As an Italian that season I started with chearing Fabrizio, but Spies soon took my heart. What a beast, came outta nowhere, won, left. Absolute madlad.
Ben is one of the greatest Superbike racers ever! He went to wsb switched brands of bike, different brand of tires, and on tracks he had never seen before, and won his first year!! Even after several dnfs, blown engine, tire came apart, etc. On a bike that had not won one race before.
I have watched Ben Spies since he was a teenager racing AMA 750 Supersport back in the late 90's... this guy has a separate trailer to carry his bollox in.... He is the best superbike rider on the planet right now.
Every race with Ben Spies is a great race. This WSBK championship was the best year since Colin got the best of Bayliss on the RC51. What a great rider, team, and bike... Miss you Ben!!
You almost have to feel bad for Haga, getting older on one of the best bikes that season, never had a championship. It looked like his year, then Ben comes along.
Probably one of Ben's best moments. He truly shined using those 'Elbowz' here. .. sad he is lost to racing with his shoulder injury. Ben, you could fn ride man!
Ahh, the memories. This was a fun season to watch and Ben's career was just taking off. Had it not been for so many mechanical issues and crashes, he probably would have clinched the championship with a several races left. Too bad he never reached his potential in MotoGP. He was very good and beat Simoncelli and Dovi regularly, but he just couldn't keep up with the aliens. Plus, his relationship with Lin Jarvis was, flat out, toxic and nothing he did was ever good enough. I read somewhere that he had planned to go back to WSBK on a Ducati but his shoulder injury never healed well enough to allow him to ride competitively. Would have loved to watch him duking it out with Rea and company.
I went to this race. Made a trip from the US to see the 2009 Qatar MotoGP race (the year it rained), and had a layover on the way back in Amsterdam the day before the Assen WSBK race. Decided I’d be crazy not to go, so I told my boss I needed an extra day off and changed my flight. Was disappointed to see Ben crash in race 1, but race 2 made up for it! I had a pit pass, so got some pictures of the post race interview podium with Ben, Nori, and Haslam. This race was 14+ years ago, wow!?!
Had to come here after Spies placed 5th in Today's GP race in Qatar (outstanding job Elbowz!!). Now....If Spies and Rossi can have a battle THIS EPIC with Elbowz coming out on top!!!! It will happen one of these days.
i can't imagine spies being in SBK for only one year. I hope he stays in SBK, he's more familiar with the bikes and riding style that I don't want to see him leave 1000cc inlines yet!
Even though I'm from the U.S. and would love to see Spies win, I couldn't agree more. Would be a shame if he never brought home a championship in his career. Haga and Bayliss have always been my favorite riders not only for their winning ways, but simply for their fantastic character.
Even in AMA 600 class Spies was almost frightening to watch. AMA tracks have walls and no run off area. Ben would have the bike twisted and pushed over the limit. He was steps ahead of Josh Herring and Roger Hayden at the time. I'd see him talk to established racers like Troy Corser and look like a fan. He didn't see himself at their level even though he was.
I believe Ben went on to win one MotoGP race at assen. However his career fizzled out shortly afterwards. Always wondered what went wrong. I will call you fell and hurt his shoulder something you can never seem to come back but always thought maybe there was something else. The guy was super fast and super motivated. The Duel between him and haga Rivals that of Edwards and Bayless.
@Jamesbowman777 I Really apriciate your way off talking. I hope that spies will ride at the top because this top is to small at the moment. And we will see if he wins anything. But don't forget: Rossi is and will always be a child in his mind and will be dangerous centanly until his 34th.
Going in circles is a lot harder then you think . I have road race at willow RZ 350 and have went in circles short track stock car. dont knock it if you never have done it
Man I really miss those exciting days with Ben Spies. It's July 9, 2021, and this race still gives me goosebumps...BEN SPIES!
Yes!!!
I beat him once when we were kids…. His motor blew up lol…
Yes what a season! and that's my bday too!!!
Re-living this moment. Those were the days! The last of the true superbike days!
By far my favorite season of WSBK ever. Man, Spies was a true beast on that Yamaha. He definitely made his American fans proud. 🇺🇸💪👍
*texan
As an Italian that season I started with chearing Fabrizio, but Spies soon took my heart. What a beast, came outta nowhere, won, left. Absolute madlad.
Ben was the man , you turned WSB upside down !!! He was so awesome
He graduated from the University of Mat Mladin .
Ben Spies was the man!!.. I really wish he would’ve raced longer.. he’s the reason I own a GSXR.. Team Yoshimura Legend !!
That was an amazing pass. I was watching that race and couldn't believe that. Amazing. Spies is great.
Spies was iconic for sure.
miss ben spies

How old Ben Spies now in 2023? I wonder that Spies is now somewhere around 34...
@purwantiallan5089 I think he was 25 in 2009, so now 39/40
@@purwantiallan5089 He's 40, can't find a lot of content on him either, looks like he's enjoying life
Insane overtake, I miss Spies so much!
I have watched Ben Spies since he was a teenager racing AMA 750 Supersport back in the late 90's... this guy has a separate trailer to carry his bollox in.... He is the best superbike rider on the planet right now.
This video always makes me smile.
One of the best years ever for WSBK.
Every race with Ben Spies is a great race. This WSBK championship was the best year since Colin got the best of Bayliss on the RC51. What a great rider, team, and bike... Miss you Ben!!
Toseland vs bayliss at assen was great too
Two of my greatest SBK heroes of all time!
Elbowz... We miss you. I'll always remember WSBK 2009 season.
You almost have to feel bad for Haga, getting older on one of the best bikes that season, never had a championship. It looked like his year, then Ben comes along.

Remember watching him in AMA, incredible. Couldn't tell you much about him after this WSB season.

Ben, you're a great great great rider!!!!
FANTASTIC!!!!
THAT 2009 WSB WAS GREAT. MY OLDEST SON IS NAMED BEN AFTER BEN SPIES A GREAT RACER .
special season 2019, all these years later still have the emotions and hear/feel them from the announcers
Oh, what could have been. Spies was so much better than his contemporaries and should have earned multiple world championships.
Had to come here after Spies placed 5th in Today's GP race in Qatar (outstanding job Elbowz!!). Now....If Spies and Rossi can have a battle THIS EPIC with Elbowz coming out on top!!!! It will happen one of these days.
holy shit that was probably the best moment of sbk09
I really missed Ben Spies. Truly sensational...him on the R1.
Wow what a way to go out!!! Spies was awesome on the R1 !!!
Brillant Move! Spies and Haga will be in another planet this year in WSBK!
God i needed that. with racing currently being delayed by Corona, it's a good time review the classics. good job TH-cam Algorithm.
According to commentary, Spies was overtaking at every turn
True. Spies in 2009 kinda reminded me a lot to Hamilton 2007.
truly inspired riding be Ben.
Maybe the greatest epic in the 35 years of SBK was how Ben won this title
i can't imagine spies being in SBK for only one year. I hope he stays in SBK, he's more familiar with the bikes and riding style that I don't want to see him leave 1000cc inlines yet!
That was superbike!!!!
Effin classic ! such a good race !
Shame he had so little impact in MotoGP now he’s all but forgotten
CasSandra Wilcox unfortunately he had a lot of bad luck too. He had the talent and potential, but luck just wasn’t on his side unfortunately.
He’s a legend in the States
He was teammates with a Spanish rider in a Spanish run series. He was doomed from the start.
@@stickvortex we all miss Riko Sakurauchi and her only WSBK title....
Yup
Spies was a great rider, shame he’s not racing anymore
Even though I'm from the U.S. and would love to see Spies win, I couldn't agree more. Would be a shame if he never brought home a championship in his career. Haga and Bayliss have always been my favorite riders not only for their winning ways, but simply for their fantastic character.
Noriyuki Haga and Ben Spies haven't heard those names in a long time
that is some racing people. he is definetly skilled. cant wait to see him on moto gp. time to see some action at moto gp
That was brilliant.
Turned up...beat everybody!!! With style on the heaviest R1 made. Bosh. Job done ✔
Rewatching them during corona lockdowns....
We will miss this guy...
It's such a shame haga never won a championship
Spies was fantastic!
japanese "DEMEKIN!" awesome
Epic! Go Spies, Go Yamaha!
Spies is pure dynamite!!!!!!
gave me the chills
How GP used to be.....
Now it is just a dead duck in the water....this is frigging great racing in WSBK.
BEN THE KING!
Show us the full race please!!!
Brilliant!
Era of king Cornering Yamaha
sick!!!!!
cant wait to see a battle Rossi vs Spies!
great rider!
look closely @1:24 and check out spies hit the throttle- classic!!!
I hate the way the euro announcers are always trying to call the race win before its over.
Ben's gonna kick some serious ass in motogp on the factoryike.
He is on eof the best riders in the world, I really love him, I'm a big fan.
che animale Spies, ne ho visti veramente pochi più forti di lui
Spies, Haga, Haslam...they are all great rider...
Assen was made for Yahama 🔥🔥🔥😵😵😵 full beast
I remember watching that race
Haga foi o melhor japones correndo na moto velicidade....................faz falta!!!
STREPITOSO BEN!!!
il nuovo fenomeno!!!!!!
olaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
they must have that bike tuned pretty well to be hauling his steel set down the track
Miss Ben spies
Bad ass.
this year yamaha shift from flatlane to crossplane
Power of r1..✌️
HAGA Rules ! Always. Noriyuki gave us many good years OK - Ben was solid too, too bad about his injuries.
Felt bad for Haga, dude was up there with Troy and Ben and could never pull out the win.
auuuuuuuuuuuuu spettacoloooooooooooooooooo
Who's the mian commentator?
What ccm class was it? if this was the best lap, i guess the race wasnt that good lol
They should call him Mr. Tarantula because that's what he looks like on the bike!
I miss Haga. 2020
That boy is from TEXAS!
I miss Ben "The Texas Terror" Spies, he has a lot of potential back then but bad luck ruined it.
quel dépassement spectaculaire !!
BEN SPIES!!!! FTW YAYAYAAYA
Sick! when you get a tall Leo rider this is what happens, call them spirit barkers...GPC is just matter of time for this boiy
Just the end was surprising..
1:22 announcer: OW'ON BEN!
mechanical dnf's i think aren't related to Wood, I think it's more of a testament toward the GSXr over the new R1.
What does Raz think of spies, I wonder!
I know its only me watching this in 2020
@Jamesbowman777 I Really apriciate your way off talking. I hope that spies will ride at the top because this top is to small at the moment. And we will see if he wins anything. But don't forget: Rossi is and will always be a child in his mind and will be dangerous centanly until his 34th.
are you allowed to add turbochargers for supersports and superbike?
Bit sad the way his career fizzled out but that’s sport I guess, so many different paths we can take.
that whas 2009 few years later he repeated this, but then in MotoGP!
🏁🏁🏁
that was fucking amazing
I miss the old Assen layout. Before it got ruined 😒
i was there lol :P
in Drenthe,Assen
i live in holland btw
Going in circles is a lot harder then you think .
I have road race at willow RZ 350 and have went in circles short track stock car.
dont knock it if you never have done it
Why no Americans in WSBK today?
Sorry im late 11 years
