i am chainsaw ignorant experience wise , but i got a 400c for my first chainsaw . my local dealer sold it to me for $925 with the 25 inch blade/chain (plus tax) on march 1st 2024 i'm on my second tank . people say i could have gotten something smaller/cheaper for my use . but they smile when i let them try it . :)
Thankyou for being Honest, Now I'll take you seriously...I own both saws now and I love them both...Enjoy my work because of them ,I just got my 400 and I'm feeling the light weightless and power...The 500i is in a league of its own...I keep them all Sharp as all get out...I recommend the Jason Eagan straightshot...
I like Stihl and I like Husky. I love my 400 with a 20 inch bar. Where Stihl nailed it aside from power, is the anti-vibe. It’s the nicest anti-vibe that I’ve found on any Stihl when compared to my 362, 500 or 661. The MS400’s anti-vibe is up there with my 572XP which is an extremely smooth running saw.
I find it hard to believe it's broken in yet. I have a new ms 261 that I've run fairly hard all summer & fall. It's just now taking more fuel adjustment & running stronger fter 3 gallons of gas
I live not far from you in Tennessee just north of Chatt just got mine 25 inch lite bar really hoping I like it. I too have husky but honestly have had crap luck with them 550 /562 s I was one of the fortunate ones lol who got the run with crank seal issues and my dealer saying I can buy new ones for cost of shop time on them. I’m like nah goin back to Stihl. Good videos pal
My MS400 seems to lack low down torque when compared to any other saw I’ve run (MS260, 362, 461, 038s, and 365xp) but once it gets into its power band it’s a beast, revs and cuts faster than any of the other saws mentioned above. I assume for it to rev so fast the exhaust port is quite high, which would explain why the low down torque is lacking, you can’t have everything. I enjoy using a saw with low down torque but the 400 gets the job done quicker, and is light, so that’s my go to saw.
It's gonna kick on one day and oh what a glorious day it will be. You will be a major Stihl fan boy I'm sure. I'll be at home all cozy and ole Boedy will have a moment. LOL

We run the ms400cm`s with 25" stihl std bar`s on them for our light weight firewood bucking saw`s in seasoned hard wood and they cut well .But they are no 500i or ms462 .I paid $900 out the door 4mo ago with the 25" std stihl bar. I put the wrap kit on them, i do not recall what the wrap kits cost.
I got mid 180 and without the base gasket with a 590 cylinder I pulled from another saw that had a burned up piston and 620 coil. I have one tank through it cut some cookies and seems like it is faster than my broken in 590 Right around 10% hopefully it'll improve when it breaks in
a 500i is only 1 pound heavier then the 400c ive ran both and the 500i is kind of a crazy saw. i like the 400 actually but my go to for most stuff is are 440 mag. its not to heavy has good power and decent torq starts easy and just never dies. literally have ran it almost daily without any big issues for 3 years putting atleast 3 or 4 tanks normally each day. its just a trooper
I bought a 400 cm. It came with a 20-inch bar. In all my years cutting, if you need a bigger bar than what the manufacturer has on it, get a bigger saw.
Why to port a 590 over buying a 620. Because you can pick up a used 590 so cheap. But ya if your going to pay someone to port it just get the 620. But in reality it’s plenty of saw with just a muffler mod and pulling the limiter caps. I’m waiting to port mine after I see boedy’s results.
How much is it to port a saw? $1009 with a 25" reg bar. For some reason I like Stihl. Got a 550 mark 2 last year for an upgrade to my 290 Farm Boss. It runs but I like my Farm Boss more. I wanted to try a Stihl pro saw. It's no racer but the 290 Farm Boss was bought used in 2016, it's on 08. It runs, it just runs. Jonny 5 cords a year and camp wood killer.

If you actually think your statement is true and valid, type "Novice Lumberjack MS400" into the search bar and see all the videos of the MS400 being beaten by random different saws. It is almost identical in power to a Husqvarna 268, which is basically a 40 year old open port design. While the 400 is nice and light weight, in stock trim it is not particularly powerful. I like it. But... I sure as hell wouldn't compare it to a 572xp. That's just silly.

@@nateolmsted899 I am with you on the dealer support. If you need a dealer that is. Since I got into this hobby, I am completely amazed at how little most "pros" actually know about chainsaws. For example...many of the new saws, 562xp, 550xp, echo 590 and 620, 572xp, and probably many of the Stihls (I just don't know them as wel)- I would NEVER consider running them extensively without first opening the muffler and possibly also opening up the intake side.. Also of course, modifying the carburetor when limited. I have seen a handful of failures with these 590s. It's always heat related. And heat, heat is easily controlled with a muffler mod and properly adjusted carburetor. In this modern time that we live in, saws are unrealistically corked up. Gotta release that heat, or any saw will burn up.
@@nateolmsted899 So how did yours fail you? I have never heard of these Echos having bad clutches, oilers, bearings, ignitions, crank seals, carburetor issues...nothing like that. Only heat and some air filter issues. I would betcha it was heat that caused your failure. Am I right?

What about also cutting the exhaust port shallower on the 590 to be the same as a 620. Because they were different sizes between the cylinders.

Have you calibrated the Mtronic yet? See pages 46 and 47 in your manual. There are a couple TH-cam of the procedure also.
