- A shortened version of an interview of legendary Actor Stewart Granger on with 'Afternoon plus' host Mavis Nicholson. Granger chats to Mavis about his life in the movies his loves and why he never wanted to be an actor in the first place. First transmitted on Thames television in 1981
I always admired Stewart Granger, but was so disappointed when I heard other actors say that he was an awful person. It is good to see him here explaining himself, admitting that he is difficult and giving the reasons why.
Stephen, Elizabeth Taylor spoke of all of the men that she slept with; who were Bi-sexual! She said that she slept in bed with Stewart and Robert Stack! Shocking to me that all of the great male actors, almost all preferred men! Read the book about Elizabeth Taylor's 1st 5 husbands who were all Bi-Sexuals!
What I love about Stewart Granger and his book "Sparks Fly Upward" was his total honesty about his mistakes and flaws. There was nothing held back in his book and was one of the most interesting Auto-biographies I have ever read, so much so I read it twice. It was at times heart breaking, funny and totally absorbing. A great man and a great read.
A truly great actor who I think underestimated himself. His performances were hugely better than he makes out. A beautiful and talented man with a legacy of great movies. From the best era for movies. His autobiography is an excellent read. Written the way he speaks and every word his own. Honest, moving, sad, funny, and very personal. I can highly recommend it.
Another great British actor who comes across as very honest in his interviews. Brilliant. Always loved those period movies he did with James Mason, Margaret Lockwood and Phylis Calvert.
Scaramouche is his very greatest movie.
He still looked like a movie star in this interview.
One of my friends, met him when he was filming in india, and he was an absolute gent to him. No doubt, he was a great actor.
A friend's brother-in-law was a camera man when filming with Granger in Yugoslavia and said he was a real gent, funny and a marvelous raconteur.
I met Granger. Never.
Stewart Granger, Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Steve McQueen, Paul Newmann and John Wayne are for me the most Iconic Hollywood Stars.
Carlos Simoes agree with the list...I would add James Garner. Great actors...all of them.
Let's not forget Kirk Douglas.

And James Mason and Sean Connery.
Also Forrest Tucker.
He aged so well, physically and in character.
In his early films he was athletic almost like Tarzan .

His pre-Hollywood movies show Grainger at his most relaxed and charming. One of my favorites, with Jean Simmons, is Adam and Evelyn. Thanks for posting this.
A man's man bigger than live on screen and off. His presence on screen made men admire him and women drool. Such a great actor, you forgot he was acting. They don't make great films like his anymore. no one can replace him. Thank you for sharing.
Actors from the 1930's - 50s' spoke such beautiful English and they had class.
I'm now starting to watch Stewart Granger movies on DVD and just loving them. He was a far better actor than he ever got credit for. I loved his movie Adam & Evelyn that you can watch on TH-cam. Stewart (Jimmy) Granger has given a sincere and wonderful interview. His book' Sparks Fly Upward' was so good, so insightful, so honest and hilariously funny that I had to read it twice. It's once of the best books I have ever read about an International Star in Hollywod.
I LOVE Stewart Granger....why don't they make men like this anymore? I was born at the wrong time.
Great interview! I could happily have done with much more... Insightful, intelligent questions from Mavis, a lot of uncompromising self honesty from the great SG along with the charm and good humour. Interviews with actors nowadays are usually just trivial puffery and seldom reach the quality of this one..
Fine actor, honest about himself, good example of masculinity, and married to Jean Simmons in her pretty prime. We need more gentlemen like him and ladies like her now.

Stewart Granger is one of my all time favorite actors, i've seen all his movies many times over.
Imagine these questions to the stars of today. before the interview for example Brad Pitt's agent would make sure certain questions would not come up. its incredible the stars of yesterday are real men they just say what they feel and think.
Stewart absolute in 'Bhowani Junction.' .. .one of the great performances in a truthful film.
The best movie star interviews I've seen, of legendary male actors, to date, are/were, in no particular order, those of Peter O'Toole, Omar Sharif, Richard Harris, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Jimmy Stewart, George Hamilton, and, of course, one of the world's most handsome, debonair and talented leading men/actors, the late Stewart Granger...This is/was due, primarily, to their quick wittedness, charming and engaging personalities, and they having been brilliant storytellers.
There's nothing better, than, an enjoyable, engaging and exciting trip down memory lane.

He was always one of my favorite Actors. I was 8 years old when I saw him in "Scaramouche". I loved the film. I also always loved his wife Jean Simmons. She was one of the prettiest young actresses around when I was growing up. Pictures like "The Robe"), "Dimitrius And The Gladiator were my favorites as a young boy of 10 and 11. Great looking couple too !
This is the man I emulate when I do acting work. He is exactly like me. Not brando, not pacino, not de Niro, but STEWART GRAINGER of all the actors. And it has done me well.

Scaramouche is his best movie for sure.

I love all of Stuart Granger’s movies,but my favorites are the swords buckling one sush as scaramooche,the scarlet pimpinel,the swordsman from Viena,sodoma and Gomorrah and many others that I cannot remember right now but what I do know is that he was one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood a true gentleman and a wonderful person that always showed a lot of respect for others what a great actor the don’t make it like them any more

They also appeared in "Caesar and Cleopatra," but not together - Granger had a more substantial part in that movie while Simmons was just a kid playing the harp with no speaking lines. I think "Caesar and Cleopatra" was before they knew each other.

I read his autobiography, a great read. Interestingly his real name was James Stewart but he had to change it Grainger.
Went through security at Heathrow just in front of him. I was surprised by his size such a big man. I comment to him, it's Scaramouche.
I met him on an airplane once, well i didn't really meet him, i was boarding, in the Isle and he was seated in first class. I was standing next to him and he looked at me and smiled, I freaked out a little and was my turn to move. He kinda laughed at me. It was great

Parents and your formative years really affect you and make you I agree. I notice with me, the things I don't like about my mother, I take the opposite stance, since I was a child. I've recently been fangirling over Delon and he was a great womaniser who is very complex. He can be very loyal and devoted as a friend yet cruel and cold as a lover or father. In his last years, he did not talk to his mother for over 15 years yet in his old age, the keepsakes he always has with him everywhere he goes, beside his bed are all from his mother. I think he resents her for abandoning him as a 4yr old and yet craves her love. Bec of this complex relationship, it has tainted hus treatment of women. Same with elvis and the weakness he saw in his father

Stew bought a beautiful ranch outside of Nogales Arizona...My step father, Joe Alvarez met him and had a drink in the livingroom with him. A most gracious gentleman...At times I drive there..to the Yerba Buena Ranch, now known as Kino Springs...and sit in my car...looking at the pond with ducks...and wish for the 1950's again. 😢

What a true gentleman. Only seen him in Scaramouche. I weight train and noticed he had fantastic genetics to be a bodybuilder. Wide shoulders and thick legs . I don't how tall he was but he was defo very physically gifted.

I always liked Mr Granger's movies, but seems he was a very difficult man to work with. The late Roger Moore told the story in his autobiography that Richard Burton met Stewart Granger at a party during the 1970s and Granger was complaining that he had not been offered any work for twelve years!..Burton felt sorry for him against Roger Moore's advice he offered him a part in his new movie The Wild Geese. All of Mr Granger's scenes were with Richard Burton over the course of three days..Roger Moore met Burton when the three days shooting were finished and much to Moore's amusement Burton was fuming...''that bastard Grainger ranted Burton..I never want to set eyes on him again as long as I live...So he was awkward and troublesome which undoubtedly damaged his career but to his credit he suggests as much in this interview...but he made some unforgettable movies
Don't believe everything you read. Burton was no angel and Roger Moore was no great actor.
Granger's filmography shows he worked steadily prior to 1970 so I would not believe this story.

The other actors in the films he was in made him look good. Like Jean Simmons in Footsteps In The Fog. She was amazing, yet he was simply handsome. Thats not acting really.

feminine, a very good actress and obviously a nice person.Losing Jean indicates to me that his past made him self-destructive and

Her constant interruptions before he finishes explains something is beyond irritating and tiresome . Yet again , another jumped interviewer ,getting in the way by dint of her inadequacy and intelligence .

Stewart Granger was a very flawed man.. but he wasn’t a hypocrite, he was bluntly honest about who he was and didn’t hide the fact that he had a shed load of faults.. I guess it’s just the English way. You don’t fanny about a problem or try and dress it up. You just face facts full in the face and carry on.
