The First Girl to Win a Pro Freestyle Competition - How Kai Tanabe Became a Freestyle Champion

- Kai Tanabe is an 11 year old freestyle skateboarding superstar from Japan. She recently won the women's division of the world freestyle round-up. Shortly after, we got to see Kai beat the Japanese Freestyle champion - Yuzuki Kawasaki, in the a Japanese freestyle competition. Kai is now the first lady to win a professional freestyle contest. She is also one of the youngest champions in our history.

So true! We are at the Euro Freestyle championship today and the women’s division is huge
She's makes it looks so easy and have buckets of swag. Even when she doesn't land things perfectly she still makes it look smooth and like it was planned. Love that freestyle is having a bit of a revival. I grew up in the watching old VHS's of Rodney Mullen in the late 80's and love this modern take on freestyle a lot of Japanese skater seem to have.
She's awesome... it's wonderful to see that Freestyle is in such capable hands (or feet?) of these young ones after all these years. Freestyle is awesome part of skateboarding culture :)

wow, stunning and graceful and she doesn't have bruised shins. seems packaged perfectly for highest score possible. delicate rather than explosive. shows how lucky very young kids are that its all been invented, perfected, and handed down in a neat package after decades of struggle by the masters. what a gift.

Where are people learning freestyle skating from? Every time I see a young person doing this, I’m more blown away by how it’s like they are in the most popular skate discipline, than by how good they are.
They’re learning from us and so many great freestyle creators and educators on Instagram and TH-cam

So sick. I almost feel like skateboarding should start here, where you drill in all the technical aspects of skating and then adapt to street ala Rodney Mullen path.
That is what Andy Anderson did. Growing up in Canada he said he was forced to do freestyle in winter. you can see it in how he skates, he's constantly adding freestyle stuff in between street skating. it's almost like he's doing freestyle in the street and his board control is the best in the world probably

Rodney Mullen in 1986 have almost this same routine, only he was better . Neither the less she's good.
Sure Mullen is 1 of the best freestylers if not the best of the 80s, but thats the 80s, 37 years since a run nowhere near similar to this was done, freestylers are better now than ever and with people like Kai it's going to get even better. Stop sitting in the past with your "Rodney was better" stuff.
