    Joe Jackson was the
Father. Tito is one of the brothers. Yes, he was strict and abusive.

I mean....but wasn’t he just a normal father back then

    • @carolyncappitelli1460

Sadly, no. Those boys were beaten and abused verbally and emotionally if they tried to just be kids or if their performance wasn't perfect.

Ok....here's the thing and I'm not condoning what joe did, but men of his generation, that was how some of them raised their kids.....joe had to contend with gangs & drugs in gary in....so he did what a father did....keep his children away from that by any means necessary!!

    Joe Jackson is the father.
From left to right: Tito is on the guitar, Marlon is next to him, Jackie is the oldest, tallest in the middle, Michael, and Jermaine is on the bass.
It was always evident Michael was going to be a huge star, not a surprise to anyone who paid attention.

Shy M true. Joe was not a great father in many ways, as most of us whom know about Michael know. It was sad, & probably why Michael didn’t want to grow up as an adult or was child-like. However, Michael just embodies the soul of a someone well older then himself belting that song out as a kid, I think that his musical talent & singing abilities were not teachable, but a natural gift that he possessed his entire life.

Dad Joseph just passed a few years ago. We found out when they were well grown that he was abusive the the whole family but especially Michael. He was a unsuccessful musician so I think it was jealousy and bitterness.

Joe Jackson could have let the Jackson children live regular lives in Gary, Indiana, and seek work in the local steel mills and factories once they became adults. Industries that would eventually shut down. Where would they have ended up? That scenario would have deprived the world of the great talent the Jacksons had to share. Since he has taken the criticism from the early 90's right to the grave, he also deserves the credit because the boys just weren't going to be discovered and find fame and fortune through the Chitlin Circuit alone. Groups like the Jacksons and the Sylvers were never going to get weekly television exposure the way the Osmonds and Wayne Newton were. That said, the Osmonds themselves said that they were blown away when they first saw the Jackson Five perform, so much so that they abandoned the old Mitch Miller style show tunes they performed on the Andy Williams show and changed their act to match the contemporary music of that era, specifically the sound of the Jackson Five.

Berry Gordy signed the Jackson Five to Motown and was instrumental in getting Michael to open up and become the star. Dad Joe who was very abusive and domineering was very jealous of Gordy's influence over the boys and got them to leave Motown. Jermaine, the bass player, was married to Berry's daughter and refused to leave, and Gordy owned the name Jackson Five, so they got little brother Randy to join and changed their name to the Jacksons. That's why during the Victory reunion tour there were six of them, because both Jermaine and Randy were with them.

    • @ceeceedior21
      @ceeceedior21 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Technically he didn’t own them.. because if he DID he would have stopped them from singing their old songs. Like he did to Florence Ballard from the supremes. Jermaine actually didn’t want to leave Motown because he felt it was home and how they got their start... because hazel Gordy told him basically that business is business and she would be with him regardless.

I was born about the same time that Michael was. He was about 10 when all of this started. and, you're right, it was obvious back then that he was very talented. I remember my mom saying "God help that child when he grows up. He is not getting to have a childhood." He did pay a price for that and tried to recapture some of what he missed. (For example, he built his own amusement park on his property.) He once said that he is most comfortable on stage and would sleep on stage if he could. Very talented people often suffer because they don't fit into the world the way the rest of us do. He was certainly one of them.

A few years later, Randy Jackson was added on Auxiliary percussion (specifically Bongos) and then a full replacement for Jermaine when he left in 1975. After 1975, they signed to CBS record, ditching Motown, and changed their name to The Jacksons. Jermaine married the Motown CEO's daughter so he stayed with them. The J5 hit America like a hurricane ! They had three consecutive number one singles on their first album. And it was obvious even then that Michael was something special. If you watch old interviews from this period, he's even more charming and funny than in his Moonwalking period. I wasn't surprised that he hit so big in 1983, because I remembered how big he hit in 1969.
When Rolling Stone did their first '100 best singles of all time' list in the early 80's, "I Want You Back" came in at number two, second only to "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and just ahead of "Satisfaction". By that time I'd pretty much forgotten just how good it was, so I pulled out my old single, blew off all the dust, and cranked it up. It wasn't great, it was even better ! I sure has hell haven't forgotten it since.

If Joe Jackson hadn't pushed the boys the way he did, the world would have never heard of the Jackson 5. The road to success was hard and the odds were against them. They weren't getting television time like the Osmonds were every week and or a Vegas venue like Wayne Newton. The Chitlin Circuit they performed through was largely ignored by the mainstream media (with a few exceptions) while they perfected their stage act in the '60s. Since people continue to give Joe Jackson a lot of $h!+ even though he is now cold in his grave, he deserves the praise for making them practice, practice, practice, because they had to be perfect in order to even be mentioned in the same breath as the Osmonds.

    A few things:
    1. The Jackson 5 in the early '70s were a HUGE. They were a bit of a teeny bopper/bubble gum group, but the difference between them and others in their lane is that songs like "I Want You Back", "ABC", and "I'll Be There" have had staying power, unlike other teen idol songs from that time. I mean, no one remembers songs by David Cassidy (who was also a huge bubble gum contemporary) but the Jackson 5 still gets airplay. It's good time, innocent, kiss-on-the-cheek music, but interesting in it's own way. Heck, just listen to the bass line in this song...it's a groove for the ages that doesn't get old.
    2. There's a reason why MJ was the lead of the group and a future GOAT, even though he was the youngest of the brothers. Just look and listen to him in this video. He's already charismatic, smooth, and that voice...wow. The brothers can be a bit pitchy when they sing their parts, but Michael? Nope. Natural gifts, coupled with the tyrannical disciplinary rehearsal methods that his father demanded of him and the group, made MJ the diamond that he was. We all miss him. RIP Michael.

Joseph and Kathleen Jackson (their parents) had nine living kids: Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, LaToya, Marlon, Michael, Randy, and Janet. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael were the Jackson 5. Later on, they would become the Jacksons when Jermaine leaves the group to become a solo artist. The initial group the Jacksons are Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Michael, and Randy. My favorite J5 track is Looking through the windows and there's a youtube video of them performing this in Paris that's excellent. PS they had a TV show variety show in the 70's you can look that up on youtube too.
