Emily's guy friend or whatever he was, waking up to see her contorted on the floor looking up at him was probably the scariest thing I've ever seen in movie history. I'll never forget the first time I saw it, it sent chills literally all over my body
Fun fact Jennifer Carpenter actually has gone on record to say that when she worked on the film and she was doing specific scenes with the contortion of her back, there was one scene in particular where she arched her back while standing at almost a complete 90° angle that was in one take. she then collapsed was taken to the hospital and they found out that she had fractured her back for that scene, when she got in the hospital the director said "what the hell were you thinking doing something like that?!" And she goes "did you get the shot?" He went "yes" she replied "I was thinking this is going to look amazing on film" Damn was she right
Where Did you even get that from ? She literally states in an interview that she had no injuries during the shoot! Did you just make up a ”fun fact” for likes or am i missing something here ?
This movie is indeed underrated. I recall the first time I saw it. I couldn't believe how scary it was given how straight they were playing it. There's a scene in a dormitory when the effects the possession are just starting to really take hold for Jennifer Carpenter's character that was really unnerving. I just remember being thoroughly impressed with this one.
Ah yes, with the pen holder shaking and falling on the floor. In the unrated version of the film in that same scene, they added length to the struggle of her in bed where the demon is trying to remove her shirt, it really makes it extra creepy.
This movie is a piece of shit. It's based on a real case here in Germany in the 70s where a schizophrenic girl was denied proper treatment and instead was tortured and starved to death during weeks of "exorcisms". Apart from being basically murdered by her insane Parents and their Priest the whole story got so twisted that she now is actually posessed and her parents and the Priest are the "good guys"... Disgusting. *spit*
This frightened me more than The Exorcist. I watched it it gave me the Willies then i woke suddenly in the night and was facing the clock radio that said 3:00 am exactly, just like in the movie. That scared me more and i recall feeling freaked out to wake at exactly 3 am which laura Linneys character does a few times in the film. I was lay there wondering what is going on waking at that time. Was it a coincidence or psychological, my body clock or something or was it some spirit messing with me. I don't know but it frightened me to wake at exactly 3 after what happened in the film. That's only natural to feel a little freaked out.
@@PeterBerisha True but Linda Blair had the advantage of endless takes. It took over a year to make the Exorcist. A lot of effort was put into it. Still a good job considering her age et cetera.

Tbh The Exorcist doesn't really "scare" me. The Exorcist is deeply and profoundly disturbing, unsettling, and uncomfortable. But I've never found it scary. Now that's not to say it's not a good movie! It's a great movie and it's a classic for a reason! I actually don't like to watch it that often because of how disturbing it is lol. But yeah I definitely found The Exorcism of Emily Rose to be much scarier than The Exorcist, whereas The Exorcist was more disturbing
Jennifer Carpenter is one of the most underrated actresses of her time, and this is my favorite performance from her, even more than her role as Dexter's sister.
It's a shame that the most interesting scenes with Dexter's sister were after the writing of the series started to suck. Those downward spiral scenes where she was strung out on drugs and booze were pretty great, along with when she finally hits rock bottom with her police chief boss.

This is based on the true story of a German girl, called Anneliese Michel. She suffered from epilepsy, and developed depression, and psychosis. Her medication and treatment seemed ineffectual, so she and her family, who were very religious, became convinced she was possessed by a demon. She died of malnutrition and dehydration after 67 exorcisms. The story was also told in the German movie "Requiem", which has a more realistic, documentary style.
I guess some people find it hard to fathom the existence of a spiritual world. Try listening to the recordings of her during the exorcism and tell me that is epilepsy.
This is one of those movies where it is just flat out baffling that critics didn't like it more. It's well shot, brilliantly acted, and has a riveting storyline. It's also a bonafide great example of "subverting expectations" which is a term that many critics seem to like throwing around, but few seem to actually understand the concept and purpose of.
I was also so annoyed when it came out and it was given lukewarm reviews from critics. I don't recall most of them but I think at least one complained that it didn't pick a side. Like it had to choose to be a possession film or a courtroom drama. People were idiots back then.
I think it might be because the film is not cynical in its attitude to faith. It is a straight tale good against evil. Critics might have preferred an indictment of religion.
The scene where she's bent backwards in a catatonic state and screams is the stuff of nightmares. I still remember watching this at a cinema which is no longer standing with an old girlfriend and whispering "you ever do that to me and ill pass out" the gag broke the tension which we both needed.

The scene where Emily runs out of her dorm in the rain and calls her family in terror was really affecting. She can't even speak, she's just sobbing into the phone in terror. Jennifer Carpenter did an amazing job in moments like these.

They made great use out of that apartment complex so it felt very claustrophobic and the scene on the stairs where they’re hauling ass and the camera man beats someone to death with the camera was all great. I still can’t believe they showed the literal last frame of the movie in the preview though...
@@lukavojinovic7246 So you know about the actual case - how come you like this POS movie that spits on her grave by pretending this girl that was denied proper treatment and got tortured and starved to death by her insane parents and their priest was anything but their victim?
Jennifer’s commitment to her performance is just next level. She’s equally terrifying and sympathetic. It’s hard to find that balance of being scary while possessed, but vulnerable when she’s a promising young college student. That’s not an easy task at all but she nailed it.
Yes, they had a snippet of the audio in an episode of Casefile podcast, and I was so terrified I tore my earphones off. I wish Annalise got real help though, not these 'exorcists' seeking fame after the Exorcist movie came out.
Is very loosely based on the Anneliese Michel case. But it was on another country, the age of the girl was different. The exorcism was more like a weekly thing that they did and she was already diagnosed for mental illness for years. So... it's based in a real incident but every character and situation in the movie is entirely fictional.
Except there were no demons, no possession. Just a very sick girl with idiotic, neglectful parents. And no, the Exorcist was not based on real events. People will believe any sort of nonsense.
If you don't know this movie is based on real life incidents of a German girl Anneliese Michelle who underwent Catholic exorcism rites during the year before her death in 1976. Her exorcism sound recordings are available in TH-cam and are extremely scary (just like Emily Rose in this movie).
When I was 19 I worked as a projectionist at my local movie theater. This movie scared the crap out of me when I had to run it. Then walking the dark theater hallways to make sure everything was working okay and hearing all the screams coming from that theater. Yep I was terrified for the whole run of that movie ( I do love it though)
RT is pretty much a hit-and-miss, so not always it reflects reality, even though it's an average of critics' ratings. All I need to know is this: Roger Ebert gave this movie 3/4.
This movie is one of the only ones to scare me as an adult. After watching, I was terrified for weeks of possibly waking up at 3 am. And then it happened. At that time I was having dry eye complications from surgery. One night I was having a nightmare that my eyes were damaged, and I could feel the pain and burning in my sleep. The pain woke me up as I realized my eyes were actually hurting from severe dryness. The time was 3:00 am on the minute. I went to the mirror and my eyes completely red/irritated. I thought I would be scared, but I just remember being frustrated, like the devil was trying to tear me down (I’m Christian). After that night, I wasn’t afraid anymore at least.
As you are going through horror movies, I have a request for you to review the scariest film I've ever seen, Requiem for a Dream. Many Horror movies scare you while you are watching them, but few haunt you for life like Requiem does.
Chris, have you seen the actual case this was based off of. There's audio files, documentaries and even transcripts of the actual exorcism. It's really interesting 💯
She was also heavily medicated for multiple issues, including schizophrenia and epilepsy. The whole possession part came after her parents decided to cold turkey the medication.
This film is so underrated. I saw this before I saw the exorcist and it scared me more and it was all because of Jennifer Carpenter. Phenomenal acting performance
Well, this IS THE movie that genuinely freaked me out. To be honest, it scared the shit out of me. And I'm not easily scared. Saw it when it came out and have not seen it once since. I found it so fucking scary. And THAT is a sign of good film making. Very very good film making
When I saw this film in the theater, the Witching Hour scenes left such a powerful impact on me, I'm still terrified as FUCK of 3 am. Those scenes are absolutely terrifying. Love LOVE that you chose this film, Chris!
I'm really glad you shined some light on this movie, Chris. Not a lot of people have given it a chance, so hopefully they will now. I placed it on my list of the scariest movies of all time.
One of the better and more unique exorcism movies out there. The tree scene was really creepy. Even though it was not necessarily a dark and gore fest.

I watched this movie alone when i was 8 years old, right after it came out, it scarred me for life. I still remember the scene where she wakes up on her dorm room at 3 am and walks out on the hallway, calmly, deadly. I never watched it again but I remember everything so vividly. As a kid who used to constantly watch horror films, a huge fan of japanese horror and the hellraiser series, I think its safe to say that nothing, ever, in my entire life, scared me as much as this movie did. I've been seeking this feeling ever since.
I really love the down to Earth, realistic feel of this movie considering the genre. There are lots of horror movies that are nothing but gore or jump scares. They use cheap tropes to get a scare out of someone, but that type of scare doesn't linger. But this movie? The fact that it took a realistic approach makes it scary as hell, especially when you first see it as a kid, because it has that feeling like it *could* happen and if it were to happen in present day then it'd be similar to this. It isn't any over the top scary movie where you have to basically turn your brain off so logical thinking won't ruin the fun. I may just have to go watch this again because it's been too long.
I had nightmares for weeks after watching this in the theaters in its release. I don't get scared easily, and I have to say this was one of the best horror films that grips you, and knowing that it was based on a young girl's life in Germany (look it up). I hate it that it was thrashed by some critics. They just don't get it.
This was one of the scariest movies ever - so disturbing and sad that i could never revisit it. You really feel for Emily and the unfairness of it all. Glad you reviewed it. 💐👏
In my opinion. This film is the greatest Exorcism film since the original Exorcist. Tom Wilkinson’s courtroom speech at the very end was so powerful. Just a fantastic movie. All great performances. 5 stars ⭐️
Brilliant analysis. And hit the nail on the head with that line you said "makes you feel like you're in the jury". Because I think that's exactly what the goal was of this film. The fear and doubt is what makes this compelling and ultimately, scary.
@retroFIX Gaming C'mon bro, let's not get overexcited, The Exorcist is still unmatched in its level of creepiness. This movie doesn't have a little girl asking a priest to rape her or raping herself with a crucifixion, or walking downstairs face up or turning her head 360 degrees.
@retroFIX Gaming It's not scary because we "find kids creepy", it's seeing a kid saying those things and acting that way, there's nothing creepier for me

Dude. I've been trying FOREVER to find that Stephen King miniseries you mention called Storm of the Century. I watched it when it first aired on TV when I was about 15 or so. And it has stuck in my mind ever since, and I forgot about it after all these years. Sometimes it pops back in my memory, and I tried looking for it, but I could never locate the name of the series or any other info. Thank you for finally letting me remember that series. I just started watching it right now after seeing this video lol.
Everything about this film works, the acting, the writing, the goddamn soundtrack, the pacing too. I watched this movie without looking too much into the reviews and solely based on my brother's opinion. He pointed out that during horror scenes there is limited soundtrack which makes it a lot scarier. I didn't even know this film was underrated.
I like the fact that they didn't add way to much CGI in this movie. That's one of the major issues with horror films today. Plus they have seemed to run out of new idea's for horror movies today as well.
I've watched this film several times and without question Jennifer Carpenter deserved an Oscar nod for this performance. The cinematography was out of this world. Check out the director's cut.
The faith versus facts/science is probably my favorite aspect of this flick. The horror is just a huge bonus as the players really all do a incredible job filling their rolls. To boot; this is based on real events, which makes it scarier. Loved this flick to pieces!

@@lukavojinovic7246 So you know about the actual case - how come you like this POS movie that spits on her grave by pretending this girl that was denied proper treatment and got tortured and starved to death by her insane parents and their priest was anything but their victim?
@@commanderkruge no one really knows what happened tho, I also don’t really know anyone with epilepsy to eat bugs and lick urine so
@@lukavojinovic7246 If you researched, then you knew she was schizophrenic too.
Jennifer’s commitment to her performance is just next level. She’s equally terrifying and sympathetic. It’s hard to find that balance of being scary while possessed, but vulnerable when she’s a promising young college student. That’s not an easy task at all but she nailed it.
Saw this movie as a teenager and was the first horror damn movie that made me lose my sleep...
Haven't seen again since.
Jennifer Carpenter scared the crap out of me when it came out. She's such talented and underrated actress.
Chris Stuckmann, this film is based on a real incident, just like The Exorcist.
@Lazy Fingers It's the audio that gets me. I've never been able to listen to all of it because it's terrifying.
Well... it’s not is it... as demons don’t exist
This movie messed me up so bad that even to this day I get freaked out if I wake up at 3am unprompted.
since that movie came out when i was 14 jennifer carpenter convinced me demons are real thanks jen 😂
Same!!! I watched this movie like 12 years ago and this is one particular movie that gives me chills to date if l ever wake up at 3.
Such an underrated horror movie. Loved it back then and love it now. Hopefully this review gives it more exposure
The scene at the stable was one the best horror scenes ever, that shit was scary af.
1 2 3 4 5 6!
When the BF finds her on the floor all twisted, that scene is burned into my brain.
When she contorts in church was Disturbing AF.
One of the most disturbing movies ever. It’s damn terrifying
This movie along with 28 Days Later scared the shit out of me when I was a kid
Before this, Scott Derrickson did Hellraiser: Inferno. How did this turn out like this?
there are scenes in this film that are legitimately terrifying
If you don't know this movie is based on real life incidents of a German girl Anneliese Michelle who underwent Catholic exorcism rites during the year before her death in 1976. Her exorcism sound recordings are available in TH-cam and are extremely scary (just like Emily Rose in this movie).
Exactly and there are some pictures of her too, she died so young
After watching the movie, I googled those images and audio. Total friggin nightmare fuel.
When I was 19 I worked as a projectionist at my local movie theater. This movie scared the crap out of me when I had to run it. Then walking the dark theater hallways to make sure everything was working okay and hearing all the screams coming from that theater. Yep I was terrified for the whole run of that movie ( I do love it though)

this is the one time I do not agree with rotten tomatoes lol
@@sonixxxxx23 ....... I'm just surprised you believe any of those scores. Maybe the audience side, sure
@@sonixxxxx23 the one time? Lol
Ever since Limitless, Jennifer Carpenter has always been a recognisable figure in my eyes.
@MasterOnion North Mmhm. 😋
@DevilKaz It’s always nice to see shows get a second chance at running!
@MasterOnion North She's all mine! Mine, I tell you! >_
Jennifer Carpenter has always been one of the more talented actors around... She goes all in on any role.
One of the only horror movies that has scared the shit out of me. I still feel anxious when I think about rewatching it.
I'd like to watch it again, but I'm hesitant for the same reason. Very creepy movie.
I have to second this...... want to, but don’t at the same time!
What?
Then you didn't watch RAW and MIST.
Watch both movie
Mist is ok....
THE SCENE IN THE BARN!! Oh my god that shit is DARK; in the best way possible.
Attack of the shaky cam!
I think it worked for the scene. At least, it did for me.
You should review “Grave Encounters” and “Grave Encounters 2”.
I thought the first one was great, the second one not so much
@@AuzzieArtyst I agree with you 1st one was very good but the 2nd one was bad.
Even better, he have to review Gonjiam Haunted Asylum. Personally, it's better than Grave Encounters.
What is the name that the case is based on. I would like to look it up
@@rozwynn2349 Anneliese Michel
This movie scared the hell out of me when I was younger, might have to rewatch.
My favorite line from the movie ," demons exist whether you believe in them or not."
Its honestly one of the best possession movies. Always loved this one. Its pretty unique in its story.
We need a hilariocity of Exorcist II: The Heretic
Horrible, utterly horrible, and fascinating
It's not funny
@@raam726 Yes it is, it's hilariously bad!
When I saw this film in the theater, the Witching Hour scenes left such a powerful impact on me, I'm still terrified as FUCK of 3 am. Those scenes are absolutely terrifying. Love LOVE that you chose this film, Chris!
We really need An American Werewolf in London review!
Yes! I love that movie.
80s horror movies were amazing.
YES!
YES!
And An american werewolf in Paris for hilariocrity
I'm really glad you shined some light on this movie, Chris. Not a lot of people have given it a chance, so hopefully they will now. I placed it on my list of the scariest movies of all time.
One of the better and more unique exorcism movies out there. The tree scene was really creepy. Even though it was not necessarily a dark and gore fest.
What do you mean by tree scene?
@@horrorpodcast0707 have you seen the movie?
@@DC-zi6se yes, many times. I’m not sure what scene you mean.
@@horrorpodcast0707 if you haven't seen the movie search EOER tree scene on YT. Although, you won't be scared that much cause it's in the middle of the movie.
Loving the 8th Halloween special chris! Can't wait to see the rest of the reviews you'll do this month! Keep up the good work dude!!!
First 'The Mothman Prophecies' and now this. Laura Linney is in so many underrated/overlooked horror movies that Chris talks about. 😅
Her name should have been a household name, like at least Kate Hudson or even Saundra Bullock.
Thanks for the great suggestions Chris! These are all going on my list to watch before Halloween!
Great film, the scene when the priest wakes up and sees that black hooded figured still gets to me. lol
I’ve seen it once and it is definitely a VERY strong horror film. Great acting, especially by Jennifer Carpenter.
I ALWAYS talk about Jennifer Carpenters performance in this movie. It’s chilling in a way not many are.
In my opinion. This film is the greatest Exorcism film since the original Exorcist. Tom Wilkinson’s courtroom speech at the very end was so powerful. Just a fantastic movie. All great performances. 5 stars ⭐️
We NEED an Exorcist III review, one of the most underrated horror films of all time!
Absolutely.
Brilliant analysis. And hit the nail on the head with that line you said "makes you feel like you're in the jury". Because I think that's exactly what the goal was of this film. The fear and doubt is what makes this compelling and ultimately, scary.
This is the best exorcism film. Sorry, " The Exorcist" fans.
@retroFIX Gaming I don't find the Exorcist scary either. Like at all. The only creepy part is when the face of Pazuzu flashes behind the mom.
@retroFIX Gaming It's not scary because we "find kids creepy", it's seeing a kid saying those things and acting that way, there's nothing creepier for me
This movie is more scary because it’s based on a true story.
Glad you reviewed this one. I've seen it so many times and no one I know has seen it. This movie needs more attention. Truly underrated and overlooked.
Boyfriend wakes up to her position is scary, truly start.
dude chris is killing this years halloween special, i’m working so much and taking care of an infant, so all i can really spare is the few minutes it takes to watch a stuckmann review, so this is my halloween this year. thanks chris!
Love this movie.. It's a courtroom drama disguised as a horror movie.
Jennifer Carpenter was so good that I can't see her as anyone else. Like "Hey, Emily Rose is in Dexter".
This movie truly freaked me the hell out, so underrated as a underdog masterpiece
I like the fact that they didn't add way to much CGI in this movie. That's one of the major issues with horror films today. Plus they have seemed to run out of new idea's for horror movies today as well.
I agree that this movie doesn’t get enough credit- it’s the only exorcism movie I like besides the Exorcist. Have a great Halloween everyone!!!👻 🎃
I've watched this film several times and without question Jennifer Carpenter deserved an Oscar nod for this performance. The cinematography was out of this world. Check out the director's cut.
This Halloween special should've been called The Haunting of Chris Stuckmann
I am so happy about that score. I've disagreed with critic reviews for years and years. Good on you Chris.
I remember going to see this when it came out (15 years ago wtf!) and that barn scene has never left me. "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6..."
The faith versus facts/science is probably my favorite aspect of this flick. The horror is just a huge bonus as the players really all do a incredible job filling their rolls.
To boot; this is based on real events, which makes it scarier. Loved this flick to pieces!
I'm jealous of Emily Rose's dexterity. I mean the way she could Arch her back........
You should have seen my ex when I used to eat her out
Steve Thomas Touché my man 👍🏼🤣
Henry Czerny is such an underrated actor
Loved him in Mission Impossible 1
Chris can you do a review for a Stephen king miniseries called “rose red” ? Please I would love to hear your take on it 🙃
Glad to see u reviewing one of the most underrated horror movies everrrrrr!
Unfortunately I watched this after watching Dexter and all I could see was possesed Debora Morgan which took me a bit out of it.
SO happy you reviewed this movie. Been wondering for a long time what you’d say about it. Excellent movie. Probably the first one to make me afraid to turn the lights out...or wake up at 3 a.m.!
I still can’t bring myself to watch this. Too scared lol
I cant watch the exorcist ever again! I think I could watch this again but not alone, it was scary af.
I think one of my favorite things about the film is how it tries to explain an exorcism /possession from a scientific perspective.
Chris how you say Colm's last name is "FEORE" without the "e" on the end. It's silent.
Also Henry Czerny (Cherny), like the composer.
Chris, my dude!! You finally reviewed it. Thanks!!!!!!
