thanks for the vid.. i have the other style of locking tuners on my other guitars and discovered these gotoh's were a little different.. Your video has enlightened me!! thanks bro
Thanks for this. I'm replacing the tuners on my Fender Squier and the posts are shorter. The hole for the strings is almost flush with the hex nut. Is that normal? I'm guessing that my headstock is thicker than other headstocks.
hmmmm. It's tough to say w/o looking at it, but no that doesn't sound normal. The hole should be above the hex nut. Most of my headstocks are ~ .5 inches. If yours is .55 you should be well w/ in the normal range. *Some* of the Gotoh locking tuners have an adjustable height. I've never used these, but it's possible you are running into this: g-gotoh.com/images/pdf/manual/SG-HAPM-Manual-En.pdf Maybe try asking on a forum like thegearpage where you can post pictures. You may not always get good advise, but people will try to help. :) Good luck!
3 years late but, any idea why the string wouldn't go thru the pin hole? It's like the string (5th) is too thick so unless the pin is completely loose, it won't go thru. If it goes thru, I cannot tighten it... sooooo frustrating!
On my oldest set, the pin holes are all the same size. On two of my later sets, the wound strings have a larger hole size. I wonder if two of the "caps" got mixed up on different pegs on yours. Can you look at the hole size and confirm that the smaller ones (if there are any) are all on the plain strings? Let's start there.
@@BenBreard wow thanks for answering so quickly! I'll try to explain better: as soon as I place the pin, there isn't enough space for the string to go through. And that is before attempting to screw the little pin. It's just weird. Could it have gotten damaged some how?
@@droidfan hmmm, so when the pin is "set" there should be nothing blocking the hole for the screen. Try unscrewing the top casing (the part that covers the pin) so it detaches. Then screw it back on only enough to catch the threads. The hole should be completely open allowing the string to easily feed through. That's the best step 2 I can think of.
@@BenBreard My friend, thanks for taking the time to answer! Well, I tried that and it just didn't work. I can't catch not even 1 thread if the string is through. I tell you, this is too weird and the 1st time it has happened (fortunate to own 2 AZs and never had an issue) I talked to my luthier and I have an appointment this Saturday. I will relay any info I get in case this happens to anyone else. Again, many thanks!!
@@droidfan good luck. Hopefully there's a quick fix. It sounds like the pin is too tall. I've heard that Gotoh made some that you can adjust the staggered height, but it's impossible to do much good in TH-cam comments. Good luck, and I'll be curious to know the fix.
Thinking about theses my Hipshots are doing the job but I play heavy strong fingers so ever now and again they detune slightly but mine are staggered also I'm gona reinstall the string tree on high e side they Wana give way with intense playing idk I think I shoulda got schallers all steel is made in China so spretzel is aluminum not steel I'd rather have German steel than south korean thanks for the tip on these best vid on
Hmmm. Hipshot makes top notch hardware. I guess it's worth a shot. I know a lot of people love Schaller hardware, but my last experience with their tuners was awful. It would be cool to hear which way you go and what the results are. mrguitar.net/blog/?p=581
@@BenBreard will do sir 3 sets of hipshot tuners so I'm gona switch to some gotoh non lockers for this squire I have next I'll post what it sounds like with the addon tuners I really feel these are gona be a step above hipshot thanks for reply 🤘🤘
It's a Fishman Powerbridge setup. This is the regular bridge without the acoustic pickup in it. If you search for that you can probably find a bridge, not sure about the individual saddles. It's a great bridge though.
@@elephantricity so the shafts for the wound strings have larger holes. Make sure you didn't mix up the top shaft from one of the higher, plain strings. That's the only thing I can think of without seeing it.
Check out this insanely tasteful solo on this Tom Anderson switch-a-roo! 👇bottom I have some new Gotahs “open box” but they aren’t labeled. Doesn’t Gotah intend for each tuner to be assigned to a certain string? Any ideas how to identify which for which🤷♂️ th-cam.com/video/tcvVY-8HV-k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=I4Y2VGdaQdQZ-8Qc
Man, that guy's awesome. Thanks for the link! The last set of these tuners I installed had three for the wrapped strings and three for the higher strings. Note that gotoh has a bunch of options for these, including some with adjustable posts. So I don't know what you have specifically. I would try to thread a low E string through them all before installing. It will probably either not fit in 3 of them or be really tight. Put those on the high strings and you'll be good to go!
The set on my anderson appears to be, but the other sets I have only have a subtle stagger to them. I think this is mainly due to the way the shrinking string diameter effects the height of the post once tightened. (I hope that makes sense)
Make another video trying to take the strings off. (It's overly time consuming and can be problematic) You'll understand why Ibanez no longer puts these on their guitars and why so many people replace them with the mgt7s.
Maybe I'll do that! I agree these aren't as fast to rip off as some others, but it's NEVER been a problem for me. I've been playing this guitar for two decades and probably 800ish gigs. This guitar has seen more new sets of strings than most. .....but your point is still valid. Most builders stopped using them for a number of reasons.
I always use a penny for removing the stubborn ones. I can understand why you don't like them. .......but man they are a huge improvement from the old Grover locking tuners that Anderson used to use.
I think most people feel that way - hence the thumb wheel locking tuners are pervasive. These are still great for me because my OCD doesn't understand when to stop tightening things. These stop tightening on their own. That's pretty slick for broken people like me. :) .....but I totally get why people hate them.
Thanks for posting this. It helped me decide to buy a set to replace the SG38s I have on my tele.

Happy to be your 48th subscriber! Just about to invest in a set for my trusty 80's Squier Strat...
Very nice. Just ordered for my Ibanez rg470 mij. Think I’ll order some for my other ones as well. Thanks 🤟🏼

Those are pretty sweet.
Can you explain how to lock those Kays?
They will lock automatically from the tension of the string. It's amazing.
Mine won't lock down and the top shaft is just floating when I tightened it.
Hmmmm. On the surface it sounds like the threads may not be catching, but it's hard to say without seeing it.
@@BenBreard Yeah the threads aren't catching. if I tightened the top shaft they catch.. however, by that point the string wont go through the post.
