This is a brilliant video; especially the section on the "who is this for"/"three types of users". I have a Q2 I have borrowed for 2 weeks I have been using and may buy one and on the fence but this helped me a lot. And yes, I want auto-focus although it is terrible on the Q2. I am a Type 1 shooter. BTW living in Vietnam looks amazing.
I think that describes me. I currently shoot Canon and Olympus and I'm considering selling both systems to pick this up. The problem is I'm not a professional photographer and my photos aren't even all that great so I've never made a dime on my photos. I love photography at the same time and have a blast doing it. I prefer taking 1 body and 1 lens out, I have a 17mm on MFT that gets 95% of the use. It's hard to justify the price but it might be all I need. Also... I love Leica pictures. There's magic in that system.
LOVE this review. The difference between your video and the hundreds of others out there on YT is the segment where you talk about who this camera is for. You really hit the nail on the head and I have decided to pull the trigger and. purchase a Q2. Best quote ever - "You shoot for you".
The reason I bought one is exactly the reason you mentioned in the video. My friend let me borrow his Q2 for a day. And since then I couldn’t stop thinking about it for two weeks and got one myself.
Hey Justin. Thanks for the great review. I have a Q2, SL2 and SL2S. I shoot commercially and also doco work but my hobby and pleasure is shooting bands and gigs. The Q2 is the best camera I have ever owned for this! It's fast and the auto focus is really snappy and shooting at night indoors in low light at concerts is just a real joy with this small beast of a camera! Not to mention the weather sealing is great when the concert goers decide to spill their drinks all over you as you push past them to get to the prime shooting spots!
I would love to see Leica do another version of this camera with a native 35mm lens that enables one to usefully crop in to 50mm or 75mm without much of an IQ penalty. The high megapixel count is like having a Tri-Elmar lens built into the sensor. And totally agree with you about Leica adding an SL style focusing joystick on the back. Much easier than contorting one's thumb down to the D-Pad. It will be interesting to see what the Q3 has in store.
Been contemplating this camera for quite some time now and this was the best breakdown on the camera and it’s ideal shooter. Great video and great editing. Thank you!
As a one camera, one lens kinda guy, shooting a M10M with a 35 Lux, funny how a good video about a good camera makes you want something you know you don't need! So here I am looking at Q2M used prices while watching this... Thanks Justin :)
Great overview Justin. I like the way you go in depth about the shooting experience more than specs. On my side, it has replaced my beloved Fujifilm X100V as my main daily driver. I literally bring it everywhere I go and even have it on my nightstand in case the light is good when I wake up ;-) I like to say that I invested in a Summilux lens that came with a nice Leica sensor. It completes the “holy trinity” of my M10 and M6. No more need to upgrade anymore. Just did a video about this. Cheers!
I bought the Q2 because for rainy days, it's the perfect alternative to an M. It is also great if you want to shoot something like an Indian Holi festival or in a dusty area. The manual focus is smooth as silk, as you would expect from a Leica lens, and the focus peaking gets the job done, though I am not a fan of EVF itself. The auto focus disappoints in lower light situations, but it's livable. The frame lines for the crop modes are ludicrous but I guess to an M user, it can be rationalized. The video is perfectly ok, but where it really falls down is external audio connections, as in there isn't any, which makes it a no go for real serious work. The macro feature is something that grows on you and it produces a very shallow depth of field. The color rendering in the files is pretty superb, though in low light, at night time, the higher ISOs are not the best compared to other cameras. It's definitely last on the list of cameras I take out, as I prefer shooting with my M10-R/M's but under the right conditions it's exactly what you need.
The Leica Q2 was my 2nd Leica. The Leica M3 was my 1st. I was looking for a light travel camera that gives quality images w/o the need to carry a bag full of stuff. This camera fit the bill and I love it.
Bob Dawson from Bangkok and I have had the Q2 for about 18 months. Worst issue is the lense cap is useless and is an obstruction, especially as the felt wore off fast. Otherwise, I have enjoyed using it. Sometimes it slips from still to movie. Not sure why. Some social media has rejected pics as they have too many pixels. I enjoy using the camera whenever and wherever. This is definitely the camera for me.
Hello in 2024! Would you still recommend the q2 in this day and age? I’m sick of waiting for an updated Fuji Xpro4 and I prefer the focal length of the q2 over an X100VI (not that I can find one anyways!)
I'm the analogue photographer you mentioned. I shoot mostly with a Leica M3 & Mamiya RB67 Pro SD. I occasionally need digital cameras for work and for my video jobs. Been really wanting the Q2 Monochrom as my main digital camera. The price is a big barrier to entry though. Maybe some day.

Justin, you are on top form, pulling no punches, just telling it as it is. Perfect presentation of the whole, Leica thing. Must look you up when next in Hanoi.
I appreciate that Tad, it was pretty long but i wanted to cover exactly how I see it and was thinking about who might like this camera. It's a beauty of a camera overall.
Hey Justin, great video. Question in your personal opinion, and you were looking at the SL2s and the Q2, but seeing how a Q3 might be coming out sooner than later, would you grab the SL2s now and then grab the Q2/Q2M when the 3 comes out?
Tough to answer without knowing you more. They are completely different cameras to me ,if you honestly need video capabilities get the S but I also find most people think they need video but they don’t. Or is you’re doing professional work the SL2 system is also better as well as you have more versatility w lenses. If you want an all in one personal camera for street photography and documentary work then the Q series will suit you better.
@@AskMOTT thanks for the $0.02! I want to grab an hour session and talk shop and personal projects. Maybe some gear and what not before I try/trade in my GFX system. When I purchase the hour how do we set the schedule?
Hi ~ really enjoyed the video and was interested about your views as I have a Q2 and love it. I had to sell a kidney but it was worth it! I think you nailed it as I am no1 as I have owned the superb canon D5 plus the great lenses that are legendary but found that I wasn’t taking them out with me because it was so cumbersome! I then went for the Fuji film xt4 which I love - but have found even that’s being left in the Toy Story Cupboard unless I need the telephoto ability. I love the unobtrusive ability to stroll around on urban social areas and catching great human interaction without attracting attention and getting incredible quality portrait images. This camera does it for me so we’ll - thanks again and keep it up - Richard from London
Perhaps there`s a fourth type, the guy who never could afford or would consider spending 15.000,00€ on a M10 and any ASPH Summilux and has the oportunity to own a great Leica system for 1/3 of the cost. And i`m so glad I did.
I've been shooting with the Q2 for a few months now. Because my preferred focal length is 35mm, it took me a while to get the hang of the Q2...but only in terms of framing. I love how the camera handles otherwise. Personally, I enjoy having somewhat "limited" features. I have several Nikon bodies, including the D850 and a wide assortment of lenses as well as a Fujifilm X-T4, which, by the way, is a joy to use. However, I don't use 80 to 90 percent of the features they load into most high-end modern cameras. They just get in the way of good storytelling.
thank you for taking the time and post this video. as a Nikon shooter, I find a lot of interest on the Leica system and I find this video very useful. I would add another reason to go for a Q2- those, like me who want to try the Leica ecosystem and can't effort the more expensive options.
I’m an old film guy. Hasselblad 500c/m, Nikon F2, Leica M6. You nailed it, I’m definitely your analog user #3 looking for a small dose of the digital experience. Mix in a dash of user #1’s desire to just have a grab-and-go-all-in-one digital solution and I’m seriously looking at the Q2. Great video, thanks.
I miss mine so much. Got stolen last week. Luckily insurance covered it. Going to go a slightly different direction (more video focused) but could see myself picking one up again. ❤️
Ahh nightmare got stolen. I sold mine a few months ago got the SL2S and use a 35mm voigtlander is cool. But think was the wrong decision, but done now so that’s that.
Brilliant review. Great job putting yourself in the preferred consumer’s shoes. I love my M10p and my gorgeous M glass but the Q2 would be great for family vacations.
Thrilled to find your channel, and appreciate your perspective on gear simplicity. Many moons ago, I had an M6 and a couple lenses for travel and street photography. Been considering the Q2 as a way to get back into Leica…and after your video, I believe it would the Q would be a good choice. Thanks!
Great video! I’m in number TWO category 😂. My focal length of choice was 50mm, and I have a ton of Canon equipment for studio work. But this little camera is taking over…I never thought 28mm would be interesting…. But I was wrong. I’ve been doing great portraits with this camera. You are on point with your comments about the Q2. Now I want to only use the Leica for all jobs. Fun and paid… obviously I can’t, but I wish I could. 🤦🏻♂️
☺You explained me. I'm that first Photographer you talked about. I'm not into all that gear just a spear the moment type of photographer. I think this is the camera for me and will be going out to purchase it. Thanks liked the video.
Can the Leica M satisfy those first 2 types of photographers though? I'm torn between buying a Q and a M for those specific purposes. The non-interchangeable lens of the Q is kinda a big turn-off for me idk
Love my Q2, well done! On 10 day vacation now, with Q2 and M10P, and film side, I have V Bessa R4A and Nikon FA….. and to go crazy digital fun at beach, Nikon Z6ii….. all fit in one bag. Film cameras have one color, one bw. Nice part, M lenses work on film and M10, Nikon and Voigtlander Nikon lenses on Nikons. Went to outdoor car show, grabbed the Q2 and the Bessa. Had a blast. Black and white foggy no sun day, bw film. Thank you.
I fall in the first category...But I admit that somehow I prefer the Q, unlucky the weather sealing, living in the north of Europe, it's a must for me.
I got a Q2 and I thought I would be a Fan Ho or at least Alan Schaller but I was very wrong and I was taking crappy cliches like before with a point-and-shoot camera. Look like 95% of Leica owners do the same, taking meaningless images and explain how good they are. Before getting that expensive toy I should upgrade my vision so should other Leica fans do too. Sorry fans but talk are cheap and the images should do the talking. Do not forget, "A picture is worth a thousand words". I know, I know, I'm an idiot who likes images, not what it was taken with.
Really depends on what for. If I could only have one that's easy, the Q2. if I need a less expensive back up camera to compliment my M10 then the Ricoh.
Heya Justin! So maybe my snarky comment about other ‘backup cameras’ tickled a nerve, haha, but the Q2 is simply the best in the game and then some… It’s saved my ass many times, including on a shoot where an embarrassing fail on my part with a major system camera that went south, even after my weeks of preparation. With 5 minutes to go and the producer breathing down my neck, i pulled out my Q2 and just winged it with a little help from the studio crew on the lighting. The results were stunning and unexpected, really blew me away. One shot became my first ever published online by Leica, and several others from that brief remainder of a challenging session have been since. I’ve since moved to the Q2M, and it goes with me everywhere, even as a daily carry when I don’t have my M gear in tow, and always with my SL2S (same battery makes it a no-brainer.). The weather sealing and insane lens (yes - even autofocus and macro features) just make it even more of an extension of kit, rather than a backup…. Nice review, my friend.
I think the tag "backup" does not necessarily means to "lesser"; and I'm also really curious about what happened to you? No need to name brands, just intrigued by what was it that failed. Congrats on your published photograph, btw!
A brand that isn’t Leica, medium format gear. It apparently was firmware that may have been corrupted, as far we can tell. I almost tossed a $150,000 camera/lens into the pool in front of the models, crew, etc…. But my Q2 saved the day and anger from turning into a very expensive shoot.
Of course Justin! I’m “gearing up” for our work soon! As in getting my life and work together in the studio again. It’s my first week as an empty nester so I’m minding to the till and dumb real work…
This video just dropped around 1 week after I got a second hand Q which I haven't had the time to test outside because... lockdown but the camera feels dense, everything clicks confidently in place, balances nicely. Now... I'm having a really hard time because someone is offering me his used M10 for the price of a brand new Q2 that's really hard to pass. I don't do photography profesionally and it's a big expense but I do appreaciate craftsmanship. what to do? hahaha
Oh, interesting situation, I'd get the M10 but just factor in how you like to shoot and what you like to shoot. If you feel good go minimalist go w the M10.
@@AskMOTT I currently have a DSLR with a couple of zooms and a couple of primes but it's pretty big and very chunky to be lugging around in a city that can be a bit hostile in some places that's why I don't take it out as often as I would like... so minimalism is what I'm looking for, yet my wallet is looking at me like saying "Really, mate?"
Nice review ! Question here for all Q2 owners coming from Q1. Didn’t you feel a bit disappointed by the raw colours compared to the Q1 ? And did you find a way to get it closer to what the Q1 was producing ? ( slightly more lively colours and les brown/green tint ) thanks
Almost nobody mentioning this bit it is an issue... today I tried Q2 and it seemed to me that colours are a bit flat and not even that vivid as in real life... I was about to buy it but then stopped... I don't know but I prefer a bit colourful life
After a full year I can reassure you that it can produce beautiful colors indeed . It is just the raw files that are a bit flatter and “darker “ ( maybe the extra DR) . But the raw actually reacts better to post processing . Just a touch of colour saturation and a touch of curve can totally bring the files to life in a natural way . I also feel that the blacks in particular of the q2 are actually more beautiful that in q1 .
Re: 5:06 I’m still watching Leica Q and Q2 videos, 6 or so years after the original release date of the Q, and still GAS’ing hard over this camera. To those who think that other cameras pack ‘better’ features, or being better value, I say no. Because, is there anyone here still wanting a 5D Mk3 over any of the new mirrorless stuff? Didn’t think so. These cameras have proven to be able to be somewhat timeless. At least in electronics terms.
Hi Justin congrats on your Wotancraft affiliate relationship. I’ll use your link, but wanted to know if you think the new "Pilot" Travel Bag 10L would hold my SL2-S with 24-90? It’s hard to tell from their pictures. Do you recommend the new Pilot bag for an SL2S/Q2 kit or something else from the Wotancraft catalog?
I see the Q2 as an expensive niche camera that has a top tier lens, which is its strongest quality (Autofocus, Microcontrast/rendering, Macro) God, I love that lens. I used to own a Q2 and prefer to have the option to change glass. Niche things like the Q2 makes me reach for a vintage 35 if I want the analog experience. A camera like the Sony A7r2 with the right lens is a better option in terms of versatility and cost, not nearly as cool tho. I'd get the new or (old) Ricoh if I was playing the street/EDC game.
Just got a new Leica Q2 and LOVE IT! However, the Face Detection is almost unusable.... It just don't work!! Even the cheapest phones have better Face detection than the 5K Leica....it's a shame.
That’s a bummer to hear about the face detection. I don’t use that stuff much , only for video when I’m going my TH-cam episodes but Sony seems to have that tech figured out well.
@@vermontmike9800 *Any Fuji body with any prime lens would do so. much more than this Leica stupidity Q or whichever. Its sort of a mind washing Leica stupidity* .

First things first, i like your videos! For the rest now, i am trying hard to get in "Leica lover's shoes" but... I just can't! We are talking about photography and we are living in year 2021, so we are capable to make images looking identical from any camera down to MFT sensors. Therefore, what defines the quality and the value of a camera consists of other aspects such as ergonomics, lenses and extra features, things that help us to do our job easier and better. And now, you (and other Leica users) are trying to present a 5500$ camera, with no interchangeable lenses, no articulated screen, no phase detection AF, not even a hand grip(!!!) as the "best" tool for the job. I understand perfectly that affection to industrial design and that mechanical feeling, i have used Leica before, though i was never an owner, but as camera the Q2 (and even the M10) is insufficient in many ways. There are other choices that shears the same design language and are more feature proof: X100V with better AF and film simulation for 1/5th of the price. Canon M6 mkII with way better AF, tilting screen and way cheaper with interchangeable lenses. Still, there's one thing Q2 has better: is a FF camera and with high megapixel count. And the problem is there are no other choices that shares the same design AND have full frame sensor. With that said les summing up: it's a matter of choice. Are you willing to pay that money for a design? For me its a no. I can pay 5500$ for a Canon R5 plus one of the best L series 28, or 35 or 50mm or whatever it suits my style, having better ergonomics, awesome build quality, class leading AF capabilities (and MF if I want) and a modern FF sensor. Again, that's my style, your mileage (obviously) vary and that's respectable.
For me, it isnt even the high MP count. It's the entire AF-MF implementation plus the distance scale. Nobody else does that. The closest thing would be a Fuji with the old 23mm f/1.4. But that isn't a 28, which I prefer. The GR is another, but MF might as well not exist. Snap focus does great in emulating distance markings, but the Q's implementation is far more elegant. The X100V, which I bought and sold, isn't even a competitor for me. It's purely an AF-only camera. MF is terrible.
@@WestVillage-vv3hg if you talking about integrated lens models l, yes, i totally agree. But are better value AF/MF options if you consider to put a good prime on them.
@@forneverarrow Very few AF primes have good manual focus feel. Even fewer have an on-lens distance scale. If you only care about AF, sure, there are better value options. But a big part of the selling point of the Q is the AF-MF implementation and the distance scale.

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Roy.
Oh no Lio, what a bummer, I’m so sorry.
Hope you have insurance.
Ahh nightmare got stolen.
I sold mine a few months ago got the SL2S and use a 35mm voigtlander is cool. But think was the wrong decision, but done now so that’s that.
How do you insure you’re camera I need to do this. State Farm or something?
Brilliant review. Great job putting yourself in the preferred consumer’s shoes. I love my M10p and my gorgeous M glass but the Q2 would be great for family vacations.
Thank you Ryan , I appreciate you taking the time to comment :).
"People associate macro with insects and flowers and insects on flowers" - haha 100% spot on.
Thrilled to find your channel, and appreciate your perspective on gear simplicity. Many moons ago, I had an M6 and a couple lenses for travel and street photography. Been considering the Q2 as a way to get back into Leica…and after your video, I believe it would the Q would be a good choice. Thanks!
I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment Thom, thank you.
Love the practical review as always thanks.
Thanks for watching :)
☺You explained me. I'm that first Photographer you talked about. I'm not into all that gear just a spear the moment type of photographer. I think this is the camera for me and will be going out to purchase it. Thanks liked the video.
Thanks for watching Stanley and I hope you’re happy with your purchase.
I‘m type 1 and also type 3 photographer,My Q2 goes everywhere with me,great video!
Thank you Yishi :) love that you take your camera w you everywhere .
A very nice camera . If it had a 35mm lens I’d be all over .
Get one :)
Fair enough Matteo :).
Very interesting, informative, and objective review. It would have been nice if you had posted some photos that you took with the camera.
I wish too, I was in lockdown when I had it though :(.
@@AskMOTT That is unfortunate. Thanks for replying.
Which one would u choose Ricoh GR3 or Q2?
First off congrats on the published photo, it's a great feeling. Thanks for watching as always Vadim, I'm waiting for our session together :).
Of course Justin! I’m “gearing up” for our work soon! As in getting my life and work together in the studio again. It’s my first week as an empty nester so I’m minding to the till and dumb real work…
@@vadimhsu5114 Looking forward to it :).
Anxiously waiting for my second leica. Had use QP earlier and upgarding to Q2..love the form factor and focal length combined with macro capability.
How much did it cost here in India
Enjoyed your review, honest and to the point as always.
Thank you Byron.
Hi Justin what type of strap is that i really looking for one for my Q2. (Great Review) Love mine

(Ohh) To find a bet-ter day 🎶
Wish they made a Q3 with a 50mm lens. A 50 is just how I see.
I am new to photography and was going to rent one of these to try out. We are going to be staying on the beach do you think I need any ND filters?
Only if you’re shoot video.
What's the side by side of a 50mm crop vs 50mm prime compression?
I don’t actually know , sorry.
I don't do photography profesionally and it's a big expense but I do appreaciate craftsmanship. what to do? hahaha
Buy it. That was my decision when I pulled the trigger on a Q-P and SL2 combo. No regrets whatsoever.
Design for me is my beloved Fuji xpro 2
I can see that , people only have good things to say about that camera l.
Re: 5:06
I’m still watching Leica Q and Q2 videos, 6 or so years after the original release date of the Q, and still GAS’ing hard over this camera.
Close your eyes and have jerry Seinfeld tell you a about Leica Q2.
I love Seinfeld so I'll take that as a compliment.
Justin, is that bearded guy logo you or Pavarotti?
I've always assumed it was you but today, I noticed that neck scarf - so Pavarotti.
Ha ha it’s both of us :)
I used to be a big scarf guy, I’ve since evolving into a cuticular hat guy.
do you know why is not possible to set longer exposure than 8" with iso 1600?
I love your flow man lol.
I appreciate that :)
Video starts at 3:28
I love your expectations of the Leica haters before you even start, ha ha!
Have to be ready for them :)
but what about after 7 days?
great channel, can you do more with the q2
How do you see the Leica Q2?
I see the Q2 as an expensive niche camera that has a top tier lens, which is its strongest quality (Autofocus, Microcontrast/rendering, Macro) God, I love that lens. I used to own a Q2 and prefer to have the option to change glass. Niche things like the Q2 makes me reach for a vintage 35 if I want the analog experience. A camera like the Sony A7r2 with the right lens is a better option in terms of versatility and cost, not nearly as cool tho. I'd get the new or (old) Ricoh if I was playing the street/EDC game.
Batman and Robin duo in my SL2 and Q-P are incredible tools. Both fun and effective for personal and professional use.
I want it with a 35mm.. YESTERDAY..
Me too.
28mm is too wide for me even for cropping. I shoot with a 50mm and crop a lot with that. If they did a 35mm or 40mm I'd buy it.
Nailed it. I do want my Q2 to inherit the grid focus patch from the SL2 though.
Thanks Cheung :)
Great video. I’ve watched lots of Leica videos and still can’t understand why a $5500 camera doesn’t have interchangeable lenses.
porque el lente que tiene vale 5500 la camara es un adicional!!

@@AskMOTT For what it's worth, I'm interested in human beings and passion and your personal take. I can get camera porn and sample pictures elsewhere. Keep up the great work.
