    Nice to see a tube project. I started building tube amps 50 years ago as all I could get were obsolete tube radios for parts. I studied electronics at university and have moved on the transistors, microcontrollers etc, but still build high end tube amps because of the fantastic audio quality. Your preamp is distorting the sound, which is useful for a guitar amp, but not for audio.... It would be interesting to see you build a stereo tube amp with one double triode (e.g. ECC82) as a pre stage and two power pentodes (e.g. EL84) as end stage. Very simple, but a good design will provide a wonderful 2x4 Watts, which is plenty for just listening to music.

    This is what I have noticed with tube vs solid state. A 50 watt tube amp has way more punch and clarity than a 50 watt solid state amp. Also if you turn a solid state amp all the the way up it will start to distort at some point. The ic/transistor will get saturated with heat faster than the heat sink can remove it, maybe what you might call heat inertia. As for a vacuum tube based amp this phenomenon does not occur. As a matter of fact tubes need heat to function. When reaching a point of peak power you can listen all day long, no distortion.
    When the amp hits the point of distortion/saturation, it is alot softer on the ears. Electric Guitarist love this type distortion or overdrive. Good video man. Keep up the good work.

    • @kennmossman8701
      @kennmossman8701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any amp will distort but tubes distort with even harmonics whereas transistors distort with odd harmonics which are unpleasant to the ear. So don't overdrive

    • @kennmossman8701
      @kennmossman8701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I doubt it is fair to make such sweeping generalizations. For transistors you have class A, B, AB, and D. Then there are different approaches in feedback. Then there are different driver configurations, etc

    • @kennmossman8701
      @kennmossman8701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the path from mic to media is packed with transistors saying transistors sound bad it like saying you don't like sugar in your cereal while eating Frosted Flakes

    • @kennmossman8701
      @kennmossman8701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that heat inertia is called thermal lag. Since hFE varies by Tj it might appear a factor but this doesn't apply to class A and minimally in class D. Moreover it would indicate poor design as hFE does vary by transistor [and other factors]. Since feedback somewhat depends on hFE it is more likely the sound improves in the situation you gave

    Disculpa, viendo tu esquemático, tengo duda con el capacitor C13, el que está a la salida de los pines para los calefactores. Es mi idea o en el esquemático aparece invertida su polaridad, ya que estás conectando su terminal positiva a GND. Por cierto, como siempre un excelente trabajo de diseño y divulgación para tus proyectos. Muchas felicidades.

    Pity about the stupid blue leds on the tubes. If you really have to, orange or red ones look way more appropriate. Nice video anyway. :-) BTW, if you really want to make an impressive video about your planned tube power amp, make a hybrid tube/MOSFET one. That's something a lot of folks will appreciate!

    with today's digital tv, where clean, low-noise, low-distortion tv signals are required, it would be ideal to have a tube preamplifier for tv antennas enclosed in a metal to provide shielding against outside interference in a case with 75 ohm coax input and output: radio shack had some in the 1960's, but they are needed because tv signals nowadays go to a complex decoding system because of the signal compression. I do not know what specific types of vacuum tubes were made for 40 megahertz to 890 megahertz amplification, nor do I know how to look up the older technology. Do you know how to look that information up? I am aware that vacuum tubes produce very good low harmonic distortion audio sound, so all I would have to do is hook up a 75ohm coax input and 75 ohm output, make sure I use the correct type of tubes, and have the correct capacitor values, because of the much higher frequencies being amplified, 30db gain = 1024 times the signal input, with low impedance input so it would amplify the weak signals cleanly Brian Nowak

    I've built something similar for a guitar amp using similar pre-made pre-amps. Swapping in a 500k-1M input pot to give the higher input impedance a guitar needs.
    One warning if you make a single power supply from a 12v x-former, bridge rectifier and filter caps. Tapping the pre-amp ac before the rectifier, power amp dc after. In this case the "grounds" on the pre-amp and amp will be at different potentials. So you'll need to connect the pre-amp to amp via a small audio transformer. Otherwise you'll let the magic smoke out somewhere. :) Fortunately, in my case it was in the interconnect wires that fried.
    For more features, you can add a tone stack between the pre-amp and amp after the x-former. Also since for a guitar you only need one channel of a stereo pre-amp, you can leverage the fact these 6N1 tubes vary highly in quality. With some of them distorting much more than others. But distortion is good for a guitar! So put a clean tube in one channel, a distorting tube in the other and a toggle switch to select which one feeds the power amp!

    Vacuum tubes have their own noise and are not perfect, transistors and ICs have their own noise too, acoustics + electronics have only one solution to reduce this problem to a desired level and the process is not simple because imply knowledge of the characteristics of the use of materials and size of the speakers and their housings, the texture and hardiness/ softness of surfaces where the sound bounce and the power output to move the air.(note: perfect sound does not exist.)
