  • Powderham Castle is a fortified manor house situated within the parish and former manor of Powderham, within the former hundred of Exminster, Devon, about 6 miles south of the city of Exeter and 1⁄4 mile north-east of the village of Kenton, where the main public entrance gates are located. It is a Grade I listed building. The park and gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. It is situated on flat, formerly marshy ground on the west bank of the River Exe estuary where it is joined by its tributary the River Kenn. On the opposite side of the Exe is the small village of Lympstone. The castle was expanded and altered extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries, most notably by James Wyatt in the 1790s. The castle remains the seat of the Courtenay family, Earls of Devon.

A wonderful overview of Powderham Castle. During March, 1974, when I was staying at a "woodsman's" cottage in the area & was out walking, enjoying the countryside, I was drawn by this beautiful castle & wandered onto the property out of curiosity. Well, the gate was wide open & with no one to tell me to vacate, I couldn't resist. I was busy taking pictures as I walked down the stony road leading up to it, when I heard a "oy, oy", coming from further down the road. I soon found out that it was Lord Devon & his dogs coming towards me. He quite rightly enquired as to what I was "doing on his property". After explaining myself & adding that I was on holiday from South Africa & had until recently being staying at Riversmeet House, courtesy of Lady Sebright, he became more friendly with me & even invited me in for tea. He then gave me a wonderful overview of the castle, including some of its history. Lord Devon also filled me in about Oliver Cromwell's intrusion into the area. After a nice chat & brief "tour|" of the downstairs area of the castle, Lord Devon bade me a fond farewell & asked me to pass his greetings onto Lady Sebright, which I gleefully did, once back at Riversmeet House. Where upon she curtly told me not to visit Powderham again. She added that there had been a feud between Lord Devon & her family, from "who knows how long ago".... Aaah those Brits & their endless feuds. Anyway, I took back some lovely memories of the "visit", which I still enjoy recalling, as you can see by this post & from the pictures I took on that day, including one of a very dapper Lord Devon & his dogs ! I wish the present Lord of the Castle, much success with the wonderful work he is doing to refurbish & protect this wonderful place. How enriched life becomes by these wonderful & unexpected experiences.

This is fabulous. My 11th Great Grandmother was Anne Courtenay. she married Gilbert Holcombe (line goes back to 1099) and their son Thomas Holcombe, my 10th great grandfather, left for America 1630 and helped form Plymouth Mass USA and Founded Windsor Conn USA. I have traced the Courtenay and Holcombe lines to 420. (some farther) I am direct descendant of William the Conqueror, Rollo, Egbert, Alfred the Great, The Baldwins, and so many more. ITs fascinating to me. Researching all the women in the lines and figuring out where my strength comes from. The Holcomb's just kept going west and discovering the Wild West of America. My maternal grandmother was the last direct holcomb name in her line, her brother's line still has males. I hope to visit Powderham Castle as my 10GG Anne was born there, and I want to research the rest. But I find it fascinating that a girl raised in the wild west of America is descendant to this many royal lines and families. Blows my mind. The women in all the lines are so magnificent and some of the most infamous in history, I always wondered my strength came from, and its this long history of strong powerful women.

Out of interest, I’ve traced my forefather Renauld (or Reginald) Courtenay’s ancestry to Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne.

I've been trying to find information on the parents Walter Yorke who was Lord Mayor of Exeter in the 1400's. You would think that his parentage would be easy to find but I've gotten nowhere. :(
