    I have loved following your adventures! We are all so proud of you. I would love to see any content you want to put out. Anything about running would be great too! I started running at the beginning of summer (just before my 40th birthday) and I am loving it so much. ☺️

    Moved to Maryville TN in October. Started hiking Smokies every weekend. What a beautiful place. I have watched all your videos and appreciate all the information I have learned. The Five Bear Myths was great. You have inspired and helped me to feel more confident in my hiking. Please keep doing hiking videos. God bless and have a great 2021.

    I really enjoyed following your hike. I hiked the AT in 2005 at age 62 so being able to vicariously hike with you was awesome. When I hiked the AT I had to complete it in 4 months to insure I had a job when I returned. Fear can do wonders. So many of your followers want an estimate on how much the hike costs. I am probably an example of the lower limit on cost. Approximately 3/4 of my resupplies were purchased at home and mailed to trail towns. I never slack packed, can recall only taking 2 shuttles, stayed mostly in my tent with occasional stays in a hostel. I would pick up my resupply in a town, do laundry, often find somewhere I could pay for a shower and hit the trail. I do not think my costs on trail exceeded $2000. My son says I was really hard core. Hike your own hike! Hope to see you out there again.

    I do have a request I would like to see your reaction when you were in Duncannon Pennsylvania and also your reaction whenever you were in New Jersey and when you had to hike through New York I would like to know how you were feeling what you were sensing especially what your thoughts were since this whole covid-19 was going on while you were hiking and how did you get through it were there places that one to accept cash where you were forced to use a credit card you know just things like that that you normally wouldn't think of but it might help other hikers in the near future to be prepared for that thought process thank you I just wanted to ask those questions because I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that has those questions in the back of their minds and Keep up the Great work that you Do braids good luck hopefully you start a new job soon.

      I already have that video edited but I can tell you it really varies based off the gear you buy. I’d say you’ll spend probably a few thousand for good gear but some people go out with very inexpensive or free gear. Maybe I’ll add that as a video to do

    Braids! We are stinking proud and excited for you on this accomplishment! Didn't get to watch live but had the chance to last night. Honestly, I know you kept apologizing for being slow but the entire discussion was intriguing and the hr and half went by quick. I'd like to say thanks for being open about sleeping with your food. Pineapple and myself had THREE experiences this fall where we couldn't hang and I was so conflicted and nervous about it. My hubby got me the ursack for Christmas and I can't wait to try it. I will still try to hang but it gives me a little peace of mind if we run into problems again. Up next for us is the Smokies. Keeping our fingers crossed we see you! Again, congrats and thank you for taking us along the journey.

    If I was to do this hike, what are the hardest places to resupply in terms of mileage off the trail where it was a long walk or a not possible to hike from the trail to resupply? If I was to send myself boxes where are the best places to pick them up? Did the hubs help with the logistics while you were hiking such as setting you up with rooms and then telling you where to go or were you able to fully do all the logistics by yourself? I guess those are the areas where I would struggle the most going solo.

    Do you think doing a flip flop made your hike longer then it would have been if you would have just continued going Northbound?

      I really don’t know the number. I did not spend more than I budgeted but I would say it’s best that a thru hiker have that at a minimum to thru hike comfortably. Having what Loran suggested would definitely be better.

    Missed the Q & A but wanted you to know there were sooo many things that you inspired me while on the trail. The biggie by far was when you camped alone without phone service. Wow! I’m not sure I could do that. Also, if you have time, one question... can mice get inside your tent? I’m terrified of mice but really want to do some hiking/camping in the GSM this year. 😬

    • @ginnycarr3969
      @ginnycarr3969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never mind about the mice. Lol, you addressed it in the Q&A. Hilarious! White mouse climbing on your tent. At least he was outside the tent.

    I'm sorry I missed the live portion of your Q&A but I did have one question that I've been dying to hear you answer if you would and it may be better just asking you one on one: I would love it if you could expound upon your relationship with your tramily. It seems like you were real into them real quick and just as quickly you were done with them. Can you talk openly about why your perspective of hiking with Mayo and your tramily? Great hike! Thanks

    • @HikingwithBraids
      @HikingwithBraids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I answer this in my most recent live video. All the hikers I met on trail were very nice but at the end of the day I set out to do this hike on my own and that’s what I did.

  • @flippinwithamy3397

    I know exactly what you mean. Talking about how much you spent would be pointless. Someone could plan to do it one way, get there and do the total opposite. I know I may have commented before. But, I watch you on two of my TH-cam channels. Amy Hikes. I always watch several peoples at hikes. I only watched you this time.

      @iamloved223 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a future thru hiker it's nice to hear what past hikers have spent while on trail so I can make sure I am financially well prepared. Yes some are going to spend more than others and Braids having to stop part way through and then flip flop to the finish over such a long period of time means she will have spent more, absolutely nothing wrong with that.

    I appreciate your honesty on the bear bag situation! I live in Maine and do a lot of hiking on the AT…..and the vast majority of hikers I’ve seen do exactly what you did. Hoping to start my hike in Georgia in March - will be fun to finally see a new part of the trail!

  • @ritaabbott5760

    LOL, I slept many times with my food bag, wrapped in contractor bag and in festable of my tent. In shelters, wrapped and next to me. I wake up easy, mice never touched my food because if plastic rattled ,I woke up. I too,used cables, bear boxes, poles when available. I avoided areas where a lot of bear scat was around, I avoided loud smelling food, like tuna. Sometimes, the smell of food hanging in trees can lure a bear into camp, and cooking where you sleep at night , could lure them into camp. I know, people out there are saying noooo!!!!

    Happy New Year ! 😊. Finally able to watch the live stream all the way through. Thank you for your honesty about your food bag. It’s really helpful to have that perspective. I’m leaning towards an Ursack , know it’s heavy , but also know myself and my food bag hanging abilities /desire especially after a long tiring day. Looking forward to your next videos 🙂

      @@HikingwithBraids You know...your "true confession" of the .2 mi sin. I worry about temporarily re-routed sections you also encountered, etc....
      I still even think about when the trail went from Pine Mtn 2 miles over to Wilburn Ridge at Grayson Highlands. Hiked it several times before they added about 6 miles to the AT. And I still wonder should I go back and walk those miles. Guess some things you just need to let go of!! Look forward to your upcoming videos!! Danny C Booker A.T.Hobo

    Thank you for the live I really enjoyed it. If Hobs doesn’t mind a question... he mentioned being type 1 and I was wondering as I am also and find even for a day hike I have to take so much stuff for the diabetes with me for lows etc. what is the longest time in one stretch he has gone out on the trail and was there any food/snack that works for him to stay as level as he can?

    • @JerryPardon
      @JerryPardon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The longest I’ve been in the back country was in Glacier National Park on our honeymoon. Roughly 6 days 5 nights. I had to cut back on my long acting insulin and my blood sugars stayed roughly around 75 - 100. I did experience some lows and what I found that worked best for me in those situations and I still carry them with me everywhere I go, is runners gu energy gels with caffeine. My wife introduced them to me and I can’t thank her enough. The caffeine really helps me when I’m fighting to bring up the lows and to keep me motivated. I usually keep a minimum of 3 in my hip belt. The package can be pretty sticky so I carry a small ziplock to put the wrappers in. Snickers are my go to while hiking to maintain and some kind of cliff bars.
      I’ll be honest with you, I’ve made mistakes. I haven’t ate when I should have or very little out of exhaustion. It is a constant struggle to stay consistent and I’m far from perfect. I’ll take a higher blood sugar any day while I’m hiking than a low.
      The best way I’ve found to be better prepared is to look up the terrain, elevation and temps if possible so I’ll know how many gu’s to take with me, how much insulin to cut back on and then I’ll take double that amount just to be safe. I’d rather come home with a surplus than not have enough.
      One thing I haven’t mentioned is my blood sugar monitor. It has a rechargeable batter so I take a power bank with me to charge it and my phone. In cold weather I’ve had it die and I’ve had to rely on how I was feeling till it was charged enough to check.
      One thing I would recommend when backpacking in cold conditions, is find a insulated jacket with inside pockets to keep your insulin in, blood glucose monitor and strips while you sleep.
      Again I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve had insulin freeze and once it was warm enough to give myself an injection, it had gone bad.
      Brenda R I hope this helps and I hope you have a very happy 2021!
      Best Wishes,
      Hobs

    You still have time to drive out to that 0.2 mile section in TN and complete the AT😉. If you do, you should do a live video of the entire trail.
    Hanging a bear bag is a pain. I have only slept with mine once because there was no good place to hang it and it’s was super late ( made me nervous all night)
