on addition to what u have shown here, if u sandwich them between heavy objects as they cool they come out nearly papper thin. i do this so i can fit three or four in my wallet. it doesnt affect the burn time at all and ive never had them melt or deform because of heat. just thought i would throw that out here. great video
That is a good idea!
Dude, did you never go camping in New Mexico or Nevada, in the summer?
The other video I saw had a guy put blobs of Vaseline between two of the pads... 🤨🙄
@@toml.8210hes gone for a year now.
I just made a batch. Best fire starters that I have played with! Broke one in half and the cotton fuzz lit the first try with a single spark. I save empty BIC lighters and remove unnecessary parts for emergency strikers.
good vid, also if you add a 10% ratio of lamp oil to the candle wax your burn time will shoot up to about 10 min.
Uh, dood, Vaseline soaked cotton balls never expire. I filled up a Skoal can with them thirty years ago and they still work fine. Just used a half of one vasaball last week. Sparked right up.
add a sharpie and draw pumpkin faces on them... great hack
That is funny! lol and thank you!
buckeyeimaging you are funny
Great Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried - Proutklarton Incredible Match Plan (do a search on google)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for getting an understanding of how to survive in a disaster and make your own survival food minus the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my old buddy Taylor got cool success with it.
but use a wax pen
Melt Vaseline in with the candle wax and they work even better, and last forever if kept below the melting point! I can always find old candles to use, that saves on the use of new candles!
how much jelly do you use per chip?
@@alutious I use 1 13 oz jar for every 3 or 4 lbs of wax. It's not critical to have an exact ratio.
@@scanyoursector5731 have you tried it wood I haven't found one yet only wax wood..
I used this all last year camping and I just love them. I use two at a time just to get a little bigger flame and they are so cheap to make, big thanks for making this video! P.S., I plan on sharing this to others as I like these that much:)
they are pretty cool!
I like to pre-melt candle wax in the microwave too. If you are careful and go slowly, you can liquefy the wax as well.
If you put them on strips of wax paper to cool, you can cut them apart & fold over. Wax paper burns too.
Thank you for great video. I had cotton rounds for long time. Never used them.Just made some firestarters for my son.. He's been using plastic bags for years. I hope he really likes them. I think he'll love them.
I do the same with paper towels. Cut them to size I want for the container I need.
I can get 10 to 20 depending on the size, per paper towel.
My favorite fire starter by far now. Nice touch with the bright orange, though.
I also made some with cotton balls... cotton balls absorb so much wax, if you dip them completely, they end up hard as a rock and pretty much impossible to light with a ferro rod (I admit I use a lighter for those), but the FLAMES that come out of it.... MWAHAHAHA! For my new batch I just dipped the ends of the cotton balls, which sould make them usable with a ferro rod, but not 100% water proof. Will be testing later today.
Will need to try these out. Mine will be cheaper, steel cotton rounds from wife's makeup case, use the waste from wife's scented candles. All for free!
Doesn’t the steel scratch her face?
@@drewjohnson4673 🤣
Yep, that's the exact same way I make most of my firestarters. :) They work like a charm, even in humid and rainy conditions.
Love it! what a great Idea! Living in Florida I would probably have to separate them with wax paper so they don't melt together in the heat when carrying. Adds another option for fire. Surviving the hurricanes this summer has taught me that having our kits as user friendly and practical as possible for easy use is key and your ideas and videos have help do that. Keep up the great work Chris!!
Probably and Good Idea.
I have been doing this for 20 plus years except I use liquified PJ. I store them in snuff pucks. I get approximately 10 minutes burn from them. Years ago when I taught Hunter Education I always demonstrated how to use them with the students getting some hands on training utilizing a fero rod with them.
God bless!
Wrap each with foil and pop them in a Pringles can.
Cotton patches & candles from the dollar store and you've got it. Great idea!
Simple and effective solution for a DIY fire starter, liked it!
Thanks alot.... For the Money.. Hard to beat.
I have been using these for the past 8 years, they work great, work really well in wet weather, hurricanes, storms, make some, there fun.
Thanks. Altho' there's tons of fire starter ideas, this one is good because it is so flat, and thus takes up less space. I also like that it doesn't have volatile, flammables, like vaseline or even alchol
I like petroleum jelly mixed into the melted wax. If you put too much petroleum jelly the wax won't harden. So get the consistency right. Make mine just like this.
I add 10% paraffin lamp oil to the wax they burn longer and I store about 5 of them in a Dip can.
This is what I do as well! I find that they store without the wax crumbling or breaking in colder weather which is why I started mixing some p oil into my mix. Wrap 5 or six in aluminum foil and stuff them into every bag or kit you have!
great video, I like using dryer lint and wax
That is in my Life Hack video in my feed! Its a good one
I steel my wifes unused tampons!
@@albundy2580 lol
i must say this is the best fire starter i have seen. and will be doing this. thank you
I have some cotton balls and vaseline tinder i made up in 2013 packed in a rolled up zip lock bag they still fire up fine but i also have the ones like you have made in video only i dipped mine in melted petroleum jelly then into the wax bath great video melting to wax via the jars is excellent idea thanks !
Vaseline has no expiration date. It lasts forever. It's petroleum based.
Gasoline is petroleum based and it goes bad fairly quickly.
YOU JUST SAVED ME SOME MONEY, thanks for the video
Thank you for this video 👍now I going to make my own 👍
Could it contribute to causing a chimney fire like creosote?
As always, great vid. I love your content!
I soaked my cotton pads in nail polish remover and then ran each pad out leaving only the necessary amount! Works like a charm! Just an idea
Excellent idea
I just made these the other day. They are also my all time favorite firestarter and they burn a very long time.
Just wondering,,,,u can use an colored candle,,,
Can you add an additional fuel(lighter fluid) to the cotton pad before dipping it in the wax?
Dip them in tiki torch fluid before wax so they will still be bendable, and pick up a pair of dollar store tongs for $1 to save your leatherman.
Yeah "I'm discussing" that "mod" in the comments
I just tried these. Great Idea, they burn great when you get them lit, but there's no way you're lighting them with sparks with a ferro rod you have to use a lighter. Even though I tear them apart.
Your channel is epic I've updated and replace most the stuff in hunting/bushcraft/survival pack and managed it with quality gear lots based on your videos and minimalized gear
I know this is an old Video but I feel like I havnt seen a post from any of the survival people I used to watch. Great Video
Wow - very impressive. It sparked right up with a single hit to the ferro rod. TH-cam has an endless flood of videos featuring "suvivalists" who need 8 - Infinite number of strokes to achieve even a smouldering bit of fluff from the Survivalist Store. :D Congrats! You have hit a sweet spot. I'm seriously interested in using ferro rods now. (I've been using cheapo lighters. I've worried about them leaking.)
I just tested some Vaseline on a cotton ball that is probably 20 years old and it burned longer than wax. On a cotton ball. I do want to try this though
Just asking, why not using cotton balls instead of cotton rounds?? Which is much smaller in size than cotton rounds
what about cutting up old teeshirts into 2x2 squares and dipping them into the wax? just melted down a bunch of old candles and been filling little wax 2oz cups with dryer lint and wax. but this method seems to be alot easier and makes way more firestarters.
Nice simple tip and easy on the pocketbook & skills level.
Always the goal!
They will ignite more easily if you add a little kerosene to the wax before dipping.
thanks always good to have multiple types of fire starters
Ok..... maybe I missed it. Where & what are the round pads? please advise....
They are cotton pads that, I believe, women use to remove make-up and such. Most dollar stores will have them, same shelf as cotton balls and Q-tips.
You rock men I love your invention cool stuff
GREAT video
awesome!
Well hey check this out! I make some that burn for about fifteen minutes and they're about the size of a dice, easy to make and light and never expire. Good video. How do you pack them?
Show us your video and recipe bro
Very Cool! Looks like sweet potato chips! ;-)
Haha kind of!
Thanks for the video! I have a question. I saw you put a little water on it. Was that to soften the wax a little? Thank you in advance.
It’s just to show that it’s water resistant
what do you mean expire when you mentioned petroleum jelly?
Nicely done!
Very cool. Thanks for sharing this little fire starting hack. I'm going to have to visit my local Dollar Tree and give it a shot. :)
Pretty straight forward! It's a fun project
What I like the best about these is they are NOT messy they dont leave petroleum jelly on your fingers their biggest problem is if its too hot they can melt
So, why did you lay each round on a cookie sheet before dipping them??
These work great! Thanks for posting
what was the things you coved with wax made of ?
Cotton makeup remover pads.
HA!
EXCELLENT!!!
...My gf leaves those in the bathroom floor ...every month....
cool Ty i am going to try it
am I missing something? What are you using to dip in the wax?
Cool idea, thanks for sharing 👍
Absolutely
Awesome, liked and subscribed.
Thanks alot Welcome Aboard!
Awesome Video!
Thanks
Cool! What did you pour on it before you lit it? Thanks for sharing!
It looked like water to me. I think he was showing how water proof they are.
Dude. So great! Thanks
Very nice Chris
Thanks
Well, that unexpected. Creative
I’ve recently been using petroleum jelly and cotton balls but hate how messy they are. Gonna make some of this this weekend for sure.
Use triple Antibotic instead. Still messy but good for fires and first aid
Same thing sandwich the jelly between two pads and dip the cotton jelly sandwich in wax and preserves the whole thing super fire starters
Brilliant
Great video!
Thank you
wonderful, subbed!
Thank you. Means alot. Welcome aboard
thank you man
good day to you man
Would they fit in a pringles can?
I also prefer these over petroleum jelly and cotton as the petroleum jelly can get messy
What kind of wax are you using?
"Paraffin wax" and also "Crayola Crayon wax" burns the best.
Really? Crayola Crayon wax burns good? I need to try that. I have thousands.
Sweet thanks for the info
Absolutely
Thanks!
Fire chips are delicious
Do these really burn for 15 minutes?
i saw a video, where you dip them in lighter fluid before you put them in wax.
Wow . The black smoke must be over whelming. Wax is water water proof. There is a lot of room for improvement
how do you store them?
nice job. btw, petroleum jelly never expires.
That's what caught my ear. I didn't think it did either.
My zippo smiles
Storing them in a Pringle can would be perfect!! Just gotta waterproof the container somehow.
use the lays can, it is plastic, the chips are terrible but the can works lol
Waterproof the container? Seriously...? DIP IT IN WAX!! ...Lol ... but seriously though..
I have talked about petroleum jelly and cotton balls and use them because they work. These are cleaner and not messy and these could be loose in your pack with no problems. If petroleum jelly gets out of the bag it was in it can be hell to clean up inside your bag. Something to think about. The price is right.
Nice man I never thought of that I've water proofed my matches before but not that nice
Have you watched the 11 Life hacks Video? Chalk full of useful ideas.
DropForgedSurvival yeah but that wasn't in there right
+Toby Slaughter I did in fact waterproof matches
way cool!!!
I love them
Awesome
But do they have a nice pine scent???
More of a Wax Scent
Mix fire gel(gel candle wax), parafin or bees wax and some petrolium jelly.
Double boil as your doing and mix all 3. I use 25% petrolium jelly, 25% Fire Gel, and 50% Candle Wax(parafin or bees)
Those aren't aren't bad suggestions/ ideas at all
DropForgedSurvival this is better than fire starters i try whith my small stove from italian mre and one of those boil 1 liter of water
I didn't hear you say what the round white material is??
How long did they burn? not sure if I missed that or not. Just curious.
About 10min or so which is a really long time.
That is awesome. I'm a cub scout leader and this will be a great project to do with the boys. We are learning about camp fire safety and fire starters.
+David Walker oh absolutely. Check all my DIY and Life/ Survival Hacks I'll be doing. Some useful and easy tricks for campers, outdoors, families, and scouts.
Yeah I have been checking them out
+David Walker Awesome! I have loads of videos in the works
To the Dollar Tree!!
To the auto... Mobile!
DropForgedSurvival I went... and found a camping knife. it kinda looks like a Spyderco knife but serrated. Bought it for the hell of it.
Store those bad boys ima a pringles and you’re good to go
As a skateborader i know all about melting wax like if you know what im talking about grate vedio
