We honor Sarah Chen with her short song, performed live at a 1986 concert in Malaysia, for breaking cultural and linguistic barriers. Starting as a child singer at age 8, Sarah Chen showed an early interest in Western music. She performed in clubs in multiple languages, including Mandarin, English, and Taiwanese. One of her earliest albums was an English cover of 70s pop music. When she signed with the international label EMI in 1983, Sarah Chen embraced diverse musical genres and styles, incorporating Western and Eastern influences and boldly performing many social norm-breaking English songs (see her 1983 album “The Right to Sing”). Her music was popular in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia, countries experiencing significant social, cultural, and political changes in the 1980s.
Sarah Chen sang in Mandarin, English (four albums), Taiwanese, Cantonese, and Japanese. Though she wasn’t fluent in speaking some of these languages (e.g., Cantonese), her articulation in songs was remarkably accurate, showing her linguistic talent and dedication. Although Chen did not break into the English-language market (nor did her peers), she paved the way for multicultural integration. Her music played an important role in breaking linguistic and cultural barriers, bridging divides between nations and people - a feat achieved at a time when connecting across borders was much more challenging.
