      Pretty sure in one lesson you said to stay positive and not let a previous bad shot or bad hole get to you. But here you were quite hard on yourself with sarcastic laughs and comments. Come on, get with your own program! BTW, mid 80s on a huge course you never played before is impressive to us!

      That's one of those shots where laughing is all you can do. Sometimes, you hit a shot that's just so bad, there's no sense thinking about what went wrong, or how to fix it, or how to avoid it. Just laugh about it, delete it from the memory bank, and move on.

    Just make you appreciate more how good those tour pros are, under the camera, with thousands of people watching, they can shoot in the 60s, with equally hard courses if not harder... As for Rick, couldn't chip, couldn't make one good putt, but still had the courage to post this video, not afraid of the shame of 85... Kudos!!!

    • @vroomgc
      @vroomgc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure about the 'harder golf courses' point. The distance and water and other trouble I saw would rank this right up there for the pros. However Ricks shots into the green and pitching and putting were not at a pro level , at least on that day. Thus he had a high score. Whats that old saying, "drive for show and putt for doe " . I would add in "and chip and putt for doe". I find that I can make an average round really good if my short game is bang on. However if I'm driving super well but my short game is not good my score will be very bad :(

  • @jamestown4867
    @jamestown4867 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This one hit me hard.
    I’m a 7 hc and last week shot a 92 at my home course where I average 80. Opened with a triple and was determined to birdie 3 of the next 8 holes. Shot 42, no birdies.
    Back nine starting to boil with determination, took a silly double.
    8 over through 10 holes.
    9:12 Guy’s thoughts woke me up. “If he continues with this mind set...”
    Rick, I feel you. You know you can make birdies but the more you push, the more mental mistakes you make and luck has forsaken you... the chip at 17... the lip out... the cart path...
    At least you shot an 86 at a tough new course. I was on my home course 13 over my handicap.
    I would rate my hot headedness at 6 on a 10 scale. I try to use an exercise that has helped. I think of my approach shot plugged under the lip of the bunker, such rotten luck, just one more yard, what did I do to deserve this? It’s one of the most aggravating situations in golf. I let myself completely feel the anger and torment. Next I imagine that approach shot flying just one yard further, careening off the sloping collar of the back of the trap and rolling 30 feet into the cup. Feel the joy, the pride, the accomplishment.
    Then I try to find the middle of those emotions. And carry on.
    I missed an uphill 3 footer on the opening hole today. Used this technique and shot 76. For a 7hc. it’s a gratifying score. Rick would still miss his goal by one.
    Great content.

    I don't ever play, watch or even care for golf but this past week I've been hooked on your content, think it's because it's not serious which makes it enjoyable.
    On a side note, it seems like this course was built on some sort of game by the director of JCB and then they told the workers to take every digger they own to just make hills everywhere. Probably makes it great to look at but doesn't look like an enjoyable round.

I watch your videos more than anything else these days and I credit you for getting me so obsessed with this game that I only picked up 7 months ago. Your tips have helped me break 100 and I feel breaking 90 right around the corner. Watching you duff a chip or miss a putt is oddly relieving in a way, reminds me that you’re still mortal and that I can’t be mad when those shots happen to me. Love the editing on these videos as well. Keep up the great work. Much appreciation from Texas.

I don't mean that in a bad way, but watching someone as good as Rick Shiels struggle makes all of us high handicappers connect so much better with him. I've been implementing Rick's tips and I have shaved my handicap (I keep track) from 28 last year to 23 so far this year. That's a rolling 7 round average. (Thanks Rick!) I LOVE the honesty of this video. He could have easily edited it so he shot his 75 or even 72 and shoot scratch. Nope, Rick decided to be honest, and show what an honest round of golf should be: FUN!

    Looks like my typical golf outing on a longish course!! Gives great perspective on how a longer course pressures you out of your comfort zone and throws your rhythm off!! I am not a long hitter, but when you feel like you have to hit it long for a comfortable approach, it really puts the pressure on!! It gives me great respect for exactly how good the pros really are when executing these on a daily basis!! Class as always Rick!!!

    I love that you show the highs and the lows. I'm new to golf, been going to the driving range for about 6 weeks, bought a cheap set of clubs and played by first round a couple of days ago. It was an ABSOLUTE disaster but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I made par on a par 3 just narrowly missing the birdie put after a great tee shot. Also nearly drained a 40 yard chip for it to come round the edge of the hole and back towards me.

    • @UhhhhhnooOOo00oO
      @UhhhhhnooOOo00oO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Soul-Taker It shows you that gold isn't an athletic sport. Rick can play it somewhat well and I've played with 90 year olds that are better. Fat guys all day long with cigars on the courses. Because the average golfer hots 100 balls before they play and stretches for an hour. It's hangover or tired, some jackasses are taking too long on the first tee, I can't hardly see straight from being tired, the sun is coming up in my eye and go hit the ball. I'd say 99.5% of golfers don't warm up and have little clue of the course they are playing. I usually hit a 300yd plus drive and over hit a wedge, get on and 2 putt the first green. About the 4th hole, I start to warm up. That's how hold should be played. Rick isn't on the tour and you aren't either. It's why I'd rather buy all the equipment and look great on the first tee. The one activity I do this in. It's so I feel terrific and comfortable. You aren't ever going to be close to the PGA tour, so your score doesn't matter. Just having fun does. My friend got up on my home course, decently difficult and shot a 59 the first time out. Par 72. That's a freak of nature. Hardly knew the course. I will never get that.
