    Great stuff. The 2.5 was my favorite as plenty of room for to splay and you can feel the terrain with feedback. My only issue was durability, as I run on pavement so the support would fade quickly. I'd always know when I needed a new pair of 2.5 when things would start hurting.

    • @jasparvowden
      @jasparvowden  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yeah I love the stretchy mesh on the upper of the 2.5s it's so comfortable. I still run in the 2.5s all these years later and have found them to be extremely durable. They've lost a bit of their bounce but still a very comfortable shoe to run in. I really hope they bring back a similar style shoe but not holding my breath

      @jasparvowden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they're such a great shoe! For some reason although they apparently have the same ego midsole as a lot of other Altra shoes, the 2.5s seem to have their own unique bounce and comfort to them. I really hope Altra stick to their original ethos and keep making great shoes like the 2.5. They seem to be veering off track slightly with some of their new shoes but here's hoping they stay true to their original philosophies! 🤞

    • @fnaust
      @fnaust ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fnaust yeah you're spot on, it definitely seems they're going that way. As long as they continue to make new shoes that stick with their original ethos and also make some more mainstream style shoes I don't have any issue with that but it would be sad to see them lose their way completely. I guess time will tell!

    Thank you for the great review Jaspar. I have the same feeling about the midsole in particular. I really love the Escalante 2.5 while the new Escalante 3 let me down. I also have the feeling that the midsole of the 3 is seriously worse than the 2.5. So the Altra development is rather worse or they have changed the manufacturer/supplier of the sole material ;) So I'll buy Escalante 2.5 while it lasts.

      Thanks mate! Yeah it's unfortunate that it's such a downgrade, I was so excited to try those shoes when I first bought them. Agree with everything you said. I have wide feet and the Escalante 2.5 is my favourite road shoe of all time. It really is the perfect shoe. As soon as i ran in the Escalante 3 I rushed online and bought the last four pairs of the 2.5 that I could find. I'm very lucky to still have two pairs NIB. It's no 2.5 but I bought the Rivera 1 cheap on a whim, disliked it initially, but came to really enjoy it after it broke in. I find it much more responsive and fun to run in than the Escalante 3, despite its slim footshape and increased stack..

    • @jasparvowden

      Yeah mate it really is! There's nothing overdone about it, it just fits the foot nicely, is super comfortable, great midsole, good ground feel, and has no intrusive technology to try and alter your gait cycle. I really hope Altra or another brand can make a shoe similar to it because I haven't been able to find anything that closely resembles it. I haven't tried the Rivera, was too hesitant because of the slim fit but I'm glad you've found a decent alternative. The only slim fit I wear atm is the Vanish Tempo or Carbon shoes but they're strictly for speed workouts or races, can't wear them too frequently or my feet get injured

Someone pls tell Altra guys to stick to their USP and not follow the herd. Provision 7 were the worst, so rigid, almost telling my feet how to land and take off. It's impossible to get a hold of the racers these days, it makes me wonder if they discontinued them so they can make a racer version of the 3. I run in FiveFingers too, but at over half marathon distances and racing I think Escalante racers would be perfect. Bought a pair of Racers, really liked them at first, but I noticed that the tongue is really annoying, the heel doesn't quite lock down nearly as good as some other Altra shoes, and unfortunately worst part, the shoe has quite an agressive curve starting at the toe box that teally pulls it inwards. For the life of me I could not spread my toes because the outside of my feet were stuck the the outside of the shoe. When you spread your toes your big toe doesn't really spread, it's the others that do, yet all of the room you need to spread your toes is on the other side of your big toe. @@jasparvowden I've heard good things about the tempos, but the only Altra shoes I've owned are the Solstice 2's and Racers, both of which are at 22mm stack height and far as I'm aware are the only shoes Altra currently sells that are that low and categories as low cushion, whereas the Tempos are high cushion with a 33mm stack height. @jasparvowden  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's a real shame! I love the 2.5s they struck such a good balance between feeling barefoot but also giving a really nice added cushioning and bounce. The escalante racer is still a great shoe that feels closer to the 2.5s than the 3s imo. I've heard some good things about the brand Topo however some of their shoes have added stability technology which aggravates my feet so I haven't tried them yet

      @@jasparvowden i bought the nr. 3 now because i could not find the 2.5 or the racer. Since my expectation was negative first i was positively surprised by the comfortable feel of the shoe. Did my first run today and there are two things on my mind. The people that complaint about the tongue and the mesh being to thin and sloppy clearly won and now on a warm day on a long run one has to worry not getting to hot in this new mesh. Too plushy and puffy for my taste but for 5k is was okay.
      The shoe really feels very different to the 2.5. For me it feels there is almost no foam between the foot and the street. Which i am not sure what to think of for now. It for sure gives a very different feedback than the 2.5. It feels a bit dead but i could kind of like that since after getting a new 2.5 it felt often like too soft or too much foam, because the old one would have lost some of the softness which i kind of liked. I will see! The sole is different and supports lateral forces better when running a curve. Maybe therefore the shoe feels different.
