I pulled the audio clip from "Big Red Sun". The entire clip is interesting and I recommend a listen even though its topic is a bit different than the content in this video.

If you like this video, read Wallace's "E Pluribus Unum: Television and fiction." It is dense. But dang it----------the essay goes into how television and film makes us self-conscious in an unhealthy way. He wrote the essay in 1990.

I love how Wallace points out that the downsides of being self-conscious and how television spreads that. Such a key concept.

What this social media vanity apocalypse has exposed is the shallowness of our "adult" culture. The loss of elders voices is going to be the death knell of civilization. No more need or interest in wisdom nor in attaining it. No one admires or respects others for honourable reasons anymore. It's not like all people always did but I don't think we realize how much "pillars" in our families and communities were actually partly holding up the whole operation. Erase meaningful people in our lives and erase life. It's happening right before our eyes, who doesn't think the cut of adult hasn't obviously changed since the introduction of iphones/androids? Watching senior citizens be as equally shallow and amazed by the gadgets in their hands as 5 and 8 year olds has been a shitty lesson to learn.
God is present at the movies. What gets me is the circle. Sometimes fame acts like a middle ground that can illicit responses. That is something only money can buy.
0:49 they're not faking surprise, haha...what they say might be prepared, but they want to win, don't know if they will, are nervous about it, haha, etc...I have on occasion wondered why they care, but still...I think most people would, in their shoes...but when you think about what it is...even people who acknowledge the bias, politics, etc, seem to care, in spite of what they say (example: Joaquin Phoenix...criticizing award shows in general, even if acknowledging the importance to help some unknown filmmakers...I think he cares/cared, despite anything he said, etc...Brad Pitt seemed less concerned, at any rate, haha)...many things might be fake about it, but they're not faking surprise, etc...nor faking desire for it, etc...and I think most acknowledge said desire...only a few will claim not to want one, etc...

Haha...part of the reason it is taken more seriously than things like "teen choice awards" and stuff like that is precisely because it's the industry congratulating itself...hell, that would go for anything...being recognized by your peers is better than being recognized by outsiders because your peers know better than outsiders...
Well...the Golden Globes are a contradiction to that, but still...some have criticized them partially for that, like Gary Oldman, I think, but still...journalists are a step up from complete outsiders, like critics would be, one could argue...
If mathematicians acknowledge the genius of another mathematician, we take it more seriously than if random people do...same goes for any other field...you need a given field to "congratulate itself", haha...

Art makes life worth living, but worshipping at the altar of celebrity sucks. 99 percent of the content put out by Hollywood is mediocre at best.
@Tara Chew I don’t entirely agree with you on that. The Hollywood studio system has put out many amazing artistic films, but you have to cull through a plethora of mediocrity.
@Tara Chew I wouldn’t go that far. There are many films made in the last 20-30 years that quality as high art with directors including Darren Aronofsky, Jane Champion, Barry Jenkins, David Fincher, Wes Anderson. I could go on. The films are there, but you have to wade through the Marvel crap to find them.
@Tara Chew I don’t disagree with your premise that Hollywood creativity is in decline, but you can’t make a blanket claim that nothing masterful has been created since 1985. Art is a precursor and reflection of what’s going on in the world and oftentimes society needs time to catch up. We are so busy living through the day-to-dayness of our tiny lives that we can’t see the bigger picture, which is why you need to allow a film time to age. And I respectfully disagree about Fincher. Fight Club, for example, didn’t make an impression on me back in 1998, but watching it almost 25 years later - wow. We couldn’t possibly know back then that it would be modern cinema’s last look at traditional masculinity. And it’s especially relevant now post #MeToo and the ongoing debates about gender fluidity.
@Tara Chew Why do you have to insult me? We are in agreement, but your support of Hollywood ended about three decades before mine. You’re entitled to your opinion, great, have at it. And I haven’t fallen under the spell of MSM; if anything, my support of Fight Club shows that I’m mourning the loss of gender norms and haven’t embraced anyone’s woke agenda. I love good cinema, but he's right about the award ceremonies, the hypocrisy on display and the joy being absent. I never watch these things as they are also boring to watch, everyone all awkward and stiff.

I like DFW but this is a really cynical viewpoint that pretty much dismisses the entire art form of acting which surprises me coming from him that he wouldn't be able to see that many people on that stage have put their heart and soul into what they do and are genuine in their intent and gratitude, I can't imagine he would say these same things about writers who receive awards
It's not a dismissal of acting or movies. It's a criticism of the awards show and part of a criticism of us, who engage with it instead of our real lives.
I think he would have felt deeply uncomfortable at a writers' awards show. That's not the same as writers receiving awards.

I see a lot of comments here criticizing filmmakers and actors for giving themselves awards. But who is better qualified to judge the merits of the art than them?
If a pilot wins "pilot of the year" then you assume that most of the people who gave them that award know their way around an airplane.
And besides, we have People's Choice Awards and whatnot and they tend to pick more mediocre stuff than the Oscars do.
Exactly, if American film viewers were the judges, "Ultra-Patriotic Aryan-American Eagle Warrior: Part (x) the verb(+ing)" would win every year.

I feel like this video is disregarding the amazing and challenging work these people have done. Most oscar nominations are amazing pieces of art IMO they deserve to get the recognition. Anyone who makes movie knows how hard it is. Having said that, there is a lot that can be improved in this industry.

Whether or not people choose to watch these self congratulatory programs, they will continue to inundate the cable and satellite systems that bring us our electronic pablum. Much like the dramatic loss of market share experienced by sources like CNN, these shows seem to chug along regardless of the dwindling audience.

In fact, I would call his take on the industry is reserved for a greater conversation. Which it is; this is a snippet of a more than two hour prose about the adult film industry.
His take on Hollywood serves only as a sounding board as to how AVN is even more of a zoo. So many of the stories that we've heard this industry- heresay and vindicated, has dwarfed what ever daring quality you might see from dedicated filmmakers and actors.
The product of such an industry has fueled the narcissism that comes from being lauded and being paid for looking good instead of being good. Like You and I acknowledged before, there are talented men and women in the industry, yet the amount of lives chewed up and spit out form this business does not give not give reflect on the talent of the actors, directors, producers, etc. It reflects the inherent sin that comes from vanity, greed, and lust.
@@feralmode I guess your judgement on his predisposition is on the money. Like I said in my last post there are talented artisans in the industry. In fact, I go further and would say there are a lot of talented people in a capitalist system. But, as you alluded to late stage capitalism is solely focused on growth which is why we have a lot of talent behind transformers or star wars. Overall, I think you're right about the craft, but the overall structure of the film industry in respect to its arc is dysfunctional and unsustainable.

Plus, there are phonies and genuine people in every industry. Just because J.K. Rowling is a terrible hypocrite, by the transitive property, that doesn't just suddenly make Fiction writing hypocritical or David Foster Wallace's Infinite Jest less grand. He's obviously someone who can only see the grand scope of Hollywood instead of filtering out the actual incredible work that a select bunch of artists are doing in the film industry. He doesn't view writing this way because, well, he's in the writing business, and if he is in it as one of the representers, and believes he is a genuine soul, then he will find that writing is a genuine profession. In reality, there are phonies and genuine artists in every profession. It takes a genuine person to sift them out. David Foster Wallace has even praised David Lynch before as his favorite film maker. So while, maybe award shows are a little bogged down in self-indulgence, he calls the elements of film, "not an art form," Yet he praises the movie Blue Velvet. Turns out there's a little hypocrite in all of us, even DFW.

i don’t mind David Foster Wallace’s words on the academy awards, but what i do mind is the creator of this video’s choice to use his commentary and put it over carefully selected clips of democratic or left leaning figures in entertainment. it makes the whole video have this smugly political angle that doesn’t seem to actually be that connected to the audio clip in use. i also don’t get how someone who supports trump could listen to this and be like “yes this is where the corruption lies.”
that’s kind of besides the point but this video was so self contradictory that some guy wrote a whole essay on it instead of doing anything else. i think that says something but it’s 2 in the morning and i’m already regretting commenting on a david foster wallace video.
