And weren't the majority of victims of the witch trials very much..."breedable?" 😖
(I'm assuming by "breedable" he means young and fertile women.)
Hmmmm...I wonder if his religion is making it hard to recognize that for most of Christian history it was used by anti-science delusional people who genuinely believed in magic and witches.
He makes it sound like the witch accusation was just a cover up for the true reason of just getting rid of women who can't have babies or whatever.
No genuine beliefs involved at all.
If it wasn't his precious fellow Christian Bible worshippers conducting the witch trials, I bet he wouldn't be so apologetic and rewriting history. 🤔

I still can't get past how effective anti-communist propaganda has continued to be. Most normies still think it's Communism vs Democracy rather than Communism vs Capitalism. Marxism is much more representationally democratic than what we currently have (in the US, especially), so it's ludicrous if you know much of anything about any of the related topics. But normies don't.
I've found it effective to point out that Communism is not in opposition to democracy, it's in opposition to Capitalism (especially unregulated). They are associating the totalitarian governments who have intentiknall misused communism as a cover for corruption and abuses of power with the economic principle they hid behind. There's a reason that has happened so many times. People want the things that Marxism calls for, they just don't understand the meaning of the words they are using.
It's no surprise when you realize how active and intentional the propaganda campaign against it was during the Cold War. And that was after the biggest baddies in popular history had misappropriated the term Socialist. Again, because it was more popular and palatable than fascism. Fascists love to misuse words. It degrades the importance of facts and accuracy, among other effects.
and actually pushes people to get a vote on much more of what affects their daily lives. Unions and worker co-ops are completely democratic. As long as they don't become corrupt, but that's pretty easy to regulate for.

    The actual fall of Rome:
    - wasn't really a fall, as they regrouped their rule
    - the Eastern Empire still remained for centuries
    - was mostly due to not maintaining their military technological hegemony
    - and the increased pay needed to make soldiers actually join their army
    - as well as increasing reliance on mercenaries
    - in combination with over expansion
    - and unrest among other 'barbarian' tribes
    - corruption and mismanagement among politicians and the wealthy elite
    - the wealthy relied on slavery for work, and slaves became less abundant
    - the wealthy fled Rome and set up independent fiefdoms
... the weaknesses of Rome came from their elite, not their population. And it was corruption and self interest among themselves which drove that.

Hes actually talking about a theory on the downfall of the Roman Empire called "Decadence Theory" in Historians circles. It is an outdated and reductionist theory that has long been expanded upon by the "Socioeconomic Theory" for example.
So after watching a bit more he definitely sounds like he really likes the Decadence Theory. Sexual and cultural deviation ( the existence of non-straight people and the introduction of foreign religions) and heightened immigration inevitably leading to the downfall of "civilized people" is a pretty common talking point with reactionary "historians". Back then Christianity, gay people and "barbarians" destroyed Rome and now its Islam, still gay people and refugees who "destroy the civilized West". Its just racism and reactionary politics packed into a smart sounding professional context.

The degeneracy idea of the fall of Rome simply doesn't make sense if you study actual Roman history. The decline of Rome was far from linear, it ebbed and flowed between good and bad periods. The reigns of Justinian and Alexios Komnenos took place respectively 150 and 600 years after the fall of the western empire, and they were golden ages in which cultural and technological accomplishments occurred that would have been the envy of Augustan Rome.
Guys like whatifalthist piss me off because they clearly don't care about the actual fascinating history they bring up - all that matters to them is selectively picking things out of context that can support their views.

    • @RecRoomPlays

Not to mention that the "Fall of Rome" reactionaries always tend to conveniently ignore the Byzantine Empire which continued to persist for another 1000 years after Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus in 476.
The "Fall of Rome" narrative in itself is fairly conservative and reactionary though, so it's not surprising that so many conservatives in the modern day latch on to it. Propaganda suggests that the collapse of the Roman empire spelled doom for Europe, but most of the Germanic rulers who picked things up in its wake continued using Roman policies as well as they could anyway, because it was just easier that way. The kingdoms themselves weren't all connected under one central Rome anymore, and over time things changed of course, but the real trick is that there was always a lot of turmoil in the Roman Empire itself anyway, especially in the 3rd-5th centuries. A large portion of Rome's European territory was effectively being run by the "barbarians" by 476 anyway, because Rome itself was struggling significantly with economy problems and a shoddy military, so they outsourced to the Germanic peoples for military help and repaid them by essentially giving them vassalages.
And then of course there's the additional twist in the history of Charlemagne, because Rome's legacy and prominence in Europe was still so strong even 300 years later that this completely unrelated guy wanted to go around and try to reestablish a Roman Empire. It only really held up in Germany and northern Italy after his death, but that simple unification was also highly glorified by a certain group of violent reactionaries many centuries later.
Reactionaries have a vested interest in embellishing the "golden era" of Roman times while exaggerating the "fall", because it gives them justifications for their own hatred.

If anyone's interested in an actual, highly researched historical analysis of Rome, or of the Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment era that Whatifalthist is dancing around here, I'd recommend much of Mike Duncan's work. His History of Rome podcast is an extremely drawn out recounting of nearly the entire history of Rome, and his Revolutions podcast covers many of the Western Liberal revolutions of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, from the English Revolution to the Haitian Revolution, and from the Revolutions of 1848 to the Mexican Revolution. He does a really great job narrativizing these topics to make them more presentable to people who may be more averse to in-depth history, it's really good.

Someone once posted a video of his on reddit (r/GenZ), called A Historian Explains Being Gen Z and I felt compelled to comment and inform whoever was watching that Whatifalthist is not a credentialed historian, then someone replied to me and actually said "You don’t need a college peace of paper with weighting on it to be a professional in something". I was utterly shocked and pointed you you needed a college degree to be a doctor/scientist/lawyer etc. To be fair, the person who responded to me conceded my analogy, but they still didn't understand the qualifications a professional historian needs to have and why history students must go to college; they thought it was a waste of money. So I had to explain to them that a deep professional knowledge of history requires a lot of education and training that we can't trust people to be self-taught experts in such matter.
The point is, I'm not sure that many people understand what kind of education/training professional historians need to have. They probably think you just need to read a few books, then you're an expert. That's probably why a lot of people (especially young people) take Whatifalthist seriously.

In the case off whatifalthist the source is psychedelics and obscure nazi adjacent books so he's clearly not a professional. Yes, you do. Becoming a professional historian isn't just about reading a few books, it requires a lot of training that needs to be tested. You need to do analyses and research that has to be reviewed by more credentialed historians. It's not a subject that can merely be self-taught. It's very disheartening to see how many people don't appreciate or realize what kinds of qualifications professional historians need to have.

I’m gonna be honest, I did used to enjoy some of whatalthist’s videos. Not his social views, but some of his more speculative stuff was at least interesting. He made some interesting speculations on what the actual next WW3 would most likely be the result of and who would most likely be the catalyst for it.
But at some point I was just watching a video of his and he mentioned he had no education in history and that sort of just killed it for me, it wasn’t intentional but I just completely lose interest in his content after that. I understand that you can be smart and well read and have a decent conceptual understanding of things even if you’re not directly educated, but there is big asterisks there.
You can have science channels like Veritasium or Vsauce where people who aren’t literal physicists or physics degree holders explain to you ideas and developments in physics. But the difference is they aren’t making their own conclusions, they are communicating the findings and explanations of actual physicists to the audience in a more entertaining and digestible way.
But someone like whatifalthist actively draws his own conclusions and speculations based on the history stuff he reads. He’s not just presenting something the wider history field has stated, he’s maybe citing ideas from some books but largely trying to pass off his own speculation and ideas from his own understanding. And that’s something that really isn’t the most reliable thing when you haven’t been properly educated in a field. It’s one thing to have a non-historian just communicate to you in an entertaining video the findings of major historical sources, it’s another for a non-historian to actively give statements and assumptions that are framed like an expert opinion but from someone who isn’t educated on the matter.

    • @karmabeast
      @karmabeast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Hell its worse than that: if you wanna call yourself a *historian* like he does in this video (and not just a history communicator), your shit has to be informed by first hand accounts. You *must* study census records, journals by nobles and peasants, merchant transactions, ship cargo logs, archeological artifacts, etc. TH-camrs you mentioned like Veritasium and Vsauce are waaaay closer to being actual scientists than whatalthist is to being a historian, because they at least actually do experiments.

A little correction/lecture on norse pagan culture:
Contrary to popular belief, there was no such thing as "when you die in battle, you get to go to valhalla".
Valhalla surprisingly wasn't an equivalent to christian heaven and not seen as a reward for doing good in life; in fact, it was seen as a spiritual sacrifice. You're sacrificing the eternity of afterlife for the gods, and get a short (relative to eternity) period of awesome partying in return. Most people were considered to go to an afterlife in Nifelheim, where you...kinda just exist the same way you did in life, but as a spirit. Nothing exciting, but also no eternal torment in/by Hel, which was mostly reserved for actually bad people.
See, the mythology behind this is that Odin had a prophecy told to him that foretold Ragnarök, so he's preparing for it. Hence, he's recruiting the most valorous of fallen warriors to serve as his soldiers (called Einherjar) during Ragnarök. And because dying as a spirit soldier during the last battle kinda sucks when everyone else gets a chill afterlife, in exchange for that you get to party a bunch. It's kinda like real life army service, only more cool and with partying and drinking and stuff.
Then there's also the fact that Ragnarök is cyclical, so Odin has already tried this and failed a bunch of times, so you shouldn't get your hopes up that you will survive Ragnarök if you become Einherjar.

“Decadence is when culture is put above reality”
Humans literally can’t exist outside culture. Even science at the end of the day is culture and not reality. Any claim to a “natural” state of being is a cultural claim since you can only conceive the concept “natural” through a contrast with “cultural”, and thus will always be viewed through a lens of language and thus culture. It is inescapable. You can’t think without language, you can’t see without language, the only way we can know an object falls with X acceleration is because we have given physical propertied a name. Try to see something for which you have no name or no concept in your head. It is physically impossible.
Try watching LOTR without sound or subtitles, you will
understand nothing. Reading LOTR will give you an even deeper, more immerse experience with just letters.
Language is the matrix, it is what allows us to have thoughts. And culture is a shared language system. Thus it is impossible to put “reality” above culture because that very thought is cultural, as soon as you define natural you have made it cultural.

Supposedly, most of our conception about Samurai honor and mythology came about during the late Edo period and after, during which Samurai played much more of a domestic servant role. During the period in which they were dedicated warriors, it seems they were just rich dudes with armor and bows; no special honor system outside of the deals they made with their lords.

    • @michaelweir9666
      @michaelweir9666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Funny thing about that is this lines up almost completely parallel to the culture of knights and chivalry, in which it was mostly during the post-renaissance period that romance about a knight's honor became the focal point of a noble's sense of spiritual actualization, since the landed gentry of this time would most likely never have the chance to be the warriors they perceived their ancestors to be.
In reality, knights during most of medieval europe were glorified thugs who shook down peasants for tax collection as much as they could within the law so that they could live comfortably while paying upward to the next guy in the protection racket that was feudalism. There was a self-aggrandizing culture, sure, though not nearly on the same fantastical level as what they would become.

You have a qualifier that you don't count culturally rural "primitive" non-white nations? Okay, urban Germany crushed rural Russia in World War 1. What's that? Oh you have another reason that doesn't count because of political issues interfering with war? Okay, Japan beat China and took Manchuria solo mid 1v1.

I cannot believe I used to watch this dipshit's videos. I feel like he used to have interesting ideas about alternate timelines, but the second he started commenting on actual history and on geopolitics, philosophy, and economics he totally fell off a cliff.

The fucked thing is that from a certain angle there is some "truth" to his ravings, but the thing that often leads to the decline of great civilisations isn't this nebulous "decadence", it's a much broader sense of complacency and stagnation - No longer innovating, reminiscing about the "good ol' days", dismissing the idea that any upstart might ever come to rival your glory...
Y'know, the things CONSERVATIVES LIKE TO DO

Any time I see the words "decadence", "hedonism", "collapse of Western civilization" or "degenerate" in a TH-cam history video I can predict their political views with 100% accuracy.
