Also an army medic and civilian paramedic - always in my pocket (can't get lost). Also - a stethoscope is a great way to get choked out by a combative patient, so there is that. I have used a master classic II for 6 years and think its great, but upgrading since I need something that supports pediatrics better. My wife uses a classic III as a pediatric resident and likes it overall.
Classic Littmann III is perfect for nursing students! I don't wear it around my neck because 1. It can irritate my skin from running around and 2. It can swing and get in the way of patient care. The cardiology IV is a great stethoscope but sometimes lack of experience makes it more difficult to figure out the nuances of different sounds so I agree better suited for later or as a provider. Thanks for another great video! Always enjoy hearing your insight!
I'm getting ready for nursing school in the spring, and this video was timed perfectly! I just sent a not-so-subtle list for Christmas to my husband lol Thank you!
A stethoscope is a good investment, it is also one of the few tools that can potentially last a lifetime. I agree that it also depends on what your goal is, providers will require a tool that can detect finer sounds (e.g., need a finer tuned stethoscope) as opposed to what can be detected with a $20 stethoscope. A Master Classic II or a Cardiology series are always good to have. I would also recommend having a cheaper stethoscope as well, in case anyone needs to use it they can borrow the cheap as oppose to using your own. I wouldn't advise lending your own as a way to prevent any accidental theft or misplacement. I have always loosely rolled the stethoscope to fit inside my scrub's pocket, I don't know anyone who wears their stethoscope around their neck all day; it's uncomfortable, not to mention sweaty and itchy (that might be my dermatitis).
Liz! AMAZING TIMING, once again! I was just about to buy my stethoscope for nursing school, and I always cherish your advice. Thank you for such an awesome and comprehensive video!
When I was going to emt school my parents bought me the cardiology 4 with my name engraved literally the best stethoscope I have ever used trying to get into nursing school haha so stay tuned
I have the Littmann III Classic. This is my second week of OB clinicals. I had Mother/baby last week and loved that tiny stethoscope. The sounds were so clear. When I did ED clinicals I fell in love with the Littmann cardio stethoscope. No flipping and the lung and heart sounds were ridiculously clear. One day I will spend my funds to purchase one. At clinicals I usually have my stethoscope in my pocket with alcohol wipes. However, it is really inconvenient when I'm asked to perform a task that requires it and need to use it quickly. So I'm reconsidering placing in back around my neck for quick access.
When I worked on the floor I would assess my patients then just leave it at the desk and use it again if I needed it. Now that I work in the ED I wear it around my neck all the time but try to take it off in between patients more d/t the weight especially after upgraded to the cardiology IV.
My school was gracious enough to gift us an MDF stethoscope - thankful but hated it to no end (couldn’t hear a thing); since I was in an ABSN and had a plan to become an NP and work outpatient as an RN, I did buy my Littmann cardio stethoscope on sale on Black Friday on Amazon. Love it and I’ve heard murmurs on newborn infants in my peds rotation with it; I’ve even diagnosed older adults with murmurs as a student and referred out; won’t trade it it for anything else.
I started with an MDF MD ONE through school and my initial months of work as a full fledged nurse. It was great for heart and lungs sounds, but lacked so much in the bowel sound arena. I work a GI unit, and we get so many patients with near-silent gut sounds, I needed better. I now use a Littman Cardiology IV, and it blows my old MDF out of the water. Both are solid options though!
I've always worn my stethoscope around my neck. From the time of nursing school,. all the way to now that I'm an NP. It's never bothered me at all. I used a cheapo stethoscope in nursing school (came with a pocket organizer for $20) and once I graduated and was working in the CTICU upon graduating, I bought a Master Classic II (I knew I wasn't going to deal with pediatrics) and then shortly after I splurged and got the Master Cardiology (which I only keep at home as a backup and to assess family members). My Master Classic II has been going strong since 2005, just had to repair the rim a few months ago.
Glad I came across this video. I have applied to several nursing programs. I'm trying to buy my supplies and necessities now since I will not be able to work during nursing school.
I used a Littmann Classic III through nursing school and now that I’m in the NICU, I have my infant stethoscope. I only wear mine around my neck right after using mine and I’m staying at the bedside for more hands-on care. But other than that, I have my stethoscope on my hip using a hip clip.
As a paramedic I definitely wore mine around my neck at least when not at the station. I used a littmann master classic II. I still have it 20 years later. I’m going to get the cardiology IV for PA school.
I wear mine or have it on the computer I'm using. I don't let it leave my site lol because they go missing. Plus I just upgraded to littman cardiology so I don't want to loose it.
I really appreciated the side by side of the 2 choices. Even though I don't intend on being a NP, I work in an outpt dialysis and most of the time I am the highest level of medical professional in the building and the medical providers that I am consulting with are having to use my assessments in order to give verbal orders over the phone. I'm always listening for crackles in lung sounds and changes in heart rate and rhythm and or pleural friction rubs/pericardial friction rubs. I have been eyeing the cardiology IV for a little while and I think I may pull the trigger on it and get one.
Thank you for another great video! Fun fact - you can use your HSA/HRA dollars to buy a stethoscope! That’s how I got mine essentially for free since my HRA money was about to expire at the end of last year!
Ohh my gosh! I’ve followed you forever ago and didn’t realize we live in the same town. I’m a nursing student in Waketech and if I see you anywhere in the hallways of one of the hospitals I’m rotating, I’m definitely gonna be in fan mode
For those with hearing loss like me, I'd recommend getting an EKO attachment which amplifies sounds and allow for wireless connection. I personally have the Cardiology IV. The downside to it is the weight; it's heavy which is why I don't put it around my neck. The tubing is also fairly short.
I always did until I worked trauma on a lock down unit. We had violent patients and prison inmates on our floor. I was warned not to wear it around my neck because a patient could coke you with it. Admittedly I am back to wearing it around my neck because in out patient dialysis I am constantly listening to heart and lung sounds.
as a hospice nurse I do wear my stethoscope constantly, as I have laid it down in patient homes before and walked out of patient homes without it. This became old, so now, it is like my second skin, or a part of my clothing.

SHOULD A STETHOSCOPE BE HUNG AROUND YOUR NECK? Personally I don't like anything even a tie around my neck, what more a heavy stethoscope🤔, hahaha. According to the manufacturers, the stethoscope shouldn't even be on your neck. All those oils from your skin damage its tubing and reduce its lifespan. So no one - neither you nor the scope - is comfortable.
My mother-in-law just bought my stethoscope for nursing school as a gift. She is a nurse and said I would want the Cardiology IV since my goal is to ultimately become a NP. I’m nervous that I should have gotten the Classic 3 instead 😬 should I send it back and get a new one?
also make sure you price compare sites that have free engraving vs $10 for engraving. usually the "free" service are $10 (or more) more expensive because they include the engraving in the price (from my observation) so if you're not going to actually engrave it.... it'll probably be cheaper elsewhere. Etsy has very nice hand made metal stamped stethoscope ID tags for sale at affordable prices (>$10 + ship).
I’m 39, I’ll be 40 in December and hopefully will be starting my lpn journey in January. I plan on working in geriatrics (ltc) are the first two stethoscopes you mentioned good for that work environment? Also suggestions on people who hate things in their ears? The ear pieces always hurt my ears, I can’t even wear most ear buds bc of it...😬
It looks like some of them come with ear pieces in varying sizes... if stuff like that bothers your ears best advice I can give is finding the closest as-comfortable-as-it-gets fit and just periodically wearing it until you adapt to the feeling a bit better. Smaller lighter earbuds may help your ears adjust. Gummy's and Jlab's are my favorite earbuds, and they come in sizes small enough even my 9yr old can wear them comfortably. Best of luck and hope you find a solution that works!
Hi there! I’m in my last semester of NP school, but I’ve had my Master Cardiology since I started as a bedside RN. I got the Master Cardiology because when I was a new grad in a noisy, busy Emergency Room, I was having trouble hearing with my Classic III. So, something for RNs to consider, especially in the Emergency Room. Just my two cents! Great video and thank you for all of your videos! I enjoy them!
It might be a little overkill. I always recommend the classic. It's what I used. The Cariology would be fine, but why pay more when you don't need it, you know. Stethoscopes tend to wander and I didn't want to lose it 😅
@@NurseLiz I got this comment after I had already purchased the Cardiology IV and wouldn’t you know that I never use it 😭 Covid regulations has us just using disposable stethoscopes per patient. Bummer. But thank you for responding and loved the video ❤️
Adhd is hard as a nurse, I don't know if it applies to you, but im sorry I can't I keep up with your speed. Your knowledge is at the right speed, but you're running a 500ml bolus at 500ml a second.
I’m starting my Medical assistant class in a week and I’ve been trying to decide on what stethoscope to get because I can’t afford a littmann stethoscope at this moment and I’m really trying to get something affordable and of good quality any suggestions?
I like the overall video but saying that a nurse doesn’t need a cardiology iv because they don’t need to diagnose lung sounds or heart tones is a pretty closed minded view. Why would a nurse not want the best tool for the job, that will ultimately get the correct treatment faster?
In my nursing school they told us not to wear the stethoscope around our necks because the patient could choke you with it.... that always stuck with me and I like to keep it in my pocket lol
@@NurseLiz In Childrens hospital as a bedside nurse. But all the vitals are being checked by the nurse helpers and given to nurses afterwards. We also have only electronical devices to check pulse and heart pressure.
As a medic in the army we definitely wear our stethoscopes around our necks, if you put it down it’s gone for ever lol.

Best of luck and hope you find a solution that works!
Really helpful 😀
Is the NP binder suitable for PAs? Thank you
if you are in primary care for sure!
I do wear mine around my neck! lol Thanks for the recommendations! :)
Hadn't even thought about how ambient noise could affect a decision! Thanks for the info!
Hi! Late to the party, but, I was wondering if you recommend a Cardiology IV for a pediatric nurse?
I've never tried others, but American Medical Supply has some affordable ones on amazon!
Thank you!
Only were it on my neck after I use it so I don’t set it down and forget it.
I like the overall video but saying that a nurse doesn’t need a cardiology iv because they don’t need to diagnose lung sounds or heart tones is a pretty closed minded view. Why would a nurse not want the best tool for the job, that will ultimately get the correct treatment faster?
Paramedic here. If my scope is not around my neck then I don’t have my scope cause I’m gonna forget it somewhere
In my nursing school they told us not to wear the stethoscope around our necks because the patient could choke you with it.... that always stuck with me and I like to keep it in my pocket lol
oh wow yikes! That would stick with me too
Working on ambulance yes around my neck unless psych patients then stuffed in pants pocket.
17 yo cna here i def wear it around my neck
Cold hearted test
My stethoscope
is usually hanging from my wheelie. LOL
Oy! Belt clips are great if you work on an ambulance :) Don't be so negative about them ;P
Bruh a stethoscope weighs like 1gm..
Not a single nurse wears a stethoscope in my clinic. It's for doctors.
Where do you work?? That’s wild
@@NurseLiz In Childrens hospital as a bedside nurse. But all the vitals are being checked by the nurse helpers and given to nurses afterwards. We also have only electronical devices to check pulse and heart pressure.
Just out of interest, what does a nurse need a stethoscope for?:)
Too much caffeine..!😂😂
no such thing!
You are too nervous my dear to teach slow down so we can digest what you are saying slow down
My GOD get to the point!
