To those wondering how UY Scuti got its name: UY Scuti was discovered in the 1860s and was found to be a variable star (one that changes brightness), so it is subject to variable star designations. "Scuti" means that the star is in the constellation of Scutum (Latin for "shield"), and "UY" means that it is the 38th discovered variable star in the constellation. So putting it all together, UY Scuti's name literally means "38th known variable star in Scutum."

every astronomer ever: wait until you see the amount of empty space the universe has!
The scale of individual objects isn’t what makes space hard. It’s the horrifying distances between them.
and then math is like far and away larger.
...and also infinitely smaller.
If you want to see all of the empty space look at the map “if the moon was 1 pixel” it’s so impressive
An approximation I recently read is that all mass in the universe is the equivalent to putting 2 watermelons in the sun

UY Scuti: I'm the biggest star!
Stephenson 2-18: Hello.
As impressive as the scale of astronomical objects are, they're nothing compared to the scale of astronomical distances
Fk man you blew my mind
Astronomical distance?? Why not the edge of the universe?? It's so away that light haven't reached us yet since the universe is born!!! That's more than 13 billion years the age of universe, and that mean the edge is more than 13 billion light years away!!!
@Corby Dorian yeah that's what i mean, it's far away more than the age of universe itself. That's why we don't see it or know what it is, because it's more than 13.5 billion light years away.
I kept it together, until I tried thinking of the huge massive void, between galaxies. Where there is nothing. And THEN, you ponder the "deep field" photograph that Hubble took... all those galaxies, in one picture..... AND THEN, you realize that picture was hubble focused on one tiny point in the sky, for like 12 days... My brain just shut down aga
@@ckmoore101 there's a Void called supervoid and it's as big as 10,000 galaxies!!! Imagine that.
When he says it’s going to go supernova soon, 1 million years.
That’s pretty short
FriedBeef26 that is extremely soon.
