Oh boy what a day this turned out to be! 3 NS trains today sadly at Locust Grove: an unknown container train, Manifest 372 (car strike), and container train 214.
How it happens was a car decided to stop on the tracks behind a truck at the red light, the gates started coming down, so she got out and told the truck driver to move but he didnt until it was too late, she tried to get back to move her car but realized the train was getting too close. Everyone is ok Thank the Lord!

This looked like a deliberate act. I don't want the car anymore, it's financed for way more than it is worth, I have gap insurance, so let's park it on the tracks and walk away. I will only look back after the accident.

It looks like she left her car there on purpose, if she really wanted to move it quickly, she could have put in in neutral and gave it a slight push and it would have move off the tracks. Her car was on a slight slope so it wouldn't have taken much to get it to move...

Like what are the odds of a vehicle stopping on a crossing with maybe a mechanical problem?
Not knowing how long it was there, I wonder why could it not get pushed off the crossing by bystanders.
    All rhetorical questions
Like why do people trapped between crossing gates, choose having their vehicle destroyed over breaking the crossing gate, by driving through it.
Maybe I should cut back on the number of trains vs cars videos that I watch!

As a conductor you know that the train dynamics behind you can vary greatly and that an emergency application is not always the safest and wisest choice. I'll grant you I did not listen to what this engineer did so I'll bow to your knowledge here. And yes, whether or not big holing the train or full application was the right thing to do....yeah....there will be all sorts of management second guessing going on. Peace bro.

@@cdavid8139 How long ago has it been since you've been in the seat? You are correct in that tonnage, total brakes in the train, DPU, etc., are a factor. It's also a very real possibility that dumping it can lead to a derailment, but a full service application can do the same thing. But you also can factor in that dumping it from both ends via your EOT or DPU does help to distribute these forces more evenly than dumping it from the head end only. The beauty of this technology, especially distributed power is that it does just what it says. It distributes starting and stopping power more evenly. Does it suck that it's costing us jobs? Sure does. But it sure beats changing knuckles.

I still can't figure out how so many vehicles get stuck on the tracks. At most the train is 10 ft. wide... enough to step out of the way in 2 steps . Now I understand when the road isn't built for low-boy trucks the crossing should be properly graded of immense signs.

Why do trains stop after hitting something on the tracks

    • @humansvd3269

Because it's an accident and they are required to do so.

Once the emergency brakes are engaged you kinda just have to let it happen. Also need to check for any damage, maybe even police evaluation of the incident if applicable, brakes need to be reset/checked, etc.

They tried not to hit the car, but they were too close to stop. Also, they have to check for damages and the driver if they're OK. People should just get off the tracks and not try to beat the train. It's happened to all railroads, not just NS.

  • @edy21865

Why was the emergency brake activation so late from this incompetent crew? You can clearly hear the locomotives only start to throttle down when they are going past the camera. That means they didn’t start emergency brake action until after they had hit the car. The crew had such a clear view of the car when they went around the curve giving them plenty of time to start emergency braking before, but they wasted all that time wanting to hit the car before doing anything.

You obviously don't know a single thing about how trains operate. The train was thrown into Emergency before striking the car, it can take a Mile for a massive freight train like that to fully come to a stop. And the crew wasn't deliberately wanting to strike the car, they couldn't do anything but hit the breaks and then simply wait for the train itself to come to rest. Don't make ridiculous assumptions upon things you don't know about..

Trains are miles long with different weight in each car and add all together it's a lot even in full emergency the engineer and conductor can only wait till the train stops, the reason trains don't stop quickly is because of 3 factors weight, speed and amount of cars the train has the factor in the stopping distance

@@supermariotransitfan1662 Sorry if I hurt your huge train ego, but I was just shocked at how slowly the train decelerated if at all. There are plenty of other videos out there on heavy trains doing 50+ mph having an emergency brake application and coming to a stop much quicker than what is shown here. I was just expressing a concern I had about how late the emergency brake was applied and how little affect it had. Pardon me for blaming the train crew, that was premature.

So I read the description and then I go back to the video because it's just a boring morning and I really don't know why I'm doing this and I could be doing something else and I don't see a truck in front or behind or anywhere near this car and then I wonder why they couldn't just throw it in reverse and back it off the tracks sometimes I guess I just don't understand people's thought process speaking of this why did I spend this much time writing this comment and watching the video but anyhow thanks for the video
