- This is an introductory video on indian sword known as 'Dhop' or 'firangi'. it was main weapon of the marathas in and after the reign of chattrapati shivaji maharaj, used by bith infantary and cavalary.

Glad to see an Indian channel talking about the blades imported from Solingen, Germany . Too many Indians are touchy about this subject. These were cheap (not necessarily lacking in quality) blades and Solingen was like Bangalore in terms of metal work so Indians outsourced blade making (importing). Keep up to the good work. Glad i discovered your channel.

Well It Was 2 way trade. Some European also bought Indian swords.
There is a reference from the "Bakhar" That Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ordered 7000 to 10,000 blades from Spain.
yes chhatrapati did modified the sword, he orders to make the blade almost 1foot longer to fight with tall pathan. Because marathas was short in height.

The place from Spain it was ordered is called Toledo. The town still has lot of sword making small factories

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj make these Firangi swords updated to Dhop swords by adding hemisphere disk and long nail attached with that disk and he added small mattress to hilt for swety hand get relief during war.before Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj era these Firangi sword's disk is less hemispherical and short nail attached to it.blade has same types all the time.

Indian basket sword is basically a maratha sword mostly seen in maratha artillery which was invented by Chhatrapati shivaji maharaj. This sword is also known as maratha sword.
First 2 painting is made in 18 century
Wahe Guru da Khalsa wahe guru di fateh.. awesome sword.. this one would be mostly used by cavalry.. because they need that slight curve for slashing and its different than firangi because as pointed curve below mooth.. this gives excellent balance while slashing.. one more thing the blade is mostly exported from spain.. the other type of dhoop is straight and atleast 3.5 to 4 feets long.. for foot soilders.. and mostly used for thrusting.. Marathas soilders average heightwere around 5.6 to 5.8 feets.. and relative long dhoop was used to give advantage over heighted mughal oponents who used relatively smaller 3 ft talwars.. definately tried tested and introduced my none other than Shivaji Maharaj.. Yes Mooth is either Karnataki which always had leather grips.. vs Maharashta mooth which is similiar but doesnt has leather shelding.

The sword created by shivaji maharaj to marathas with the help of portugues blade is from portugues and assembled in maharashtra. Dhop ia commonly longer than the commom indian swords the reason for this is to you can fight while keeping the distance from enemy.

Dhop ( धोप) was already in use at the time of chatrapati shivaji maharaj but maharaj modified the design of dhop and made dhop as a main sword to be used in war the change was made because of short height of Maratha warriors as compared to Mughals.

What is different between khanda and dhop , as we know indian sword have length of 3.5 m but Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj increase the length of that sword up 4 feet reduce weight 3 kg to 1 kg 400gm

When we fight with sword it brings hand shake or mig vibration in it so it could problem in fight after the invention it have been seen applying cootan bed between gard it help and alow more to hold sword and fight with it read fight history and it's time of fight you will see in it

This types of sword and gards have given more face to build swaraz and that was great invention for that priod

Sir , dhop and firangi are two different swords . Also the maratha sword id far different from one u have in hand . This one u have is for close quarters . Marathas have a different swords for battlefield. I also have spoken to a marathi sword maker in pune . If u need info do let me know . But the work ur doing is appreciated.

The dhop that you are holding is called a wakhari dhop, as it has a slight bend but not exaxtly as much as a Tegh/tegha. The dhop talwar chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had was a straight dhop
