Trevor Jacob’s plane crash story looks like it has come to an end… maybe. This mess immediately generated a lot of controversy but as it later turned out, Jacob’s decision to crash that poor plane deliberately, was NOT what he got in MOST trouble for. And despite his plea agreement AND his sentencing, it is not 100% clear that his trouble is really over.
    Stay tuned!

This guy buzzed neighborhoods in Lincoln Ca years ago. So low to the ground you could read the tail number even at night. We're talking feet above homes not hundreds of feet. We reported him to the FAA years before this crash video but nothing became of our reports. I'm so happy to hear that will never happen again. He was an absolute menace and an embarrassment to our country.

Wow that's not cool. That's how Randy Rhoads died. Idiot pilot thinking he's in a Spitfire and it 1944. It was only a matter of time. I'm happy it ended like this and not with your house on fire or one of your neighbour's. Because he obviously wasn't a good pilot, so it's pretty likely he would have messed that up and slammed into a chimney or telephone pole... of course a pilot qualified to fly like that, would never do this without permission outside of an airshow or some military exercise. And obviously Trevor wasn't going to be invited to something like that or would have made it in the air force... people like that piss me off badly. Similar to rich kids speedibg at night and slamming their Ferrari (with top of the line airbags) into some ancient family sedan full of people that explodes instantly, while the rich kid walks away with a twisted ankle. We had those in my country. They would race at night and occasionally hit a cyclist or destroy a family. So they came up with a law that makes speeding tickets proportional to your net worth as a percentage (if you exceed the speed limit massively, not 20 kph over. Like 260 kph in 30 kph zone). So I may get a 50€ for going 5 over while a wealthy guy going 150 over might get a fine that 100 grand haha. Guess what, no more Ferraris racing in the street at night. Occasionally you read an article "Driver fined half a million". Get a good chuckle from me. Usually accompanied by a picture of a fancy Italian or German car.

The Forrest Service would absolutely be bound by this plea and sentence agreement if it's accepted by the court, as it is part of the US Government , the entity prosecuting the offenses. His core fanbase was composed primarily of outdoorsy extreme sports enthusiasts, some of whom had some degree of skydiving/aviation knowledge, or at the very least were close with somebody who did. In the days after he published the video, we all shared this in chat threads and picked it apart like a holiday turkey sitting on a dining table. The response from the outdoors, aviation and extreme sports community was quick and unanimous... we all knew he was full of shit, and he lost all of us. This act was disrespectful in so many ways to so many people. Forest Services, the Aviation community, Naturalists, the Snowboarding/Skiing community, the Skydiving community and the greater Extreme sports community. I'm glad he is being held accountable for this foolish endeavor.

It's actually looking good now, I have a decent chance of being allowed to fly gliders and a single engine if I do well with gliders. So now I'm in the flight sim everyday trying to find those updrafts. Yesterday I found a really good one, I got all the way to FL 250. Kind of amazing to get that high up with no engine at all. At first I thought, this sucks, gliders only? But I discovered a love for it and I could actually afford a cheap used glider and my country is known as a great place to fly them, even soaring competitions happen a lot around the alps... good luck with your license.

    • @Kratos-eg7ez

Two years in prison is actually a good amount, especially for a non violent crime and a first time offender. And the fact he has to serve 18 minimum, even with good behavior, is a good amount too. And this is just for the lying to a government agency, we still dont know it he's going to get even more time from the national forest service. Lets not forget even if he serves his 1.5-2 years, he's probably going to have many years of parole, probably 6-8. Personally i think they should've given him more too, but thats just how the system works. Usually as long as your crime isn't horrible and its your first offense, they show leniency. it gives people a chance to realize they did wrong yet not punish them too severely, to give them a second chance. Which i find is actually a good thing, and i cant say "oh well i dont like this person so lets punish him more than someone else" that just leads to an unfair system. He's lost so much pulling this little stunt, and also is going to be serving time in prison and on parole, potentially even more time if a second case gets brought against him. Im satisfied with that. Like the dude above me said, 1.5-2 years in prison is NOT fun, he's probably going to be miserable after the first week, or actually the first day. And to think, if he didn't lie to the ntsb and destroy the evidence, he probably would've only had his license taken and no charges brought against him. (By the ntsb anyways, the national forest service mightve, but still)

Excellent video. Others I have seen did not mention the National Forest angle. It is also in a Wilderness Area; typically when aircraft crash or experienced forced landings in Wilderness Areas they are brought out by mule teams; no motor vehicles allowed.
Outside your area of expertise - and mine - are some of the characteristics of federal enforcement in the USA. There are formal "schedules" (charts) of penalties for particular classes of offense, with "enhancements" for what are considered "aggravating circumstances" in state offenses. States often have pathways for cutting sentences short, including mandatory "good behavior." Federal time is served in rather stark federal prisons, and the full time is served.
I would feel sorry for Trevor Jacob, but he invited all these foreseeable issues.

There’s a point system involved that determines the sentence of the convicted criminal. The min-max sentences are the limits, but a variety of factors, such as priors, can enhance the sentence upwards (but generally not past the upper limit). Similarly, there are factors (such as a first time offense) that can subtract points.
All that said, it doesn’t quite apply to the plea bargain. The agreement is under 24 months but over 18 months. If a sentence is under 24 months, it’s unappealable. Jacob cannot try to get his sentence overturned for a lighter one.

Changing the engine on a B-series Taylorcraft is not uncommon. Those little O-145 Lycomings are not very powerful, the carb (Marvel-Scheber MA-2) on them doesn’t even have a mixture control. Which means it would have a very had time getting to 10k feet. If he changed the engine, it may be because the A-65 Continental can get to that altitude. BTW, the Type Certificate Data Sheet for the BL-65 (A-700) is NOT the same as the BC-65 (A-696). “L”=Lycoming “C”= Continental. So he would need a Supplemental Type Certificate to install that A-65 into that Taylorcraft’s BL-65 airframe.

Wow, I love flying an airplane, I never took control until I was 39 years old, a friend took me up and lured me into working for him as a crop duster, an old Cessna 150. A long story very short I did this for 2 years of crop dusting, it was so much fun. And my first introduction to flying was how easy it was, and how much common sense it was to just jump in, take off, fly around, and then land. I never realized how simple these things were. "But" the most important skill, is how well you know your airplane, how it flies, how it operates, the engine mechanics, and every inspection before you jump inside and fly. These airplanes need to be perfect, at all times, every second. You need to have great pride, in preparing and uncovering any flaw that could create engine failure or mishap. So basically flying is very simple, most likely anybody can do it. With that being said, my view of Trevor Jacob is very disgusting. This young man is so intelligent, so much full of talent in every perspective, on top of flying, even parachuting, filming, and his knowledge in the mechanics, technology, and even the business side. Even his ability to own an airplane, just for waste. Such a lucky fortunate man, anybody would dream of being as fortunate as him. But his greed, his ego, his lack of respect, just ruined him, and caused him to throw all this away, at such a young age. What a breach in humanity. I hate to see him go to prison, I don't even think he deserves prison, but perhaps he needs prison to fit in his life so he learns to have trust again, which he most likely will never have again. He lost an entire world of opportunity most young people dream of. I could express a entire book on my disgust and disappointment of how stupid he turned out to be.

Petter: :"This was a TERRIBLE idea!" is maybe the biggest understatement ever spoken on this channel. Trevor Jacobs did a lot of planning but very little thinking on this stunt.

Arguably, he did at least *some* thinking, but it was never about his impact on the people and places around him. Only about himself.

    So.
    Basically.
If I were to just fly an airplane. Hop out, parachute down, and survive. Then *not* lie to the NTSB and be honest, I can get away with crashing an airplane for giggles?

In another video about the story, another youtuber compared TJ way of disposing of evidence to a vintage plane serial killer, collecting the body then dismembering it and dumping in several places.

In my mind, that act made a prison sentence entirely necessary. If he had owned up to it from day one, and said it was a dumb stunt, I think he would have lost his license but not his freedom. So often the coverup is more incriminating than the crime.

@echodelta9336 I remember crying with happiness each time I am able to land without crashing a study-level sim plane in P3D (Xtreme Prototypes Learjet 25. The Learjet is the first jet plane produced for the general public and has had more crashes than any other similar planes in real life. A truly beautiful thing to behold though).

He got 6 months in jail. In my honest opinion, he needed more jail time because he crashed a beautiful historic aircraft in such a matter. If his aircraft license hasn't been suspended yet, it should be.... forever.

It is sad that he deliberately crashed a classic airplane. HOWEVER! what makes me angry is that I live in Reno, Nevada, and I can literally see California out my front door. California has been ravaged with fires over the last five years or so. This was incredibly dangerous and reckless, especially in that part of California, where November is (generally) their dry season. A hot engine could have started a massive fire that could have spread very quickly, moving to nearby towns, burning them down, putting U.S. Forest Service fire personnel in life and death situations.
I have been a parish pastor for 20 of my 30 years of being a Christian clergy. Every wild land fire fighter carries a full body protection emergency blanket that they call a, "shake and bake." I have buried two wild land helicopter pilots. Let me be blunt. This guy is a a*hole and deserves a long time out behind bars to think about how he could have impacted so many lives, but just got lucky that day.

Ironically, the way he shut off the engine at altitude meant it was completely cold by the time it hit the ground. But it still had fuel on board and could have started a fire another way. Sparks from metal, battery shorting out, etc. Very hard to reduce the fire risk to zero, unless you don't do the stupid thing that causes the risk.

I would suggest you rethink the idea of putting people in jail for a "long time" for outcomes that never actually happened. I have no interest in living under a China like justice system.

HeavyDSparks helped recover a fatal plane crash from a mountain in Oregon. It took him a month of planning and permitting to complete the plane and body recovery.
It was the plane owner's family responsibility to recover the wreck, but the assets were tied up with the deceased. No body, no death certificate. It was a hot mess.
Here this jokester makes a mockery of private pilots in the name of clicks... surprising that YT hasn't taken the video down like they take so many other ones down...

Trevor doesn't have his full pilot's license back, yet. However, the FAA has granted him a temporary 120-day license. It is unclear whether the reinstatement of his full pilot's license is automatic following the 120-day period or whether this particular application (because of its controversial nature) will receive more scrutiny.
I'm not familiar with the FAA process, but if it operates like other federal agencies, my guess is that approval will be granted at the end of the 120 days.

He is a dangerous pilot and should never be allowed to own an aircraft again, glad he will spend time in jail, he could have killed people or started a forest fire, when he jumped out of the aircraft and left it to its own devices with no idea where it would come down.
He should have got 20 years and NO plea agreement.
He sounds like the type of person who would fly regardless of whether he had a pilot's licence.

Thanks for this comprehensive review! A couple points (both of which are probably better made by others, but this is TH-cam after all):
    1. To answer your dumbfounded question about why he posted the video … Jacob clearly thinks he is smarter than everyone else and probably wouldn’t get caught. (He is clearly delusional about being smarter than everybody else.) But he is also a thrill seeker, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he enjoyed the thrill of the public attacks and investigation. Remember: He’s not normal.
    2. The thing that touches me the most about this story is the true affection that you and other aviators and fans of aviation have for the plane he crashed. It was a cool little airplane that helped flying students, and he used it as a prop, destroying it for no good reason. It didn’t deserve that fate.
    3. OK, one more. Let’s say this little adventure will wind up costing him $500,000. He’s actually lucky. If he had started a forest fire, he could’ve been on the hook for millions of dollars. And if any campers, cabin owners, tourists, or firefighters were injured or killed, it could have been jail for life. This guy doesn’t deserve to drive a CAR when he gets out of jail … because we all know he’s going to do something stupid and dangerous.

The sad thing is he COULD have made a slightly less successful video that would have been A-OK. Make it a "simulating a parachute jump after engine failure" video, go up with a second pilot, shut off the engine and jump out. Second pilot takes over and brings the plane back safety, Jacob still gets his cool "jumping out of a dead plane" shots, and he gets to keep flying. Only problem: he wanted to go megaviral, and that type of video would have been popular but wouldn't get enough attention for him.
