Sitting here building antennas , and watching you! Now that’s something kinda special.
Haha nice.
I’ve heard the CQDX guy yell at another person on the air! It’s funny you recorded it! Priceless!!
Nice to see the X5105 again. That new firmware really does improve the radio. I've never had any luck with the CW decoder on mine either which is odd seeing how good the one on the G90 is... There are quite a few extended menus in there if you long press on the various menu buttons - Compressor ratios etc.
I have an X5105 coming tomorrow. I'm going to save this video. Very timely video (for me) !!!!!
Where did you buy it from? I've been looking for a few weeks and can't anybody selling them anymore.
@@glevideo Radioddity has them. $599 shipped, from the US, it took less than a week to get and came with the latest firmware (V3.0.0, Nov 26 2019, 16:18:50).
Qcx from QRP-labs has a pretty flawless decoder when setup right. As long as sender is capable of sending properly
19:40 “When all else fails you hit your enemy with it.” Hilarious Josh!
Hah, thanks!
You need to match the speed being sent on the rig.
I'm going to try and update mine to the latest firmware my radio keeps going into TX split if i take it off TX split it comes back on again when i keyup the mic
I only got the blue led when I pushed on the serial data plug and held it. It keeps failing. Their instructions don’t mention hitting the spacebar-just select the file and send. It looks like a bad connection at the jack. I don’t suppose there is a way to restore after an erase. I guess I keep trying or open it up and look for the jack’s traces and wire it temporarily. The port is labeled com on mine not civ. I tried again and thankfully it worked when I held the 1/8 plug in. Thanks
Not able to get more out of the CW decoding... The app on my phone isnt perfect, but does work better though... Now a tutorial on digital modes, please!
I wanting to buy a wrap radio, this is at the top of the list since I’m not willing to buy the costly kx2. Thinking this will be much easier to pack out over my 891 sitting in a bag.
A major desire is the ability to translate CW, thinking this will be helpful in my training. I was wondering if this will also translate my keying into the radio on a dummy load? Thank you I appreciate your videos. Dave Kd9obp
Thanks for taking the trouble to post your video. For me this upgrade underwhelms. The big new 'bauble' is the CW decode which I find, like you did, just doesn't work very well at all. When writing this upgrade they overlooked their existing CTCSS and forgot to include it which means you are now locked out of 50Mhz repeaters you could access with the earlier software version. DSP-FLT L-CUT and H-CUT don't allow you to narrow down enough for optimal digital work (old version was better). I strongly suspect that the AGC function has a mind of it's own and starts to do strange things to your signal without warning. The DIGI graph display - when you rotate the frequency wheel you don't really know what is going on - what is the up arrow actually signifying, is it the dial frequency ? What exactly is the scale on the graph ? Try driving left or right to match the peak to the cursor - doesn't really work. Similarly the SRM graph feature is a bit of a mystery. Where is the frequency wrt the arrow head cursor ? How do you drive to the signal peak ? Why does it keep reverting to CW mode when running this feature ? My conclusion is that when you dig deep into this it is a sloppy code release that was a long time coming but has been poorly thought through and badly tested. Furthermore there is zero documentary explanation of what the new features are supposed to do. Shame because I like this little radio but after a few months struggling with it I will be reverting to the earlier release - this one is a step backwards. Give it a good thrashing yourself and see what you think.
You did a great job commenting on this version. Thanks for providing your input.
Josh would you consider doing a video on how to find /replace internal battery on the x5105 since we can't buy overseas ty 7 3
Have you ever used the Abbree Antenna on the X5105 and used it as a handy talky?
It likely won't work as the ABBREE antennas are tuned for 2 meters and 70 CMs. At most 6 meters or 10 meters could work with the tuner.
Does this radio have spurious emissions issues like a lot of the BaoFengs do?
Negative
How do you get the radio to display current version? Can it do that on it’s screen at boot?
I have heard there is an issue with having the radio fry from a power supply disconnect while turned on. Is this true? Also can it be powered and charged from a normal 13.8 volt wall wort?
Hi Josh. I hope you got your problem fixed from the other day. I tried to give you another perspective on it, but you moved your beam to the north and I was then on the side or back side of it. Good luck this weekend. 73 Clark KG7LOI. BTY nice video on explaining the update. I just watched bridgecom's update for the 878 and like always confused.
Indeed. It was rfi. Five wraps through a toroid and we’re g2g
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Good to hear Josh. So I'd this antenna prone to RFI?
In the 11m lane, someone managed to open the station. and how did you do it. Thanks 73!
haw to unlock this radio for CB band? no information in internet .Just x90.
Hello, I would like to ask what X5105 version of firmware are you using ?, Thank you
Josh, have you had any issues with audio reports of the radio being copy, somewhat like a picket-fence effect, after the firmware upgrade? I upgraded and now I'm getting bad audio reports back. I've been posting on the FB group with some recommendations but I've not been able to fix it yet. I'd be curious to see what your received audio sounds like on SSB after the upgrade.
📫 QUESTION 🙋♂️❓❓❓ Can you update the firmware with an Apple 🍎 iPad Pro❓ Thanks 73. KV5P. Great 👍 Videos
Been looking for a QRP rig since I take my general tomorrow, I've got it down between the X5105, KX2, or KX3 which do you prefer?
Who has the X5105? its been out of stock everywhere so long i thought it was out of production.
@@forgetyourlife I heard they are working on a new version. On the xiegu facebook page
The kx3 has a smoking hot receiver. The KX2 is a great radio as well. 5105, is a good radio as well. Kx3, 15w. KX2, 12w. 5105, 5w.
I have a x5105, the answer to the question is how much money you are willing to spend. If you the money I would get a yeasu ft-891, but that’s my 2¢
I had x5105 but it drove me crazy with menues and ergonomics, beside the receiver was quite noisy. I switched to kx2 and yes it is much more money but to me it is worth it. Everything is easy and accessibe. But I sold x5105 around a year ago and firmware could solve some of the problems I had.
I understand that this radio has a great antenna tuner, so is it possible to just attach the radio to my rain gutters/leaders without any additional hardware, and be able to TX/RX?
Thank you!
Maybe, depends on the length of gutter. You might need a counterpoise though.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse I live in a HOA community which has buildings known as “quads”, because in each building there are four homes. So, I believe that I’ll probably have enough “length”, but if not, how should I figure the length of the counterpoise (or does that matter)?
Thanks for your responses!
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Josh, how would I determine if I needed a counterpoise or not, and if I need one, how should I determine it's length?
Many thanks!
Help.. it is totally different and when I pressed the 2 volume buttons it started writing the flash memory and now it doesn't boot up. With the cable connected I cannot do anything. The only I have is waiting connection on the xiegu screen.
Solution came here! cold sweat I had: www.radioddity.com/blogs/all/how-to-update-xiegu-x5105-firmware-2021-latest-guidance
I don’t know. It’s never not worked when I followed the instructions to the word.
How do you change keyer speed on the 5105? Thanks KG7CQG
The SWR meter is also my favorite part of my Xiegu G90! Great video! KD5QZG
Me too!
Is there a 11 meters mod for the x5105 ? I want a rig that will do 11 meters so I can still talk with friends on cb , a kinda all in one unit.
Trying to setup a 6m repeater which requires a PL tone. this used to live in the system menu (#21 and #22) but this release of the firmware seems to have removed it. Do you know if its located somewhere else?
Hey, Josh! Where did you get the dongle to update the radio? Thx & 73 de KI4BSW
It came in the box.
do this for the g90
What is the release date on v3b8?
tks.. works fine.. best 73 stay safe - f5nhj
tx in am and fm mode is bad and tx in fm mode is 7 khz down
Did the CW decode work on the earlier version firmware?
No. It was a new feature for this major firmware update.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Well, it's being discontinued (Or has been) anyway....
What has? The x5105?
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Apparently. Spoke to a dealer in the UK, and they never got one. Not to mention the HUGE disparity in pricing with the 'MFJ' sourced variant considerably more expensive than source from anyone else. Incidentally, I was tempted to get this as CW decode would be hand for my aging ears, and I can't find anyone who has ever got it working.
I like the 'book' style format of the X5105, Elecraft KX2 & KX3, especially with the front firing speaker. I have an FT817 and am considering getting the old Icom IC-7200 With the handles (It's not as fancy as the 7300, but it's A LOT LESS FRAGILE.) I think the 7200 is a 'forgotten classic)
Have you figured out how to send a message memory in CW? The information on the new menus is somewhat sparse on that subject
On this firmware version push the PTT button to send a message.
Swweeeeet new firmware?? Awwww that's not new firmware , I want a update that will do something , my big black dongle quit wrkn n took off with neighbors wife had to get me the blue on too..
Haha haha. When I was editing that video I was thinking, “will people get the wrong idea with this one?” Oh man.
Mann that guy ain't right heheh
I don't see any advantage to this upgrade.....Now, if Xiegu were to fix the CW Decode Function that I already paid for.....THEN I would be a lot happier......
I LIKE the radio, but I do feel shortchanged with the functionaliaty of the digital/CW.....The CW trainer/decoder is a joke.
Frankly, I don't understand why the Xiegu people are not reaching out to the TH-cam reviewers in support of their products. But......They are MIA's.........
TBH, I think they moved on to the G90, which is getting alot of favorable reviews now.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse
I THINK.....They are just not very interested in building a stronger customer following.
