Win10: Just type cmd in the address bar to open dos prompt @ current location.
nice one. thanks
What a legend, nice one!
works in almost all versions of modern windows, I think this was added in XP
TIL. Thank you kind Sir!
Uh, I have been an IT professional for 12 Years and I never knew this. Thanks, Mike!
Thank you, I wasn't too sure how to use iperf3 until came across your video. 😎👍
Life saver!! I had downloaded and isntalled via the GUI, and it was saying it couldn't find the .gll file (or something like that)... so this video resolved that! Thank you sir!!
Nice short explanation. Thanks!
Oh man lifesaver. Thanks dude!
Thanks man, i really needed this!!!
Thank you! This was very helpful.
Great video, very helpful. Thank you Rick.
Thanks a ton. I was really struggling to get the client side working. I was using too many client options.
Thank you sir!
Hi from Spain!
It's very usefull video. Thank you.
You're welcome! I love hearing from people all round the world.
Congratulations !! Thanks Rick !!
You bet!
You could have just wrote CMD inside of the folder after you're extracted and it will spawn a command prompt in that directory
dude... you left me wondering with the "370",,,, ;-) pausing and rewinding... ;-)) until I saw the 'correction'!!! ;-))) 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the vid Rick. Can you please do a video showing how iperf3 can be used in gns3 to test network speed, latency and jitter. Thanks
great video, thanks
Thanks Rick!
here of the day!
You better make video how to compile 3.7 version for windows.
Thanks!
Thank you
Helpful but it's should be better to put exe in a directory like "ip" in c:\ ,
so in commad prompt you only have to digit
"cd c:\ip"
and then execute
"iperf3.exe -c"
or "-s" for client or server side,
dont forget to insert the server ip after "-c"
Easier in the user\(username) cuz that's the default folder when CMD starts...no navigating then
Good one Rick..
Thanks
So I have dumb question. Now that I got my laptop to be a server to listen on port XXXX, how do I get it to stop?
I tried to check bandwidth from my laptop to network network-shared desktop and iperf3 give me "error - unable to connect server: Connection timed out"
or just write click copy the file path as text and paste it after cd
Thank yoiu!
You're welcome!
thak you

I get the error: unable to connect to server: connection refused, how do I solve it? I've turned off the firewall but it still doesn't work
Are you trying to run the server, client or both?
@@Rickmakes I'm running one server on one virtual machine (that works fine) and a client on another virtual machine. It's the client who can't connect but I solved that error by changing the IP address on the client (because they were both using the same) but now I have a new error "no route to host". Do you have any suggestions on how I could solve that?
And thank you for replying!
good guide but have to say peeps who will be running this will now how to isntall it, I would hope at lease :D
You'd be surprised. A lot of people look to software like iPerf to diagnose a problem even when they aren't computer savvy. That being said, learning computer stuff is how you become computer savvy.
Thanks very helpful video, you ref that it is running on you Synology NAS, is there a video for this?? if so ls share this. was it loaded via the packet centre
or cmd?
I have a video on setting it up on Docker on Synology. It should work on any of the NASes that run Docker. I'm guessing it won't work on the cheaper models. th-cam.com/video/OcLpV2JgsDg/w-d-xo.html
So I guess with iPerf you can also get to know what network cabling your house is using? (CAT5e or CAT6)
I don't know if you would notice a difference between cat 5e and cat 6 using gigabit ethernet. cat 6 is supposed to support 10 gigabit ethernet so if you have that you could test it. The easiest way to identify cable would be to pull a little out of the wall and look for the "cat 5e" or "cat 6" markings on it.
In ideal conditions, yes, ideal meaning nothing else can act as a bootleneck, the cable is long enough to matter (in the tens of meters) and you don't run the cable along with power lines. But a in a network there are many other factors, besides the cable, that can influence the performance. In a house, with reasonably good connectors, gigabit certified, gigabit switches and cards you can't measure by software any statistical relevant difference. A CAT6 UTP (unshielded twisted pair) running along 3m of power line will have clearly worse performance than a CAT5e UTP that only crosses that power line 2 times at 90°. There is dedicated hardware that can tell you the cable type, but if can afford that then you can afford 10 gigabit equipment, therefore CAT7 cable and the only reason to do that is to run a computer farm in your house.
As RickMakes said, the easiest way is to read the cable. Another visible difference is that most CAT6 cables have a PVC central separator in the form of the + sign between the pairs while CAT5e may not have that separator. Also STP (shielded) cables are another matter.
Even cat5e will do 10Gb for like 33m (100ft) or something...

Nice video
I have installed iperf3 on my Linux machine and on my windows machine. Used iperf3 on Linux as server and windows as client. Getting only 37Mbits/sec. My router is gigabit. What seems to be the problem??? Please help
If you have another computer, I would do tests with it to each of the computers. They could help isolate where the problem lies. You could also assign static ip addresses to the two computers and connect them directly to each other. If it is fast, then maybe the switch is the issue.
Can we do the ip address of google server as the server? Using iperf
As far as I know, Google doesn't operate a public iperf server. There are some public iperf servers although they can become overloaded. iperf.fr/iperf-servers.php You could also startup a Lightsail server on Amazon's AWS and install iperf on it. That could probably be done for free.
Trying this on an Asustor NAS but keep getting "Connection refused". Obviously I need to login somehow.
Check your server Firewall rules.
Thank you can i do this on a friend from me ? I mean to do this to him without he setup a client ? I do anything? Like he dont need to do anything
You need to have one computer be a server and the other be a client to use this.

C:\Users\user\Downloads>cd iperf-3.1.3-win64>dir
The system cannot find the path specified.
C:\Users\user\Downloads>
Did you unzip the folder?
You need to add the directory containing the command and the DLL to your path.
Which path?
Ok. So you download the zip file.
Unpack it.
Open the unpacked folder
Click the path to the folder above
erase the path
type "cmd"
push enter
Then type IP
push tab
when you see ipref.exe or something ending with exe.
you can use it just like on the video

Try adding the directory containing iperf3.exe and the DLL to the path. Then you will not have to move to the directory to execute the command. No one knows DOS anymore. (-_-). What about running iperf3 as a service on windows 10? I've tried it and I can't see it in services.
Is there a GUI for this software?
There might be but I'm not familiar with any specific GUI. If you want a graphical speed test, I would recommend OpenSpeedTest. I have a number of videos on this playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLErU2HjQZ_ZNBUQCqkstfe7_zAdt7b1_k.html You run the server software on one device and the client is a webpage so you can run it on any device with a web browser.
@@Rickmakes Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. I like iperf3, but sometimes a GUI tool can be more handy than a cli one.
