I hope if they shorten the training pipeline that I get in before that happens. When the flag goes up I'd rather have the problem of overtrained as opposed to undertrained.

When i was learning to fly, GPS was taking off. All my instructor would say before people bought (then) expensive GPS units "what if it fails?"

B.L.U.F., it always breaks. When I flew the OH-58D (really old technology) every flight contained at least one person saying “F it, we’ll troubleshoot it en-route / Does your radio work? / Does your sight work?”. And every single flight ended with a write up for maintenance. It made us really good at making do with what we had. And now flying HEMS in the civilian sector I still fly like a pessimist. Stuff will always break.

Our GPS satellite network is not guaranteed. Anti-satellite weaponry continues to become more sophisticated and numerous. We have to be able to perform in a world without GPS. We have to be able to perform in a world where we might be unable to replace complex avionics simply because they might be too expensive to replace. So much of our fancy tech is dependent on rare resources and manufacturing in countries that are not guaranteed to stay friendly with us. The future is uncertain these days. We may end up having to dramatically cut back on military just to keep the country afloat. The military needs to be able to perform on a dramatically cut back barebones budget. Right now the military is ridiculously dependent on super expensive hard to manufacture toys that are largely if not totally untested in a real war between relevant powers. Even in our anti-terror war, a $20 investment by the enemy would cost us millions of dollars. That's why it cost us trillions of dollars to fight an enemy with a tiny shoestring budget.

Never heard of anybody OVER trained on ANYTHING. Training is what you fall back on when all these "gee whiz" automatic systems..........don't. There is nothing fail safe. Just fail resistant. You get those kids out there that don't know anything other than automatic, and it goes south, and the body count is gonna be HIGH

The author sounds like someone who places numbers over people, which is something that is WAY too prevalent in today's government and leadership. What are the odds that your equipment will break down? Probably extremely small, but if you're the unlucky one it happens to the numbers don't really matter anymore. Wouldn't it be nice to have the training to overcome that failure rather than just having to learn on the fly while you're trying to land on a pitching deck? My motto is ALWAYS better to have and not need than to need and not have.

How The Hell Do You Overtrain Someone flying a Mach-Plus Heavily Armed Fighter Plane? it would seem to me they should get the MOST training aviators can get! That way simple mistakes can be corrected and pilots can catch a problem and be ready to deal with it. That way The Air Force and Fleet loses Less Aviators and Aircraft. And One Should Never Ever Expect Technology to work 100% of the time. Always learn to do it manually because the situation will eventually arise when you HAVE to do things manually.

First time listener Old time Lexington 80's sailor when there wasn't any of this technology.
My opinion is every dollar spent training is well spent and train for all scenarios starting with stick and rudder flying.
Technology is for reducing stress on the pilot but he better know what to do if all that crap fails.

Gonky, I was watching this episode last Monday night and I was saying Yes, Yes, Yes! You guys were spot on. Magic Carpet, now Precision Landing Mode (PLM) is now the norm and What happens when Murphy or ECM hits?????? No answer from the leaders at the last Tailhook. Clueless! Who can fly the Ball anymore, I ask Wombat? Break.. It was a S-2 that launched into the wave on the bow pic. Break, Once, the shooter launched me into a thunderstorm which I finally broke out of at 2500 ft on the other side. I was the first tanker off. Good thing as I had plenty of gas to recover after flying around the T-Storm as the launch was suspended for an hour. TINS tale, Pete.

@@dutchbrotherfan1284 Sorry, was not me in that S-2, I was trying to tell Gonky the a/c in the video was an S-2. Was trying to cover too much info in the post. What I described was a CAT shot in an A-4 Skyhawk into a very bad rainstorm. Instant IMC at 100 feet! Just got on instruments and climbed at 15 degrees nose up; kept climbing and giving the strike controllers my altitude until I broke out.

I am assuming the "Magic Carpet" system relies on electronic emissions. So what happens when you have to go into some sort of EMCON configuration what would restrict that system? Or there is a degraded environment?

Fail safe? We’re talking about combat aircraft here. You need to be prepared to bring back aircraft that have been shot up. It’s a near certainty that you’ll lose these systems or that you’ll need to shut them off because they will be unable to compensate for inoperative or missing control surfaces, stabilizers etc.
automation is great until it’s been shot out from under you - then all you have to fall back on is airmanship.

First timer, friend sent me the link. I come out of the steam-age (Whales & A-6s) and some stuff never changes: Stuff always breaks. "Streamlining" is usually a Bean-Counter buzzword for "We're taking more money away from you," and inevitably, the mishap rate goes up. Gee, I wonder why? Yes, the T-45C is old, old, old. But, it's great for teaching those "Laws of Primacy" fundamentals we all fall back on when *nothing* is working right. The PTR is a direct function of strangling the CNATRA budget across the board. More $$$$, more IPs, more OPTAR/Maintenance $$$$$ and the PTR goes up. Funny thing about that. Anyway, keep on preaching it, you're not wrong! (I'm agnostic on the "No CQ until RAG" concept the Good Idea Fairy has dropped on NAVAIR. We need about 36 months of evidence, then track the FRS 1st CQ'ers through their Nugget tours. i.e. Prove it)

Face it: people don't WANT to join the military anymore
    Same over here in Europe
Belgium recently lowered its medical acceptance standards for mil pilot trainees to get enough candidates
We only got under 50 F-16s flying (out of 160), with only 34 F-35A coming in
Despite having gained over 2 million additional inhabitants since the days when we had hundreds of pilots to fly hundreds of planes :
112 Starfighters + 88 Mirages ; or 200 Thunderstreaks ; or 190 Hunters - all in addition to in house training (now outsourced) planes & transports
