  • Libertarians and conservatives alike claim to be advocates of individual liberty, limited government, and free markets. In some policy spheres, these shared values lead libertarians and conservatives to similar conclusions about public policy. As a result, popular political discourse often conflates libertarianism with conservatism, and proponents of “fusionism” go so far as to regard a libertarian-conservative alliance as being both natural and politically useful.
However, the differences between the two political philosophies are at least as significant as the similarities. On matters such as national security and foreign policy, immigration, criminal justice, drugs, surveillance, marriage and the family, and the role of religion in public policy, libertarians and conservatives often clash with one another.
Despite whatever similarities they may have, libertarianism and conservatism are substantially different political philosophies. So which one provides better answers to today’s most important political questions?
We invite you to a debate about the two political philosophies and their associated policy implications. Interns from the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation will go head-to-head to answer the question: Do Libertarians or Conservatives propose more effective solutions to public policy issues?

I feel like Heritage was debating ghosts, while Cato actually debated the people on stage.
The difficulty Conservatives have with understanding Libertarianism is that Libertarianism is so broad and leaves much room for debate outside of the necessities. In truth, Libertarianism has very little to say on Abortion as is. The discussion on whether or not murder should be legal, however? And so for Libertarians, the discussion isn't whether or not Abortion should be legal, but rather: Is Abortion murder?
Cato guys did amazing. Was very impressed. Gives me hope for the future

52:20 Misquoting the declaration of independence to cut out reference to god when debating conservatives is a bold and ill advised move.

I think a libertarian should also want social change. As we can all make more money if we're all making money. Reaganomics is the base for this. He started from top to bottom when it should be bottom to top. A strong foundation hold's up everything else.

Why dont they debate the real topic? How to pull as much money for your halfbaked ideas from rich donors. Thats all this "Institute", abusing the name of Cato, stands for.
