I’d like to say here that yes, Epic and the Odyssey are different, but this is simply my interpretation of these events. I also plan on doing “Not Sorry For Loving You” please be respectful 🙏 both the songs and the art are made by people who just like Greek mythology and want to experiment with it.

I actually love how you managed to contrast both what happened in the Odyssey and in Epic, because I've seen many people saying that Odysseus was indeed unfaithful to Penelope because in the Odyssey he did have intimacy with Calypso but I have seen that they do not consider that practically Odysseus was a victim of SA during his stay on the island and as a phrase tell (I do not remember the author) "Odysseus did not have lovers, but abusers" and I love how you balanced the Odyssey and the canon in Epic 😁

I’m so glad to see people making Calypso looking genuinely scary! She looks psychotic, and that perfectly represents how she’s treating the situation. She’s desperate yes, but she knows what she’s doing, and That adds so much more effect when she looks threatening. Aside from Calypso everything else looks great as well! Ody looks scared and desperate for an escape which I’m glad was portrayed well too!

I love how…Dismissive Calypso is of Odysseus throughout this whole animatic. She is constantly in his space and is trying to touch him all the time. She refuses to respect his space and just wants to always be touching him despite his protest. Even when he literally trying to end his life, she is basically dragging him away. Which isn’t a good idea since he literally having a full PTSD episode. She’s not dragging him away because she doesn’t want to see him get hurt but so she won’t be alone. Her motives save Odysseus is purely selfish, while she did a good thing keeping him alive, he still isn’t happy because he is still trapped there. I love how complex she is despite the horrible things she has done to Odysseus.
I also love the little hint that she isn’t happy to be stuck on the island. Calypso is horrible for forcing herself and trapping Odysseus there. Nothing in her past can justify what she has done to Odysseus but she does have a past. She’s a terrible person but you can feel a little bad for her. She’s also stuck on this island and doesn’t want to be alone. However she will do whatever she can to not be alone, even if it hurts Odysseus because she is more focused on loving the idea of Odysseus not of Odysseus himself as a person.
This is a such interesting way of portraying Calypso, giving her layers despite the horrible thing she has done. I love this animatic is basically what I am saying.

@@ThePen214 honestly this is probably my favorite portrayal of Calypso and Odysseus without minimizing the others story. I feel people believe they have to “pick a side” when it comes to their dynamic. While Calypso is obliviously in the wrong that doesn’t mean she isn’t complex.
I hate her with every fiber of my being but she is such an interesting person. Odysseus’s relationship with her is also interesting to me. While yes she does abuse him, he can feel bad for her. He was with her for 7 years and it’s really hard to not form some kind of bond with someone. It’s not healthy at all but it’s some kind of connection Odysseus would form.
It’s all so interesting and this animatic truly does justice how layered their story together is. I honestly wish more people did this, it allows for more conversations about them. Again, Calypso is obliviously a terrible person and no one should undermine that but she is still has layers that add to her actions. Which I feel this animatic does justice. Not painting her is so naive of her actions but also isn’t completely villainous either. It makes “Not Sorry for Loving You” have new layers too. Honestly that’s just amazing storytelling on your end 💜💜💜

One way I also see It is that if Calypso did get cast away to this island when she was very young she would not know how to be with people or what are boundaries. And 100 years of complete isolation would have starved her of physical Contact and affection. Add to that she's an inmortal goddess with power and she holds the power in her dynamic with Ody.
Imo its a case of a victim (of neglet) becoming a victimizer (a self absorbed abuser). Of course she could be lying about the whole thing, but with no hints about the contrary, It seems that may be the truth. Doesnt justify the abuse though

      lore accurate Calypso be like.
I love this take tbh. Also I felt like the song was too "short" given how the timeskip works is very fast and sudden. But with the implied SA, it's perfectly paced. "Youre mine all mine" was the last thing Calypso said before we cut to Athena who's seeing all of this happen as she goes through it. It also just feels so perfectly tragic for both parties. In a way this was a cruel divine punishment on Odysseus and Calypso with Calypso taking advantage of Ody in a situation he truly has no agency. Even freedom in death is denied so all he has is misery. And this animatic might be the first one I've seen Athena cry because she saw how Odysseus got taken advantage of for 7 years straight and how awful it would be to the psyche

1:42 When I saw this part my mind immediately jumped to that part in the Odyssey (can’t remember the exact quote) that said that every night Calypso would force Odysseus to sleep with her, and every morning he would go and sit on that cliff and stare at the horizon, hoping for a glimpse of smoke from Ithaca, think about his wife, and cry. All day. For seven years. 😬
That’s not what’s happening in that frame, but the feeling is all there. This animatic really captures the feeling that I had when I read the parts with Calypso in the Odyssey (I reeeeeally don’t understand how some can feel bad for her)
Fun fact: There’s another part where Hermes comes to tell Calypso to set Odysseus free and she’s like “What?? Why don’t you approve of our relationship?? Is it because he’s mortal? Omg, you gods are scandalized so easilyyy” and he’s like “ummm no, that’s not why we don’t approve, can’t you see, he’s CLEARLY unhappy *gesturing to the crying Odysseus sitting on the cliff edge*” and she’s like “UGGGGGGHHHHHH fine”

It is a good thing that the Calypso in Epic is supposed to be different from that with her not SAing Ody, since thatd probably be a bit --too- much for the musical and would make NSFLY not work at all, but its really interesting to see someone tackle this version of her. Something that always gets me with this song is how much raw emotion is in part "just let me close my eyes." There's so much emotion throughout the song, especially in the last part but this here hurts so much, because he's haunted by the nightmares. He's just sounds so utterly tired. I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't gotten a decent night's rest because of this and frankly, probably hasn't got mental break from it either. All he wants is for the pain to stop and to go back to his family, but he can't because he's literally trapped there and is r**ed by this woman for literal YEARS. He is desperate to get home, but he can't so he just wants to end it all. This animatic honestly hits so much harder. Not taking away any credit from the others at all, but the animator definitely took a different approach and put a lot of attention to detail.

Greek Mythos nerd alert (trigger warning as well):
It's implied in Epic, but in the original this happened nearly every night, and he would spend the day at the shores of Ogygia crying. the wording is different across different translations but it's always explicit about it. The sadist part it Calypso didn't even see him as an equal, didn't see anything wrong with it. When uh- *things happen in the texts I wont say for possible spoilers* She actually gets upset and starts ranting about how the Gods are just jealous and hate seeing her, a Goddess, with a mortal man- going as far to say that she has actually tried to make him immortal- and calls him a "poor creature" in some translations. Circe in the original texts was messed up- but no where near to the levels at what happened between Odysseus and Calypso. Not only was this a near nightly thing for 7 years but the guy couldn't trust anything she gave him because she tried to give him Ambrosia so he couldn't even die.
tl;dr Calypso in the original is messed up and I need to touch grass or something-

@@Gh0stlyfool I know the og texts, and honestly, it make me really annoyed with those stories that say Odysseus cheated with Calypso.
Odysseus was a ruthless bastard, but he was as much the goddess' victim as Pasiphae was victim of Poseidon's wrath.

@@fandemusique4693 If there’s a Greek story with a mortal and a God in the mix 95% of the time the mortal is a victim. (The other 5% is Sisyphus, Tantalus, Pirithous, and Narcissus)
Odysseus’ situation especially just feels a certain brand of awful, idk how people can take it and say he cheated

@@villanlover58 for me (even tho I love Mr Jalapeño) I like combining the original events of the story and EPIC. Something I’ve always loved about the Odyssey is how it does portray Ody as a victim of assault. Even though it’s centuries old.

Well the original will always have it’s meaning although in the god games Athena said he never cheated but Hera would see any form of intimacy as cheating so it can be confusing for what epic is doing

there are only 3 songs that you can actively consider there is any aspect that can end up with SA, so not really that many. it’s a 40:3 ratio of songs to songs containing possible attempted SA (“There are Other Ways” which it doesn’t happen and as much as it is coerced, consent is waited for. “Love In Paradise” is controversial in EPIC itself the intention of what Calypso is obviously. it isn’t as explicitly said so you can see it as not SA. Last is “Hold Them Down” which yeah, you’re right it’s REALLY explicit than reinforced and “Odysseus”

I would have never dared to draw Calypso asaulting Ody, I command you for that's. It's brave in it's own way and is probably the most accurate depiction of what when on in the EPIC version accroding to this song.
I made Ody waaaay weaker than this is mine, and I'm so glad we can have so many readings of the same song, the same myth, and the same story. None of them are wrong, and everything is right to tell. Albeit I was more interested in Ody's guilt ruining an immortal godess attempt at saving his life and becoming controlling and desperate rather than dellusionnal, but your's is truer to the lyrics, I think.
This is a horrible fate for him. A horrible fate for anyone. And I'm glad you didn't back off of it.
I had students how commited SA on their partner without realizing it, and refusing to associate themself with the idea. They are responsible. I don't believe in retribution but I know victims will live with it their whole life, and they just have to carry it with them too. I just hope, victim and perpetrator alike, that they can get up and make it part of their journey, and not their whole. Not denying it. Not being defined by it. Talk about it. About the scars, the consent, the listening that didn't happened. The love that went nowhere. The pain. The right to make mistakes, the right to stop anywhere you want. The honor to recognize the pain you carved in someone and knowing those king of things can't be taken back. Why it is so import that we just talk about it.
