Laying out the New House. When my wife and I started building our first place, back in the 1990s, it became apparent as I worked on the blueprints that they didn't mean all that much to her. She couldn't visualize how the marks on paper were going to relate to the actual house. So, once the clearing in the woods was made and I had the plans set for the LOG House design, I told her to plan for a basket lunch out on the property. She brought the basket, I put a ladder in the truck and stopped at the store on the way to the now cleared building site. I purchased 10 pounds of baking flower and a flower sifter, which confused her even more. Then, on the raw land itself, I preceded to mark out all the rooms, the window and door openings and the the details right there on the ground, the way a baseball diamond gets chalked out for play. I did it in full scale size. The ladder was to get her to the hight of the window openings, so she could see the future view out of every window. This gave her a chance to re-think how the house was sited on the lot, the view orientation from every window and consider any last minute changes before the blueprints were submitted to the county and the foundation hole was dug. Nothing like a full size model to consider, before committing to such a big endeavor. Much easier/cheaper to change the paper then the construction.

A water tower? and a root cellar or a bunker. The house is going to be amazing with such nice views out the windows. She wants you to have a big garage so cars all fit! It will be so nice to have a place to work on them, out of the weather and space to move.
What is the snake situation near Edmonton? Is it too cold in winter for any to survive? Here, it's always a consideration (Eastern Browns and Tigers) and you always look where you're walking although mostly they make themselves very scarce. We have about 2 acres of lawns so the odd 'visitor' stands out before lead poisoning happens. The property looks very good and your setback from the road looks about right, certainly no less
I'm glad you survived the wasps Alex, cool property maybe I should come up and metal detect it for you! You're good cooks! While serving in Air Force in late 60's overseas in Iran my Father and I found an old hand made hatch in the ground of our back yard..it opened up into an old earthen wine cellar. We dropped a ladder and found two old hand made bottles that contained wine!
Love that property you got and I know it will be awesome once you get the house and garage built. Great job on the cooking. I never have a problem to come up with different meals. It is not often I have the same meal twice in a month. Mostly I try to cook on the weekends so I have enough to portion out over the week so no cooking after work just heat and eat.
I grew up in a region of the USA that had a good bit of snow in the Winter. One of your first purchases will be a snow blower with that long driveway. I am looking forward to seeing what you uncover on your new property and I also noticed that you were exploring in shorts and sandals. I always enjoy your videos.
The property had some purpose, the trees around it were taken care of at some time, the black plastic hose is not that old i think garden of sort and i bet you find nothing under the object with the bolt i think it was the foundation for something, everything points to the property having structures and being used, need to dig into it harder, thank for the vid and congrats\
that old wooden thing in the ground could be a septic tank. When we bought our old home in the country that's how our septic tank was set up and we replaced it with a new one.
The property looks good! I think the hatch will likely be some old plumbing thing… but its weird they had that with no records of structures on the property?

I'm only 7 minutes into the video and I want to tell Alex.... Put on some boots to walk in those areas!!!! Please!!!! My toes hurt just seeing this! ;)
It looks too me like there may have been animals like horses, or maybe cattle, on the property at one time. If you find a local genealogist amongst your fans, they should be able to trace the history of your property through records. I do it all the time in the U.S
Just after he unloads all of the moving boxes and stacks them, then gets a call to buy the contents of someone’s garage. He unloads that haul into his “big” new garage and realizes there’s no room for a car nor motorcycle. At this point, he expands the clearing in the rear of the property to start foundation work on his new “workshop/garage”. 😂😂🤣 All joking aside, I love the new property and I’m excited to see the progression of the build.
Really nice property. I like anything with woods on it. I bet your guy mapping out your property might recognize your underground hatch. You are rocking that tan. Stay safe.
Dear Alex, A pair of boots are in order. Please! You need to protect your feet. Area looks very interesting though. I’d definitely want to check it out myself. But safety first and you are right to be aware of the wasps and hornets
Maybe a garden, or a Still, as someone has suggested. Watching from a newly lockdown Auckland, New Zealand, Thursday morning here. Not used to this. But only a week so far. Such a cool property dudes. Can't wait for building.
Yay, it is finally happening. The beginning of the house build. I can’t wait to follow progress as the house appears on that gorgeous property. I can see it now, the Rolls Royce driving up to majestic gates flanked by those beautiful cypress trees, then down the tree lined driveway to the enormous garage. How exciting for you all. I am so happy that your hard work is making your dreams come true. And you are sharing it all with us - how lucky are we? Loved the Hello Fresh segment. I have a similar arrangement with Dinnerly which is a simpler version of Hello Fresh and they are delicious, too. Take care and stay safe and well. With love and best wishes from Down Under 😘💕🤗🇦🇺
Your hatch could be covering an old well or cistern from 50-80 years ago. Sometimes this was the way wells were converted and they had a well pump on top with a windmill to pump water up to use for animals, etc. The well there may have gone dry, and could be why you have the other structure in the woods.
I suspect the hornets nest could be in that wood pile ? If I was you I would deal with the hornets nest in winter . Your property is gorgeous love those birch trees . You could include a real fire place in your dream home . My parents built there dream home with a marble fireplace . I had a roommate whose father built a fireplace out of amethyst . Thank you for sharing .
Looks like a well-pumphouse and a cistern to hold the water. Gravity-fed running water is a thing for those going off-grid or those in the past. My great grandparents in southern Missouri had one and so did my great grandparents in Arkansas.
Congrats on finding a useful sponsor. I tried one of the companies that provide the ingredients that you have to put together, but I'm more of a three-minute-in-the-microwave kinda guy, so I settled on Freshly.
The same goes for electrical sockets! Make everything big. We have double plug sockets that incorporate double USB sockets here in the UK. I don’t know if you can get them in Canada, but they are really useful.
That’s right! When you start filling the outbuildings they’ll invariably be just a bit small! Or is it that one’s possessions grow to fill the space available!

Eww!
I agree the old way of making a septic system.
I am always cautious of snakes and am always recommending others do so! (Heebie jeebies)
The bolts and timber are modern. They where galvanized.
Galvanizing has Been used for at least 150 years but the bolts are hex shaped to your point .
You have lots of gooseberries in the woods! I hear they make a good pie. We used Hello Fresh for couple of years. I can attest to their yumminess. They are really good.
Also make good jam or jelly.
Alex, I think that's a hunting stand. Near the water, waiting for animals to come for a drink.
no its a pump stand
I agree, it has fallen over.
If you have dead hollow trees with woodpeckers, please consider leaving them standing. Woodpeckers ard becoming rare because people now tend to cut dead trees immediately instead of leaving them.
agreed, I also leave my *zombie* trees standing for that reason alone. So long as they aren't in danger of falling on my house, they can stay standing for as long as they like :-)
My dog heard the doorbell and went crazy barking. She’s still looking for whoever rang the bell lol.
😂😂😂
My cat hears Alex’s voice and comes running. She curls up in my lap while I watch the show! 😻😻
What a gorgeous property. A drone sure would come in handy. Would be a much safer way to explore the land & having an aerial view of the build would be awesome.
A well, or septic tank. Good they covered it securely.
Right. That was the responsible thing to do.
Dear Curiosity inc. Alex A.
👍👌👏 CONGRATS, CONGRATS, CONGRATS!!! That's such a fantastic property. What a great purchase.
Best regards, luck and health to all of you.
Of Course Alex wears sandles in the bush.
I was thinking the same thing!😁
Should we start a GoFundMe for buying Alexander a stock of Wellies??? 😁
@@murielchaguidanian Steel toes and soles would be better.
SMH... Some one needs some boots .
He is such the city boy to wear sandals. I'm guessing no snakes in Canada? 😎
Thank you for showing the food coming in the box. Everyone seems to show them preparing & cooking But it’s nice to see how it comes. I’m thinking of ordering from them
Abigail is growing up so fast! Looking just like her beautiful Mom Melissa! Food looked so delish! And no plastic bags! 👍👍🥠😊
A few years ago, when I stopped being a productive member of society, one of my goals was to get back to cooking more frequently. I used Hello Fresh to get back in the habit. I haven't been using them lately, but I did save the recipe cards. I made the Cherry Balsamic Pork Chops last night.
I would inspect that as the wood might rot and maybe covers a cellar or an old well so make sure what is in an fill it in if you deem it unsafe
Lovely piece of property! Congrats to you & your family. Very exciting for you (and us)....😊 look forward to future progress on your new home. I love witnessing really good things happening in the lives of really good people.
A water tower? and a root cellar or a bunker. The house is going to be amazing with such nice views out the windows. She wants you to have a big garage so cars all fit! It will be so nice to have a place to work on them, out of the weather and space to move.
Another favorite video including family. Can't wait to see what you dig up on the property.
I never wear open toe sandles in bush like that.
I wonder if the structure is an old deer stand? Good spot near the stream.
I thought that, but more likely a stand for a cistern. The top part was probably scrapped a long time ago so only the wooden base is left.
If that hatch says "Dharma Initiative" anywhere on it .... RUN! 🤣🤣🤣
Omg, you are killing me, I have to know what is under that wood hatch thing !!!! I am so curious lol
Congratulations. Beautiful property a lot to do in the future..have a great time
So….walking through the woods in sandals & shorts?? Might need to “gear up” a bit Alexander. 😬
Alex… many bees, wasps and stinging things tend to have underground nests… be careful when you’re walking around out there!
that old wooden thing in the ground could be a septic tank. When we bought our old home in the country that's how our septic tank was set up and we replaced it with a new one.
Nice property!!
Hey, Alexander thanks for the video, enjoyed seeing you cook. Later!!!
next video "I found a cash of gold buried by a hermit on my new property"
🤞🤞
Thinking the same thing! Or some survival bunker! Can’t wait to see 😋
The property looks good! I think the hatch will likely be some old plumbing thing… but its weird they had that with no records of structures on the property?
How did Abigail somehow skip an awkward phase!? ☺️ adorable!
Wow those beautiful trees!! That suspicious board look like a bunker or storm shelter!! I can't wait to find out!
It would be exciting to see some people with metal detectors explore that property!!!!
Hi Alex what a beautiful place you have brought to live ,and your house will be amazing, your a lovely husband an father ,an you work so hard to get where you are today you deserve everything you wish for in life sending lv Ann uk xx
" a garage with a house on it" well that's the dream!!!
We have a top similar to that on our family farm. It used to have a hand pump for a shallow well. Nice piece of land.
OMG...u gotta get Josh..his brother...Hans and go find out what's in your back yard... can't wait to see what y'all find 😊
Alexander I am excited that soon you will start building.....please have someone with you when you unbolt the boards......super exciting
Suggestion - Have the builders pull that up with their heavy equipment when they come out to dig your foundation.
My dad did that . Fouñd an old well. Hed drove over it and the old wood on top let go. So he filled it in with rocks from bulldozing and dirt.
Your quality from Hello Fresh is amazing. Glad you’re experience is so good 😊. Mine not so much, 6 months with them and I tossed out bad vegetables, bought vegetables fresh from local grocery. Customer service was incredible, they were very helpful land tried to remedy the issue with the distribution in my area. The company as a whole is something I would go with again in a different state not in central Midwest. Thank you for sharing Alex.
I do it all the time in the U.S
when Alexander said, 'What was he doing there' reminded me of that Tom Waits song, 'What is he doing in there'. lol.
Oh- too funny! I'm watching and eating my Hello Fresh Zuchini & Tomato Flatbreads- yes, it's easy to make and yummy! 🍽
Lovely spot for a home. Trees , birds, nice and private. Awesome.
How many months after the move in before Alexander outgrows his garage?
I say 2.
Stay safe.
Looks like an old “grow”. That’s maybe why the neighbors are closed mouthed. 😊
My first thought.
@@pinkerbot A marijuana plot. They were often set up near woods by a road and a water source.
I was thinking there might have been some moonshine making there in the past.
Dear Alex, A pair of boots are in order. Please! You need to protect your feet. Area looks very interesting though. I’d definitely want to check it out myself. But safety first and you are right to be aware of the wasps and hornets
You all know he wont listen. He didnt wear his mask like he should and he wont wear boots.
Water tower and "bridge" is like aquaduct to transport water to somewhere.
But where I wonder
Maybe a garden, or a Still, as someone has suggested. Watching from a newly lockdown Auckland, New Zealand, Thursday morning here. Not used to this. But only a week so far. Such a cool property dudes. Can't wait for building.
Oh nice at least at your new place you can work on more car restorations and actually have a place to keep them!
You are so not a country boy! 😆 Step one for tromping through the woods is proper clothing! That includes shoes! Mystery hatch! 😃 Yes please!!
Pants long selves shirt. Sneakers and bug spray. Never go in the woods with out it!!!
Congrats on finding a useful sponsor. I tried one of the companies that provide the ingredients that you have to put together, but I'm more of a three-minute-in-the-microwave kinda guy, so I settled on Freshly.
Good luck Alex watch out for wasps.
Definitely peaked my interest in Hello Fresh. Your property is awesome! Love the trees.
no matter how big your garage, build it twice what you want in size.
How cool that is! Can't wait to see that episode! And all that wood! Fireplace and raised beds!
Alex, thanks for showing your property. It was nice to have Melissa help with the outline. And So Very SPECIAL you and Abigail cooked together ❤. Three videos of your three children each doing something interesting with Dad. May you always have a peaceful heart and soaring spirit. And may you always share it with all of us . . .
Our hello fresh in UK is not frozen, but we love it and often take it with us in our caravan. Very few disappointing menus.
Congratulations! I think this was the 1st time the word FARTSY has been used in a Hello Fresh commercial. Ha!
Haha!
Oh my gosh, be careful that’s not an abandoned well. Got to admit, sure is a lovely little piece of property. Before you all know it it’ll be your piece of heaven away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Great content ,congrats on that property looks fantastic. Hate to rain on the party. Hello fresh seems to be a bit over packaged not great for the reduce, reuse ,recycle ( in that order) plan. I hate to think how many people signed up for that service. Just as bad as that curig coffee thing and bottled water.
All of Hello Fresh's packaging is biodegradable/recyclable.
That is a lot of packaging. Too bad they probably have a lot of subcribers . Most recycling doesn't really get recycled. definitely try to reduce first. Alex's meal actually had small amount of packaged diced onions ,I mean really...
@@aprilkurtz1589 every house hold should do their part to not bring in all that packaging. Too many are taking the easy way with convenience.
@@bradyfolk7259 Yes I saw that little package too, among all those others headed for the land fill. Lets not kid ourselves that they are going to be recycled that is a big myth.
You really feel strong about packaging ha ha.
So happy for your family 😍 looking forward to seeing whats under the wood in the ground 😳
