    I'm ashamed of myself, my "book press" is my desk and laptop and my "pva glue"is elmer's glue😧😂 lol. Still got the job done though. Love your videos

      Elmer's glue is PVA glue, PVA is something in the glue :/

    • @chrysanthy
      @chrysanthy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Miss Kay Don't use Elmer's. It isn't pH neutral and the acid will eventually eat away at the paper.

    • @chrysanthy
      @chrysanthy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And there are some affordable bookbinding glues, just search for "ph neutral PVA glue" on Amazon and you'll find a ton meant for bookbinding.

    I'm still figuring that out myself... I plan on trying many types over time and sharing the results with you all :) But in the meantime, if you find another glue that says "flexible" and "archival safe" on the bottle, that might work as well. You can also find PVA for sale online :)

    one thing, for those who have never done binding before, all paper has grain to it. All the parts of the book have to have the grain running parallel to the spine. If you have the grain running different directions, the book will be all twisted up and definitely won't lay flat. I mention this because there are questions in the comments about making their own books.

    • @jenjen6852
      @jenjen6852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      AffordBindEquipment What is grain or what do you mean by grain?

    • @AffordBindEquipment
      @AffordBindEquipment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Most manufactured paper products have grain. Grain refers to the orientation of the fibers in the paper going pretty much in one direction. If you take a piece of newspaper and tear it from top to bottom, it tears pretty much in a straight line. If you try to tear it sideways, it goes all over the place. There are several ways to tell the grain of paper.

    I think this is the best teaching/tutorial video I've ever seen from the USA, on any subject. Usually, the presenters put themselves front & center and do a thoroughly good job of massaging their own egos for 30 minutes, whilst, if you manage to learn anything about the subject at hand, that's a bonus.
    Thank you, Sea Lemon. I don't know who you are but you're a gifted teacher. I'll be coming to your tutorials first, from now on.

    this is EXACTLY the kind of tutorial i was looking for! i've been wanting to make my own book (a collection of my favourite short stories by lord dunsany) and thought "it can't be that hard to do it yourself, just glue a bunch of papers together, right?" then i found your tutorials and was like "man, this is rocket science! i can't sew at all, look at all these tools i need!" etc. then i found THIS tutorial, and what do you know, you CAN just glue a bunch of papers together! so simple! cheers :)

  • @Sakuems
    @Sakuems 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just a question, since the book press is quite large, if you want to glue more than one text block at a time, you can right ? you can just add a random smaller book in between and sandwich 4 or 5 stacks of pages and glue everything instead of just doing one text block at a time ? that would save a lot of time since i'm planning on selling books, i can't really just do them one by one. Also, if i use signature, i can staple them by stack of like 8 or even 16 pages and then simply glue all signatures to a cover ? this will be sturdier if it has 2 bindings methods combined ?

  • @CSGraves
    @CSGraves 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I had serious trouble with pages separating using this method, even using the techniques in the other video on strengthening perfect binding. Since then I've read that another technique is to clamp closer to the foreedge of the pages, and fan the spine side down, applying glue so that it covers a small surface of the page near the spine, and not just the back edge. the pages are fanned in the opposite direction and repeated, then clamped in the book press and the spine glued again. Next time I try perfect binding I'll give this a whirl and see if it doesn't hold up better.
    This said though I love your bookbinding videos.

    • @AffordBindEquipment
      @AffordBindEquipment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fan binding is the only way to really insure the pages do not come out. Clamp the text block about 3" from the spine before you fan. That way you get a decent amount of glue on the surface of the page, not just the minuscule edge.

    • @sararobert9855
      @sararobert9855 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is another way to get the glue in there. In the printing industry we actually scratch the spine before applying the glue. This breaks the paper fibers and helps the glue go where it needs to go. It is usually done by the machine but when it needs to be done by hand, just using a cutting knife and slashing it in crossed directions does the trick.
      I don't know if my explanation is clear but I hope it will be useful if you decide to give it a try :)

    • @MarkowskyArt
      @MarkowskyArt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @burntroseoof8344
      @burntroseoof8344 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The way I've seen a lot of people do it is by gluing a piece of paper that is a couple inches longer than width of the text block to the back (glued side) of the text block to make it more secure, and then fold the edges over and glue it to the endpapers of the book like normal. Hope this helps!

    Nope. That is why it's important to use a "flexible" glue, like PVA. So it bends with the book.

    This is so much more simple than any of the other binding methods on your page :D In that case, what is/are the benefit/s of the other binding methods? Like vs. the coptic stitch. Thanks!

    • @SeaLemonDIY
      @SeaLemonDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The benefit of the coptic stitch vs. perfect binding is that there are extra stitches holding the pages together, which means extra strength. I usually prefer the extra stitching just for that piece of mind there is an extra layer of support, making my book more durable. Plus it can lay flat easier. For some tips on adding strength to perfect binding, check out this video - bit.ly/PerfectTip
      Hope that helps!

    Hey! Thanks for your videos. I was wondering how I could stick this into a soft journal cover? Maybe glue fabric to where the binding was glued? Then glue to cover. Or maybe that’s not possible. ;)

    I've got a selection of different types of paper, from magazine cut outs to very thin card, that I want to bind together this way, will this work for the different thicknesses?

    I am looking to bind over 400 pages. Will this work? There are a lot of books out there that are over 400 pages!! I appreciate the help. This is the first time I am doing this and most of the time my DIYs never work out :( The book I am trying to bind wil be made up of standard computer paper.

      Courtney Moore you would most likely have to bind the pages together before glueing them.
