I was aboard the "Vittorio Veneto" for 30 months and then another 18 months of the "Andrea Doria", in the years from 1978 to 1982, as a non-commissioned officer in charge of on-board computer systems (SADOC1). I had the honor of participating in the mission in Vietnam for the rescue of refugees, the so-called “boat people”, and in several other missions. They have been intense years of which I have a beautiful and nostalgic memory and I am truly saddened to see "my" ship demolished. For a sailor the first ship is like the first woman ... one never forgets.

I visited this ship in 1997 when it came to New York City. I was really very impressed by it and even got to go below decks. I'm really pissed off that it was scrapped. Such a nice ship and one that was irreplaceable. It should have been made into a museum ship no matter how much it would have cost. it would have been well worth it for prestige reasons and to inspire future generations of Italians to serve their country.

I remember very well the Vittorio Veneto and I saw it years ago once moored at the harbour of Livorno, quite an impressive and beautiful ship. I remember very well the Italians got furious, me too, with the captain that ran aground "our" beautiful ship "due to bad weather" off the port of Vlorë on 22 April 1997, I remember very well the comments flying and possibly the nicest word was "imbecille"/imbecile in English. Despite the official version many was thinking that he was too inexperienced mixed with sloppy handling. Good job 👍👍

Very nice video. I spent almost 3 years on board the VV towards the end of the 80s as a Ltjg helicopter pilot and FDO. With affection, I always address her as "my ship". She was a comfortable and spacious ship and from the warfare point of view, she was well armed, with every useful deck space filled with weapons, like all ships of the Italian tradition. We had a normal assignment of 5 AB212ASW helicopters and 14-16 pilots. It saddens me to know that she's goinig to be scuttled. I belive she has already met that fate.

Giuseppe Garibaldi is effectively the last Western European Cruiser even though she never operated as such she was designed for it, she still carries double torpedo tubes, 3 DARDO CIWS, 8 Anti Ship Missiles and has all the associated sensors to run them, her crew originally trained for surface and sub surface warfare as a frontline ship, only when Italy was allowed to operate fixed wing aircraft from ships did she take on the role of aircraft carrier.

Italy no longer has cruisers in service, the orizzonte class destroyers have replaced the andrea doria class. but now the navy has ordered a new class of ships to replace the luigi duran de la penne class destroyers. these new ships called ddx, will be real cruisers with an empty displacement of 11,000 tons. the first is expected to be launched in 2028, but the pandemic has slowed development. so I don't know if the times will be respected, but I strongly doubt it.

I mean however this type of cruisers would good for Europe, this class the Vittorio Veneto class too would be a decent starting point of a series from this type of cruisers of course we have to modernize it. This ship really captured my imagination. If we have 80 or 100 ships like Vittorio Veneto we would have such a great fire power.

The different naming of surface combatants is relative. Cruiser size ships are called Destroyers. Destroyer size ships are called Frigates. WW2 definitions no longer applies. The ultimate absurdities are the British light carriers called thru-deck cruisers and the Japanese light carriers called helicopter-destroyers. Additionally multiple navies have amphibious flattops capable of being light carriers. So there….

As far as tonnages are concerned, modern ships cannot be compared to old ones. when the vittorio veneto was launched, a frigate weighed about 2/2500 tons, a destroyer weighed from 3.5 to 4000 tons, today a bergamini class frigate weighs 6500 tons, more than the vittorio veneto, despite being much smaller in real musere. 145 while against the 180 of Vittorio Veneto. displacement is complicated nowadays. for example, the new offshore patrol vessels of the Italian navy called ppa class Paolo Thaon di Revel, are real frigates disguised as patrol vessels, with 144 meters in length and 6200 tons in the full version. th-cam.com/video/iLaUkizeKXg/w-d-xo.html
