Man I love this final boss fight, it easily makes up for all the cheap attacks many bosses do throughout Oath. It was cool to hear more dialogue here! I played the PC version which added in voice acting later, and unfortunately some lines were completely absent in this part of the game, like Chester’s reveal as he shows up, or Galbalan’s dialogue before the fight. Even his maniacal taunt if he grabs you in phase 3 is completely missing from the PC version. Still an absolutely incredible game; awesome video!
Galbalan is voiced by Jamieson Price (Super Street Fighter IV announcer, Lu Bu, Mayor Edgar in this game), while Garland is voiced by Chris Sabat (Vegeta/Piccolo, Kuwabara, Zoro). They're pretty close, but Price's deep voice is fairly distinct while Sabat usually gets the rougher roles, Garland being an exception.
I just beat this game on Steam this morning (on Normal however). I didn't realize it had such kickass English voiceovers. If I can find a way to patch them into my Steam version, I may end up playing this again. Maybe I'll tackle Hard mode this time.
There's no slowdown on the PSP version either, it's just that remotejoy itself lags when recording intensive things like this fight. And that's most likely a problem with my computer specs...
God, i loved this game so much. I beat it on every difficulty. I started on hard mode then moved on to nightmare then sped through normal and easy. Good lord after playing on the harder difficulties the easier ones felt like such a different game. Haha, the end where you kept missing the last volley reminded me of a few Game Overs I got because Galbalan decided to be difficult and kept hitting me making me miss like you did. Fun times. I haven't played this game since 2012. What a walk through memory lane.
OH wowwwww, the first Garland I thought of was Garland from FFI as he was voiced in Dissidia Final Fantasy. Sheesh I'm dense, yes that sounds like this game's Garland.
Yeah I typically do better at that phase (never getting caught by his grab more than once), but the game lagged a lot when recording this fight among other things. I also have to rush or split videos this length or else the video file invalidates itself, but this turned out ok given the circumstances, imo.
Am I the only one who thinks the battle is more epic in the Wanderers versions? I really miss those rising rocks with the shaking floor. The room here is just static, could perfectly be a non final boss room. And Galbalan's more Alien desgin doesn't feel as powerful to me as his more demonic desgin in Wanderers. The theme is another story though, I prefer this more tense approach rather than the PCE's awesomeness. And that's saying something cuz PCE's The Strongest Enemy is already a great banger. Edit: Nevermind, both have Aweasomeness, just that tOiF starts tense before getting intense... which makes the Intensity even more intense once it reaches it!
I was meaning the claw that grabbed you in the third phase is Garland. At least im pretty damn sure seeing as Garland had it in his fight when he sucked you in to do his ultimate attack.
During the second part I like how you use the earth bracelet to guard against the ice blast he does. I always hovered above it with a fully charged wind bracelet and then got 7 hits in -- you managed 13 with your method.
Its hard to know which version of Oath I considered the definitive as the PC version has such better graphics and effects but the PSP has infinity more features to the point it makes the PC version look barin.
David Folsom Yeah except you're wrong. I mean for psp it looks good. The only real issue is the difference in resolution. Also the psp version does have much features. New game play plus, voice acting and more content.
Time to lay the smack down. Anyone who has played the two will outright tell you the psp version is easier and actually is difficult to die in later on because of the super easy overdrive buff in the psp version. The fact overdrive fills over time when lower on health means you get regen of your hp handed to you if you ever screw up. Lets move on, the psp version lacks pretty much every feature from the pc version such as any ongoing functionality like leaderboards. Of coures it's also missing every graphical feature of the pc but that's because the psp is a very slow piece of hardware technically speaking. Lets move onto the script. The psp version ported by xseed uses a literal fan translation that was extremely poor. At least they voice acted it? The bullshit they tacked on at the beginning and extra story added make no sense though. It makes you feel like they didn't quite understand what the project was when they picked it up(possible). I could keep going, but really you pretty much only proved you had never played both versions or knew anything about them and I'll be ignoring your replies from here on out.
Roman Dass Yep, the PSP does have way more features, but about the voice acting, you can actually use it in the steam version if you download it, japanese or english. You probably know about it, just saying because someone might be interested.
He still will do that sometimes. If you jump off the platform towards him and shoot the fireball mid-jump, sometimes you can open him up without getting hit by an energy ball. Still, be ready to dodge as soon as you jump off in case you miss.

They should have lowered the pitch/add processing of Galaban's voice like they did the Ys Book I & II Turbo CD villain voices. It sounds weird with that big thing having a normal human voice.

What is the reasoning behind using the charged wind attack rather than the regular attacks on the hands? It seems like you could be doing two or three times damage on those sections just doing regular attacks,
I wouldn't say it's horrible from a quality standpoint, it's very well done. But I can see what you mean about how it doesn't really fit Galbalan. I would expect something closer to Darm's voice from the older versions of Ys II, but instead Galbalan sounds young, alive, and very typical.
I agree with you, those voices just do not match to me. Especially Chester's voice! He's so handsome yet his voice isn't xD The Japanese dub is alright. I don't think it's amazing or anything but I think the voices fit the characters better. I found a way to insert the voices into the PC version, which is why I'm doing a second playthrough. :) I'm enjoying it so far, but I think I like no voices the best.
If you havent played this version yet, it actually somehow managed to perfectly translate most of the snes environments into 3D. But yeah things like bosses and areas outside of dungeons are quite a bit different.

I'll be honest with you all, because I've started playing Ys games in order just recently, and I stopped playing this final boss just so I would write this comment, so nostalgia factor is nonexistent here. So far, this is my least favorite Ys game, and I played most versions of Ys I and II, played Mask of the Sun, Dawn of Ys, Memories of Celceta and Wanderers from Ys (Genesis and PC engine) before this. This is the game which frustrated me the most, as it has the most amount of cheap enemies and bosses. Not only that, but the game in its very final boss fight commits the cardinal sin of gaming: lying to the player. You are told right before the start of the fight to use the sword to defeat the final boss. Meanwhile, for the first phase, you can't touch it with the sword, at all. Not only that, but it pulls the Ys II, where you actually have to rely on magic to do anything, instead of magic just being an aid in the battle. I disliked Ys II for it, and the same feeling translates here. Especially if you are playing this on PC, because you don't have full control of where you are shooting the fireball. And if you are using the mouse, you are gimping yourself because it's the clunkiest way of controlling a character I've seen yet. This game has the most amount of cheap bosses (bosses with cheap attacks, as in attacks which have basically no windup and are pretty much unavoidable), which offers an unfair amount of challenge which just translates into frustration. Imagine that, because the boss RIGHT BEFORE this final boss is well paced boss which requires patience, timing, spacing and reflexes that don't require for the player to slow down time 100x. And I'm not going back to grind for more levels, especially if max tempered raval armor, shield and brave sword aren't enough. I really feel like I will drop this game, because an epic final boss in terms of scale and flashiness is ultimately a bad final boss if it's unfair to fight against it. People seem to adore this game in particular, but this is the only Ys game I will actually grow to hate.
Considering it being a game that is over a decade old, it's not unusual to have cheap bosses and enemies from the 90s. In fact that's the whole point of strategy guides and stuff being prepared ahead of time and such, the game requires players to do their research, rather than to be taught ingame like in modern times.
His voice lines are such fuckin cringe, I had to reload and sit thru the intro sequence again just to turn that shit off. At least in the scene on pc he doesnt talk beforehand, it's just ominous rumblings that actually fit the mood and then he comes in with that jokey dialogue during the fight and I busted out laughing.
Agreed, The voice acting is horrible. And I dislike Galbalan's speech in this version - it's much more sparse in the PC version, as befitting a "demon" just awakening from centuries of induced slumber. It also hits you over the head with the Ys VI connections, which are much more cryptic in the PC version.
Damn, when he catches Adol, I don't think I have ever heard Jamieson Price laugh like that. Never knew he could do that kind of mad cackles.
Galbalan: I am the Alpha, and the Omega! Humans are such fragile creatures. You shall know my power well!
Adol: Hold my Brocia Serum.
Everytime I feel down I simply watch each Ys boss battle I've gone through lol

Galbalan's VA does an amazing job here. Gotta have that passion. And that death scream -- that's how a villain death should sound right there.
