've never seen me railfan here. 3. I don't necessarily follow peoples suggestions if they don't fit me (This suggestion does not work as I was boarding the train to go home). 4. My lens is a 18-55 mm, it doesn't zoom in that far.
Really Cool! If you don't like the blur effect on the trains, you can change the shutter speed on the camera
