When the league started David Clanachan said that there will be pro/rel. Of course it's impossible to have it with very few teams. They should have at least 16 clubs so that they can split to 8 teams Premier League and 8 teams Championship. This won't be soon. For a country like Canada it would be ideal to have 16 teams in each division. They could go as high as 20 teams in each division.
@@charlie7466 Your concerns are valid. Initially before the league started I remember vividly that they did not have any intention for play-offs. Now the play-offs are fact. Indeed, the only country in the Americas that follows the European system is Brazil. They have balanced schedule and no play-offs. As well, based on what I have heard so far from David Clanachan whilst he was Commissioner is the impression that there won't be pro/rel in between 2nd division (once established and probably called Canadian Championship) and 3rd division which is League 1 Ontario or the league in Quebec. It seems that CPL plans to yank some of the teams from that divisions if there is an ownership group and stadium, but not to provide them with path to go to Div. 2 and CanPL respectively based on merit alone. We will see what will happen in the next years.
I also really hope to see it, but his might be a decade away or more. Let's see this CPL first division up to 14-16 teams and doing really well, and then a Div 2 might be the next step. I personally can't wait however I'm now instead of seeing this happen very soon, see it as more "down the road" sign that the league's been doing well :)
@@ivanpetrov5185 you mentioned L1O and PLSQ (that's the name of the Quebec league). I just thought I'd point out that League 1 BC is planned to start this year as well! I really hope if/when CPL moves to pro/rel, that they establish a 2nd tier (and DON'T call it the "Championship" like they do in England. That's what the best team wins, not what the 2nd tier plays in. I have always hated that name.) that they don't do it by splitting up the CPL. It would be tough to go from, say, a 14 team CPL, then 2 new expansion teams and a split to make a 2nd division and now it is down to 8 teams. In that scenario you would have 6 teams relegated in one year, which is extreme, and the other 8 teams would go from playing 13 other teams down to playing only 7 other teams. I hope instead they do it by having willing teams from the div 3 leagues across the country promote up. It would be easier for L1O for example to go from 22 teams (the size it is now) to 18 teams, have PLSQ give a team or two, and L1BC give a team or two. That would be much smoother and a more organic way to do it. But of course, it remains to be seen if the league grows enough to ever get to that point, and if they do follow through on pro/rel if/when they get there. Here's hoping! I think it would be an exciting differentiator in a North American sports context, so it could work!
After a few seasons MLS replaced Doug Logan. Doug did yeoman’s work to get MLS started. Now MLS franchises are $400-500 million per. Some times change brings growth?
I'm in London, what do I do now??? Can I get a semi-season package to all of Forge, York and Windsor, or maybe just grant me exclusive rights, and I'll build a team here in London, Ontario too...
If there was a real pro/rel in Canada not only every town would have a team, but every village would have a team. This is how is it in whole Europe, Africa, Central and South America. I am sure your city will have a team as well sooner or later.
Good job! Not just this one, but everything you've done in the last 5 years. Thank you!
Well done sir - good luck with Windsor!
You've got me as a season seat holder. Excited for this announcement. I'd love to see a proper venue in the city.
Thanks for kicking this league off David and best of luck with Windsor. Looking forward to what's next!
Very interesting, would love to see a ton of teams in south Ontario (London, Kitchener, etc.)
Legend 💪 👏 👏 👏
Well, if he wants any advice on setting up a pop-up stadium built from shipping containers, I know someone in Halifax he could ask...
Hopefully Quebec becomes a priority with the change of commissioner
Future season ticket holder right here. Hoping for a great venue.
Has the league announced whether it’s going to have pro/rel when it expands?

@@ivanpetrov5185 I just really hope the league doesn’t go with the mls route pro/rel is so much better for building the sport

Great job getting CPL going-good luck in Windsor. Soccer in Canada is on the rise-all positive stuff and World Cup on the horizon-here we go..(repeat)

I would commit to 2 season seats.
