    Thanks Tim and Zach! Full of information! Thanks!!! So hardies grow horizontally. I wondered what the true differences were between hardies and tropicals. It is good to know that 12/20/8 is the best fertilizer and not to cover the crown when repotting. I live in an area of "thin" soil, the Texas Hill Country so I get soil from my daughter's in the Blackland Prairie. We have lots of rocks. I would need a few large rocks because my Koi are naughty.

    Just got a hardy blue Lilly from amazon. Planted it in a pot that’s probably too small, I’ll have to change that in the next couple days.
    My pond is just a 2x1x6 100g stock tank buried in the ground, which pumps up to a preformed pond liner about 40g that has a spillway back to the stock tank. In the top preformed tier of the pond, I have some elephants ear, some horsetail, and some creeping Jenny planted as emergents along the edge where there’s a small rim/ledge for planting. In the water is a ton of hornwort that grew from one little tiny piece I collected a month ago.
    The “pond” is for my 4 ducks, and they use the crap out of it, literally. I have gotten rid of the green water by using the plants, and I do water changes as needed. The water is VERY nutrient rich, probably mostly N.
    I’m hoping my new Lilly survives this environment, I used one of my bonsai pots that has a grated bottom, and it’s planted in pea gravel mixed with 1/8” lava rock bits. Now I’ll change to a longer cat pan I have.

    I thought planting waterlily is a hard thing to do. With these few tips you shared, everyone can now plant their own lilies. I just hope that the fertilizer you presented is not very expensive. Is there any alternative or organic fertilizer to be used growing waterlilies?

    I filled the cat litter with top soil and did everything you recommended but the moment I put the box in the water (slowly) it bobbed up dispersing all the soil. What did I do wrong? Did you have drainage holes in the box? Also, I have 4 different kinds of hardy water lily. Can I place them on the same side or do I put them in different corners? Thanks!

    How do you keep the dirt from making a big mess? Everytime I seem to add a pot to the pond the dirt just wants to float away and make a huge mess, that's why I normally put gravel on top. I would rather not and just do soil but don't want a mess. Any suggestions?

    • @pondmegastore

      They are heavy feeders. They do not grow in gravel in nature. Very bad pond installers do this especially when trying to add koi.

    I ordered 6 hardy lillies from Cali and im in CT. Temps arent too warm yet will my lillies be ok? (Just worried about the temperature differences from cali to here) 3 of them are too short and havent broken to the surface yet. About 3-6 inches under water. And they are currently ontop of cinder blocks too.. will they be ok? Ordered them from j&j because they sell pretreated plants (no disease or parasites-yay lol)

    Once it is potted up, since this has a flower head on it, can you put it in the pond such that the flower head us submersed (ie, in the place you want it) or do you have to stage it in shallower water first? Thanks.

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If a plant has a flower when transplanted that flower will go limp and may or may not open during transplant shock. Never fear though lilies properly planted should bloom almost daily so after 3-4 weeks on a hardy or less than a week on a tropical they are back to flowering like normal.

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See other reply first.... second place in shallow water 6 inches or so to the surface until the transplant is well rooted. You cannot choose the position of the flower. Just the pot.

      @pondmegastore  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The soil should be fine but you will need to add more each year when dividing eventually the plant will use a lot of the mass. We have seen some plants in pots float they have used so much soil after a year or two

  • @rrekarat
    @rrekarat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    How deep do you place the pan? I.e., where should the water line fall relative to the pan?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Small varieties of water lilies a foot above the soil. Larger varieties handle 2 or 3 feet but will grow slower and flower less the deeper water due to less sun at the crown and more energy needed to put up leaves and flowers. One foot or so on any size will give you the most flowers as will full direct sunlight.

    is the substrate a combo of cat litter and potting soil?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not putting soil but top soil. Potting soil will float and rot in water. Play sand is a great third element.

    Can you use fluval stratum to plant water lilies? I've been asking around but nobody either seems to know or if they do not answering.

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well they are heavy feeders and if you want them to bloom properly/profusely which I am guessing is Not the goal yes. If you want lots of flowers plant them properly. They will meander and sustain themselves in that medium but I am not sure you plant to fertilize as I don't think heavy fertilizer would bind and stay there rather than leeching out

    • @pondmegastore

      They need dirt. Pots are for rubber lined and concrete ponds with no soil at the bottom.

    What about pea gravel for top dress?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pea gravel will have a % mortality/death. We do not suggest pea gravel. Some plants live many die or are stunted by such unnatural growing conditions. Too often people look at plants that survive and expect all to survive.

      If you already have some in front of house, dont use those. Get you some different ones that you will enjoy more. This time of yr at Lowes, sometimes walmart, they have them for ten dollars. Plus, lilys come in small, medium, and large so get you a smaller variety for your container. Should be easy to harvest the ones youve already got though, just climb in there with a knife and chop off a crown with roots like he had in video.

    I hear if you plant them facing wall of tub, about two inches away from tub wall, then it depends it's energy in making more flowers rather than making tuber. So if you want to make long tuber, plant it away from wall, and if you want more flowers then plant it facing the tub wall. Your inputs please

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, mention the source for that and how that makes sense. They can perish growing into the wall depending if they curl down and suffocate , if they turn into the wall and retard, or jump the pot and grow out into the bottom of the pond. Please explain what scientific reason they would bloom more growing into the wall.

    can I use organic top soil?

    • @pondmegastore
      @pondmegastore  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Organic material that is not completely broken down will become a tea for nutrients to foul the water. Most important thing is items decomposing is not the majority of the soil or you are just looking for an algae bloom. Clay should be at least 1/3 of the loam mix.
