- Turckheim is today a town with a rich history.
Its geographical location has given it a very special vocation and its history is intimately linked to the cultivation of the vine. It is a constancy that has gone through the centuries with periods of euphoria but also periods of disappointment and doubt.
Chosen as early as the 3rd century by the Romans, they probably planted the first vines there, perhaps even on the famous hill of Brand which dominates the town. The primitive habitat was located along a road passing south of the city. Various finds attest to this presence, such as this statuette representing Mercury and visible at the Unterlinden museum in Colmar.
The current Turckheim owes its origin to the Benedictine abbey of Munster. The monks probably spotted this place and established a colongère courtyard there to work the land and especially the vines.
This nascent community is mentioned for the first time in 743 under the name of “Thorenchoaime”. The development of the place, naturally linked to the exploitation of the vine, would be quite substantial over the centuries, otherwise the Emperor Henry VII would not have granted it the rank of free imperial city by a charter signed in Pisa in 1312.
It was therefore from 1313 that the construction of the city wall began, pierced by the three majestic towers still present today.
City hall
The building, in the 17th century style, was once the seat of the court of justice of the former imperial city. The stable and adjoining buildings disappeared around 1860; the room on the ground floor has long been used as a ballroom! During its restoration, two Gothic walls and a Romanesque wall were brought up to date. The old wrought iron banister has been replaced by a sandstone balustrade from Rouffach.
In TURCKHEIM, in the Land of Stars, from 25 November to 30 December (except 25/12), the elves will open the doors of their Christmas market to you. Throughout the Advent period, a small imaginary world will occupy the place of the Town Hall: a magical village, made up of original wooden houses and all different from each other, built by the little hands of the elves.
It is by going to the traditional Advent Calendar that you will now discover this magical decor dedicated to children. You will be able to appreciate the work of the local or regional craftsmen distributed in this village made up of about twenty houses, where the children will be able to have fun sharing their dreams with the elves, through the Puits des Vœux.
At the same time and at the same times, the Décapole and Brand rooms located under the Town Hall are transformed into Stewala de Wiehnacht, a real Christmas café.
Every evening from December 1 to 24 at 5 p.m., young and old will attend the opening of the shutters of the Calendar, orchestrated by the lamplighter, who will make you discover each day an image from the historical and religious heritage, rites and customs and legendary characters of our region.
