I have to say- and maybe this is in part a happy accident- but I am learning a lot from your videos. I’m not a heavy metal geriatric or anything, but I am copping a lot from you right had techniques and it is really helping my pinch harmonics and my bass run rhythm lines. Really helping. It is easy to overlook one of the best parts of a ‘Les Paul’ which is the lower three strings, bottom four frets. So thanks for that. More stories about buying guitars with your dad, please- thems were great!
Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't do anything music-related 9-5, mostly pushing papers. Great question on the solos. I don't know if I could narrow it down to just three, but off the top of my head I'd take Ed's solo on Ice Cream Man, Page on Stairway, and Rhoads on Mr. Crowley, simply because they're all mini-songs in a way. They're so lyrical, it's very much a second little story being told with a beginning, middle and end.
Not a true Budokan guitar. The only pickup that Ace used was the bridge. The others were for looks and not wired into the circuit. So the pickup selector switch only worked as a kill switch or effect switch when he flipped it on and off in a fast manner.
Have you played a Les Paul? All you have to do to get that signal chop is cut the volume of every pickup other than the one you're using and flip the switch rapidly.
Played quite a few of them . But Ace in a interview said straight out the actually Budokan guitar he played only had the bridge pickup wired in and the other otherv2 were unwired. He just likjed the look of a 3 pickup guitar even though he only used the bridge pup. And to truly get Aces tone you have to have the other two pickups disconnected along with the rythym volume & tone pots. If you don' t it creates loading and changes the complete sound of what he gets. More isn' t nessasarily better. Intact the less pickup and controls the better a guitar sounds.😂
+Timothy Cote This is a reproduction of the guitar that Ace played at the Budokan concert Kiss did in the 70's so it won't have Ace's Spaceman face on the head stock, just the standard 70's Les Paul Head stock. That's a totally different Les Paul that came out in the 90's.
Thanks! Yeah, that control pedal makes it so that you don't need a special audio card. The pedal has an audio box in it that will work with your computer. If you're using a Mac, just make sure you meet the system requirements. It needs Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 (with latest update), an Intel Core Duo or newer, and 2 GB RAM.
I've heard the Richlite lasts a very long time. It's been around for years, mainly as a synthetic counter top material (like Corian). It's commonly used on items that get a lot of use, like bar tops, restaurant tables, etc. It's designed for long wear. I like it. I thought it wasn't nearly as bright as the baked maple. I thought it looked great, a nice matte finish and a grain very similar to real ebony. Only time with tell, but I suspect it will be ok for the long haul.
The Chibsons just can't get the shape perfectly copied. There's always a slight variation from the real ones, some more subtle than others (depends on the factory). These Ace guitars ARE getting really popular. It just goes to show how influential Ace was to our generation.
Thanks for getting back to me,i just wonder why they never used the mother of pearl inlays like the other guitars but i know they have to cut cost in some areas. We worked it out if i got one shipped to Australia,it will cost around $320 more.Anyway for me i loved that guitar all my life and Ace made me play in the first place. My guitar are only around $2oo each but i love them.Thank you Graeme
I don't think I'd have time for 1:1 lessons, considering work and family and all that, but I'm thinking about putting together a series of lesson videos. They'd be music theory and stuff, but with metal and rock references. So stay tuned. More info on that when I have some better idea on the framework.
Thanks!! I think that one cost $2,200 and he bought it on sale for $1,979 (10% off). A pretty good price, considering the Classic Customs are around the same money and I liked this one more than the Classics, for sure.
Thanks! I use GR5 and TH2 for my software amps. They both appear as plugins in my recording software. I just have to insert them into the track. No problems, but GR5 is a resource hog. You will need a strong computer to run GR5 without much processing delay.
Totally agree, Chad. This one is heavy; really heavy. I doubt it's chambered. It's a really nice guitar, but I have a real problem dropping big cash on a guitar. If I had $4000 to blow, I'd set aside $400 for a new guitar (used is ok) and put rest into my house. That's a better investment, imho.
You raise the central discussion surrounding not just guitars, but many items out of Asia (not just China, but Indonesia, Taiwan, Korea and even Japan). The Gibson I play in this video is $2200, but the Chinese Standard I have cost $200. While the Gibson is definitely nicer, it's not 10x nicer. Bobby has a few knockoffs, too, and even he will tell you that some of them are damn nice, more than "playable," actually really beautiful guitars.
Thrilled to see this in my sub-box! There's something totally badass about a triple humbucker guitar. I've always loved the look of the Frehley LP and similar layouts. You're buddy has exquisite taste....:) GR5 really grabs that lead tone by the balls! Sounds HUGE!.... I love it! Hopin to see more vids from ya in the near future...Cheers!
I don't think it needs any care. It's a synthetic material, so I don't think it will dry out like natural wood (especially ebony, which has a lot of natural oil). It's made from recycled newspapers and resins and mostly used for counter tops (like Corian). It's designed to last for years with constant use in restaurants and bars while looking like real wood.
With the Budokan, there are the VOS models that are numbered 1-150 in which I have one (#77) which cost 4500-4800 new. Then you have the Aged Budokan models which were all signed by ace that ran 12,000-15,000 I think there were 100 of those and then the model that your looking at which is the bottom of the rung which has a different fingerboard. Doesn't mean it's not a descent guitar. Might want to look at the Epi Budokan, all three pick-ups are hooked up and it has monster tone. Cost - 5/8 hund
It's the reverb that's in Guitar Rig 5. I think it's called the "Little Reflektor" and uses convolution algorithms to get its response to audio signals.
Great review of the guitar down to earth , entertaining and fun to watch, I ordered my guitar today. Wasn't sure just how good of a guitar it might be which is why I am glad you uploaded this video, it convinced me to buy it.
I agree with all that. Remembering that these are still around $300-$500 more than the Custom Classics, they're still a good deal. Comparing it to a nearly-identically priced Gibson Standard, I'd take this any day.
Yes Jeff, Your Seeing Ace with the Custom Les Paul they made for him in 97. Funny thing is, I haven't seen Ace play a budokan since they have been released.
Thanks! I liked the Richlite. I thought it looked damn close to ebony, and it wasn't super bright like the baked maple. It was darker than baked maple, too, with a nice matte finish. I was skeptical, but it turned out to be surprisingly nice.
YEAH! Love that tune. I have a few old photos up on the Facebook page, but no plans for a video anytime soon. It's tough enough getting these ones up here! lol
I felt that the body was a little thicker and a neck a touch wider. The baked maple was definitely brighter than the Richlite fingerboard. The nut on this was cut better than the Classic Custom. This was heavier than the Classic Custom. I like the larger banjo tuning keys better. Of the two, I give the Ace a definite advantage over the Classic Custom.
Pixxy, maybe if you can revisit what China is doing with the latter style of Ace Signature Gibsons. If you like this as the real deal the Chibson Ace Signature guitars are incredible and only a few hundred dollars.
Thumbs down?!? Naw, this thing is nice, Shawn. Heavy and solid, it is quite the beast. I know you love your Grecos and Orvilles, but this is a nice guitar.
Great reviews. You helped me decide on the Classic Custom by the way so thanks. The wine red one in fact. Got it last week and of the 7 Gibsons that have found their way into the stash over the years, it's my favorite. I'm not up on all the computer based amp rigs but I gotta tell ya...that sounds nice. Sounds quite "brown" to my ears.
I've seen it, but I never considered it due to the cost. The two VST amp suites combined were under $400, so it's hard to look at the AxeFX at more than twice the price.
I think other people have covered the Custom, and I'm not sure there's much to point out with all the paint on it. Most of the distinguishing details are in the construction that is covered by the paint.
She quite the looker! lol Seriously, though, it's a helluva guitar. I liked it a lot more than the Classic Custom he brought over in the winter. I needed you for this one, Mike. I was having trouble remember all the classic Ace riffs, which would have been no problem for you.
Thanks for showing the Gibson Ace Frehley Budokan,i'm so happy you like it so much and it's not rubbish and the look of that Guitar is pure Ace.Please let us know what the cost of them are because i really thinking of buying one and keeping for life. Thanks you Graeme
Thanks Leo! Oh, the Chinese ones are fun to play and are a low-cost way to mess around, but they can't really compete with a $2,000+ guitar. The Chinese ones are $200, so it would be interesting to see what they could do for $800. I wonder if they could produce a competing guitar if given enough cash (but still less than half the cost of the retail one).
It was an interesting detail to the guitar. I liked it. I thought it looked pretty good and didn't really impart much difference in sound from the ebony. I thought the baked maple was bright and affected the sound more than Richlite.
It's too complicated to get into here, but do a Google search for "feds raid Gibson" and you'll see why they have very little ebony right now. It seems to be available other places. Fender, for example, uses ebony on a couple of the EVH models. Carvin still uses ebony on a number of their guitars. Larrivee still uses it on most of their models. Gibson had their (allegedly illegally harvested) wood confiscated by the feds, so they switched to baked maple for rosewood and Richlite for ebony.
Thanks! I must know one Bratta riff, but I have to say, I can't think of one right now. He was huge in the late 80s, so I'm sure I must have learned something of his. Plus we has a regular customer at the music store that was a freak for anything by White Lion or Bratta. I'm sure he must have shown me some stuff.
I think I like this one better than the aged one. I like a nice guitar, not all beat up. I know what they're going for, but I was never a fan of the whole "relic" thing, anyway. I'll say this much, this thing was a BEAST! Very heavy and solid.
Thanks! Actually, yeah, I'm down about 55lbs since March and still going. I'm hoping for another 50+ by Halloween. And no, the center pickup doesn't smoke, which is a bummer. C'mon, Gibson! lol

the tuners aren't regular electric guitar tuners they're banjo tuners and as for the pick ups and toggle switch it's only wired to/for the bridge p.u. , the 2nd and 3rd position on the toggle is meant to be used as a killswitch
I go back and forth on the middle pickup. I like the sound of it, but I hate hitting it with my pick when I'm playing. I generally lower the middle pickup very low to avoid hitting it, so that kills the tone and really makes it a bit useless. So I'm torn on how much I like it.
Love your channel. I don't know what your background is or your 9 - 5 but I gotta say man... your videos are top notch. Great playing, factual info, high quality and entertaining too. Quick question... what are your three all time favorite solos?
Hey buddy congrats on that axe! but I have to ask, I'm considering to buy a LP custom but I noticed in the 2012 new models that replacement of richlite instead of ebony for most of traditionalists it's seems like a pain, but it seems to play well. Can you compare it w/ebony in richness and craftmanship? I can say newer Gibsons are really neat in their building so I was wondering if that change of materials are worth and specially how they feel in your fingertips compared to old fingerboards. ty
Have you tried amplitube? I used Guitar Rig 4 & 5, now I am a firm believer in Amplitube 3. Some of the amps are AMAZING. I have a Marshall TSL and I have a rig setup on Amplitube that sounds better to me. It is beautiful, The best clean tone I have ever heard.
Hey dude, love your videos. You sure as hell have some nice chops and a unique style! I just wanted to know where you stand or what your opinion is on Epiphone guitars. Cheers!
Like all your videos, never dull . And they keep me informed .
Thanks

MAKE THE SMOKE COME OUT OF IT
+Timothy Cote isn't the headstock inlay supposed to be space aces face??

+Timothy Cote I believe the guitar with his 1978 solo face on the headstock came out in 1997
Your attitude towards music and life in general is inspring. love the videos. Your playing is also awesome! Thanks a ton for making the videos!!

Thanks! This was fun one to play. I agree about the triple pickups -- totally badass!
Nice!! The triple-pickup "Black Beauty" is one of the greatest looking guitars ever. A timeless classic.
You always make the videos to a great little guitar-moment. Really enjoy.
I don't think I'd have time for 1:1 lessons, considering work and family and all that, but I'm thinking about putting together a series of lesson videos. Beautiful Ace Frehley Gibson Les Paul. Great review and demo as usual brother, rock on.🎸🎵🎶

Excellent video, as always. Cool guitar, too. Thanks, Steve!
Ace Rules...it's that simple
Yup. I remember a buddy showing me the album jacket for "Too Fast for Love" back in '82. He was way ahead of the curve....
6:26 love that stadium sound man
WOW, I like that clean on the neck pickup. Sounds very acoustic like and ambient...

That's exactly what the Classic Custom had, file marks. This one was cleaner, for sure, and more consistent from fret to fret.
Sweet guitar,I would love to own one. Thanks for the video.
Very cool guitar love your videos man keep up the good work.

no, it's not fake. The reason why this doesn't have the aged finish is because this was made in the Gibson USA factory, and not in the custom shop.
Thumbs down?!? Naw, this thing is nice, Shawn. Heavy and solid, it is quite the beast. I know you love your Grecos and Orvilles, but this is a nice guitar.

Man I thnk you deserve all the les Paul's you review!!!!! Man you are awesomr
You should get the Chibson version !
That is one serious powerhouse rock weapon!
can´t believe guitar rig can sound so nice!

great review brings back memories and you can jam nice job
Nice! My buddy Bobby scored another one, too. He had to buy his used because they've been discontinued.
It was an interesting detail to the guitar. I liked it. I thought it looked pretty good and didn't really impart much difference in sound from the ebony. I thought the baked maple was bright and affected the sound more than Richlite.
I figured as much. I mean, what ELSE could they have used? That pretty much was the pickup of choice for Ace.
You sounded great,I was checking out the GR5 on the Guitar Center site and they have some kind of control peddle that comes with it.
That has always been my dream gUiTaR!🎸🙄 LuV iT🎸

They are Dimarzio Super Distrortions... :-) Such an amazing guitar. Thanks for the review... Cheers and rock on!
Damn, I have to save money for this guitar, it sounds absolutely amazaing! I'm not a big KISS fan but I really like this guitar.
Thanks! That's Parasite by KISS (Hotter Than Hell and Alive! albums).
really like your videos man! regards from Mexico City!
I like your vids man keep making them!
God my dream guitar right there man
You are correct on the pickups; DiMarzio Super Distortions.
Thanks! Actually, yeah, I'm down about 55lbs since March and still going. I'm hoping for another 50+ by Halloween. And no, the center pickup doesn't smoke, which is a bummer. C'mon, Gibson! lol
God, I love this guitar.
Replace thayer with this geezer !might have to make the costume xxxxxxxxxLarge!!!!😃
Agreed!
I would love to have one of those
your videos are awesome! love your covers, and the chinese les paul videos!!!
Agreed! I think my response when he texted me the photo was "Holy Shit!!" Follow by, "Bring that thing over here now!!"
That is one hell of a beautiful guitar right there :)
I think that one was with Bruce, right? I lost track in the 90s. lol
Nice review. My guess is that this guitar has no chambers if it was based off of Ace's 1970's era Gibson. I have a 1975 Gibson Les Paul Standard which weighs in at just about 10 lbs. It is a great sounding guitar with sustain that lasts for days but it incredibly heavy to have strapped to your shoulder for very long.
I use TH2 by Overloud and Guitar Rig 5 by Native Instruments. I can't post links in the comments, but a quick Google search should bring you straight to their sites.

Love your channel. I don't know what your background is or your 9 - 5 but I gotta say man... your videos are top notch. Great playing, factual info, high quality and entertaining too.
Quick question... what are your three all time favorite solos?
When they look that good I refer to them as She lol.Congrats to her new owner She sounds great!!!
That's the guitar I want. Nice tone. Guitar rig? Wow. Need to set that. I hear the richlite ain't bad at all. Good review.
I can say newer Gibsons are really neat in their building so I was wondering if that change of materials are worth and specially how they feel in your fingertips compared to old fingerboards. ty
Love to hear this thing staight through a good tube amp with no efects and natural OD, like a JTM 45...but it's still a great review , as usual!!
Happy now , got my replacement !!!!! :)
Thanks! I'd love to own one, too. lol
Cheers!
it sounds very versatile
Gret video! But I've always wondered why Bobby has never appeared on "The Basement Show"?
Ordering mine shortly ! :)
