My problem is worse than these women. Mine began with a medication that was prescribed by my doctor for severe arthritis pain. One of the first side effects was hair dryness. But it was the only thing that stopped my pain.
Your fellow cosmetologist and youtuber GlamFam Hair & Beauty posted about dry hair 4 months ago and I listed the things that dry out my particular hair. I'ma drop it here too: What dries out my hair: 1. Hard water 2. Sulfate/clarifying/detoxing/stripping/chelating shampoo every week 3. styling products daily...yes edge control is drying out your edges and that is why they are breaking off every day. I'm not even going to say anything about those who stick down their wigs daily. Y'all want edges or wigs? 😋 4. having my hair out; ends flapping in the wind 5. Not deep conditioning with heat weekly 6. Not spraying a leave-in mist daily 7. Forgetting my satin/silk scarf/bonnet while sleeping/napping. 8. cold air including airconditioning 9. central heating in the winter 10. excessive sun on my hair. the end. 😅🤣😂 They all trolled me but I don't care. Lol! This is the way my hair is with my genentics and the environment and lifestyle that I live. I literally had to figure out how to get my hair to retain moisture. Curly Chemistry talks about a moisture cycle and mine is 24 hours...not 3 days or 3 weeks or 3 months.
The stylist mentioned braids but I think it’s a little more than that like you said . I personally think the hair isn’t properly moisturized before getting braids. Some braiders require their clients to not put anything on their hair before the appointment and the only thing the braider will use on the client’s hair is gel/jam , mousse and maybe some oil on your scalp. Another reason why braiders should go back to using hair grease .
@@bren7067 then they don't know how to braid and they need to take some lessons before they try to charge $300+ we been braiding with grease for centuries now these women can only do hair with gel and a blowout?
@@AfrikanHairGod 💯mine is almost completely gone by putting a lot of oils and grease at the ends. Daily I’ve been doing it. My hair looked like hers. Took only a few months❤even when it’s braided in a protective style (no extensions) I still oil and grease the ends and now they are silky and curly and used to be dry and bushy looking. I also primarily smooth the ends with my fingers instead of a comb and my hair loves it.
Thats what my hard water damage looked like :/ A good cut, a chelating shampoo, and a shower filter reversed all of that. My hair is smoother and stronger now, and no longer breaks at the nape for no good reason.
Your advice to use the grease( natures blessing) and water has helped me a lot with my dryness. I regret cutting out grease all those years smh knowing that’s what worked for me as a child/teen.
I also regret cutting out grease. I added it back a month ago and it's wild how much more moisturized my hair is. And my cuticles are layed down completely and my hair feels silky smooth.
MAN!!! Same here and I went natural in the early 2000s 🤦🏾♀️ I’m so glad I gave myself permission a few years ago to go back to grease, ‘cones, straight shampoo, cotton scarf and whatever else was demonized but worked for ME
I remember seeing all these new videos about how grease is bad for your hair and I’m like huh? Lol my momma always greased my scalp and hair and it was full and loooong and moisturized
My daughter's hair was going through this. I've had locs for about thirteen years and I was clueless about how natural hair is supposed to behave, so for the pass 3+ years (she's 5) her hair was behaving strangely and getting progressively worse and worse because I didn't have a clue. I wasn't moisturizing often enough (it's always a fight when it comes to doing her hair) when she'd let me do it, which was about once a week, I would feel the difference in texture but was hoping one the many products I was trying would magically fix it. It was difficult to detangle at the ends and then the middle, so I started trimming but I wasn't taking enough off and it just kept travelling up the hair shaft. After watching your video with the client who was getting the curly cuts, as you were showing us up close how the ends looked, I was like, oh my god, my kid's hair looks just like that. No split ends or fairy knots but those ends!! Her hair was really long and growing in just fine but those ends. I would twist her hair and slather on lots of product to smooth it down but by the following day her ends would look like a frizzy dry puff at the end of the twists and some of the strands would point in different directions. Just like your client. I took matters into my own hands, and I cut not trim...I cut about 8 to 10 inches off her hair about 1 week ago. I haven't gotten all off just yet but it's only about half to 1 inch left and I will continue to trim it down until they are all gone! And her hair is behaving much better now, the strands feel smoother because like you said the cuticle is lying flat, its staying moisturized a bit longer now and I spritz with water and add a little leave in conditioner before it starts to dry out. Thanks to you, I know what to look for now and when I see those wonky ends, I will trim them off before it gets out of hand again. I appreciate all the wonderful information you share on this channel. I got rid of my locs before Covid and I am 1 year into my Twa. I'm keeping our regime simple (shampoo, condition, leave in conditioner, grease and water when needed) wash day doesn't take all day anymore. Much love from Barbados!!
My hair was like this for similar reasons. Ive been natural my whole life and always had a solid routine. BUT! The last few years have been ROUGH.( I dont recommend going to law school during a global panny). Unfortunately, my hair care got set on the back burner. I would go too long b/n washes and haphazardly applied product. Leading to chronic dryness. My only saving grace was the occasional hair mask as a part of a self care day. I would just pull back into buns daily as I had no mental energy to do more. I also stopped wearing a bonnet/scarf b/c I'd finish studying and just pass out. I graduated May '22 and since then, Ive been implementing a more structured regiment and following alot of your advice (and eating better!). My curls are finally starting to feel and look like they used to. But my ends were absolutely chewed by rats. The damage was visible even when wet. There was a noticeable demarcation where the damaged curls and healthier hair was. This is why the "no oils" crowd will have to pry this bottle of almond oil and jar of grease out my cold, ded hands. The combo of a lil leave in cream plus almond oil has been a game changer in this past year.
I love watching him prepare the hair. His movements are so concise, no wasted energy. And everything looks clean and organized…so satisfying.Ahhhhhhh❤❤❤❤❤
Yep, you literally can't comb through it without catching each other like velcro. That' s what I'm dealing with. Never had before BGC, even when my hair was dehydrated and neglected. Smh
Loving your channel. As a fellow cosmetologist I’m so glad to see people tackling issues that clients are having and we as practitioners honestly don’t have all the answers to. I alway see people with this issue and they believe that their hair “doesn’t get flat/straight” and I’m like yeah but this issue is not normal. At the end of the day these are hair strands and hair strands do get smooth with proper care. Nobody has an inherently bad or dry hair texture.
The attention to detail is top notch. I learned so much bc of living in different climates and have been struggling to find a stylist who I trust to support the years of effort I’ve put in on my own. I like doing my hair, but my arms are tiiiiired (and undefined) 😂😂😂. Your expertise is much appreciated. ❤
This describes what I was experiencing with my hair and I know it has to be chronic dryness. Like this client, I went through of season of putting my hair up and out of the way, tying up, braids, and not regularly moisturizing like I used too. (Pandemic stress). Last year I came to myself, shaved the sides and grew out everything over the past year. I just chopped again recently (even all over) and hair is much healthier this round. I'm basically back to basics. (Wash, condition, moisturize, trim, etc.) I really love your approach to hair care. Thank you.
Hello. I’d first like to thank you for this spectacular trim at the end of the vid. It’s rare to see a proper trim these days. Secondly, I think “blasted cuticles” can be saved but I also believe it’s the culprit behind some shedding that is confused as breakage, where shingles of a single strand are lifting off any point of the strand and falling.
Your vids are so educational. And its made me appreciate my hair more. I actually dont have any serious hair issies beside slight dryness every now and again. But being forewarned helps me spot issues before they become issues.
This happened to me. I had to stop using products with protein in them all together for my hair to get back to normal. There are so many products on the market that contain protein, but you wouldn’t know it unless you are privy to the various types of protein. I ultimately ended up big chopping again, though
So that's actually a very common misconception about hair. Protein is not something to be feared but is often misunderstood. People think they are either protein sensitive or that they need to avoid products with protein. The reason why proteins seem to be in so many products is because they are needed for the products to have balanced benefit to hair. The proteins in these creams and stylers are not drying out of breaking down your hair. They are there for protection and reinforcement for the hair's resilience, elasticity, and porosity. They are not Protein treatments that will dry out your hair and make it brittle. It's supplementing your hair the way you would a balanced diet.
@@AfrikanHairGodThat’s good to know, because I have been avoiding protein like the plague. I’m not sure what happened with my hair, then. But, now that I know products with proteins aren’t the issue, I will start reincorporating them into my hair routine. Thank you!❤️
When my hair gets dehydrated I wash and condition it. I usually have to re do my hair between 3-5days. Trying to get my hydration to last 7days. I never let it get dry enough to get totally dehydrated.
I was doing the same exact thing as you and I thought my hair was extremely hydrated. Especially because it received water so quickly. Now I’m slowly connecting the dots and what I’m uncovering is not ideal. 😓
Overwhelmed and discouraged by these new forms of damage and terminology. Chemical treated hair has different types of possible damage but I feel like there is nothing new and no surprises. Where as for natural hair . . . And I’m sick of it.
@AfrikanHairGod for sure. Honestly, sometimes when my hair gets unbearably dry, I straight up drench in shower water and the head shake that most naturals do lol. It helps with redefining and giving more movement. I then followed up with a spray leave in like aphogee, particularly if it's antifrizz, heat protectant, and misty(I go under the dryer after some times).
You’ve posted this video right on time because I believe this is what I’m experiencing. I plan on cutting all the dead hair. Wherever the comb starts to catch, I’m cutting! I keep my hair in crochet styles anyways so I don’t mind cutting it off. I would love to come to your shop and have you do my hair. If I could just stop sleeping in on the weekends lol
Thank you for doing this video and letting people know about this. I didn’t know the name of this but I do have this happened to my hair and I knew because of my actual hair texture when it healthy that it was my hair as far different then when it’s very dry. Black hairdressers used to accuse me of putting a perm in my hair with my hair was in his healthy state and they had never seen my dry damage hair. It was as if I wasn’t supposed to have hair that when you put water on, it was soft and silky But dried to perfect curl. Because my much older sister didn’t know how to take care of my hair when I was growing up, including my mom, I would have this quite often until they would start with abuse, and just break my hair and washing it on a normal basis. my father is biracial so my hair comes out very very fine. They would use products like ultra hair grease on my hair it would cause this type of a situation. They would put perms on my hair which would just melt my hair away within a few minutes of being on my hair. It was overtime as me as an adult to come to realize what my hair liked and didn’t like. I’m a very dark skinned girl, so I guess they thought I was not the type of girl that could just go with just water and conditioner yet I am the type of person that can go just with water and conditioner and some oil and be fine. Not perfect but fine. Perfect for me is actually Washing my hair and conditioning it on a more freaking basis if I’m using a lot of hair product. Pretty much keeping my scalp, clean and moisturize, not grease, but moisturize has been the winning combination for my hair. All the natural oil that I produce if I can get it to go down my hair shaft my hair is fine, but it does need to be washed because my own natural oils become more acidic and that could be because of my diet. I’m not sure. I’m still trying to figure that out but my hair is healthy and I know what to do to treat it right and when I do do a style or a product that’s in because I want to I’m already set up the subject consequences of what maybe the outcome of it.
My ends do this a LOT and im still unsure what its coming from. They get crispy snd straight. Ive been able to fix it from time to time, but ive always forgot what method I've used😅 i just wish my hair stops doing it when it gets to a certain length 😭🥲❤️
I went to my aunt today and got my hair assessment and she’s informed me to stop the curly cuts my hair looked very choppy with all the weird ways my hair was cut that you’re supposed to get cuts in blown out state and if you want shape you can get it with a blow out cut. She also informed that my hair cuticle is damaged, my hair is severely dry, and that I had split ends which she was able to cut all of them because they weren’t as server as others have experienced. So basically what I’m saying is all the negatives with curly cuts, no oils no butters is true these methods are very damaging to the hair. I will no longer do wash n gos, and I’m on a journey to healthy hydrated natural hair.
My ends used to do the same thing, but I started adding a heavy oil (lanolin or sometimes castor oil) to just my ends after I moisturize the length of my hair. Now I don't have that problem anymore.
@@lovespellmami I cut mine a little at a time because they were making detangling too stressful. Once the ends are severely dehydrated I'm not sure if they will fully recover. But oiling them definitely prevented future dryness.
@@lovespellmamiI ordered a KeraCare product- the Overnight Moisturizer- and I didn’t have to cut my hair. Also, after clarifying, I use Joico cuticle sealer. Those 2 were game changers @diva4life361
I would love a follow up on how to repair hair in this condition. I assume you need to trim it but as you cut the dry hair out can you do anything to improve its condition?
Hello love your videos been watching for years. You have a brush that it used to blow dry Course textures of hair. Is it a certain type or brand that you use it looks like it does a really good job. Thank you
Yasssss, it feels and looks like rats been chewing on these ends & strands chile‼️👀🫣🤣 I’ve never in my life experienced this until following a particular haircare methodology. 😝 I know the only thing that will fix it is to cut it all out. Unfortunately it’s close to my scalp so technically I’d need to shave my head to rid myself of all the damage. 😞 Thank you for continuing to work to figure this all out since others won’t. ♥️
5:38 I’ve realized when my hair is in twists that when I pull on one string that it be straight and it’s weird,it doesn’t seem normal, why is it so straight, do straight that I feel it from my root
You need to make sure that this is what it actually is and not just what her hair is supposed to be. The key is determining the difference between the healthy hair vs the compromised cuticles
Nothing really. The effect that pH has on the cuticles is not as crucial as ppl think. Products or solutions that are too acidic or alkaline and take hair outside is healthy pH level of 4.5-5.5 can compromise the cuticles improperly diluted ACV, relaxer, bleach, baking soda, lemon juice, etc. Rapid swelling and contracting of the hair can cause hair damage, not sure about the cuticles though
I honestly think my crown is compromised- it’s dry and rough. I have been using K18 and trying deep conditioning every week after I wash. I’ll be cutting it in the mid fall. I’m a wash and go - type 3c/4a - highly dense and high porosity hair. What causes this ???
I'm sorry I seen this video but I have a different question and problem with my hair. I have locs for 9 years now one problem I noticed and hate is the gel when I get my retwist WHY DO MY SCALP ITCH. I Hate this do I need to put gel on it for a retwist? I'm thinking about getting my locs out if I can't correct this problem. Thank you so much for your help
No. It only just how efficient hair receives and retains moisture. Ppl put too much into porosity. There's so much misinformation on low porosity. It retains moisture the best meaning that it doesn't take as much to get it moisturized
@@sherell273 i can't assess your hair without physically examining it. I would suggest that you find a professional that can give you better perspective. You might not even be low porosity tbh.
@@AfrikanHairGod Actually, I tested my hair porosity last night, the result shows that I have low porosity. Plus, my hair length has grown uneven. How do I fix these issues? Please help me!
@@sherell273 you can't accurately test porosity with the water test because no one's hair just drifts in the middle for normal porosity. You would need to know and understand the behaviors of all porosities to be able to correctly classify your hair's porosity level. This is why i don't stress for my viewers to focus on porosity. It's not necessary for better understanding your hair

5:13 wow this is very interesting, I love your videos
I think this is me. I’m with a stylist that blows my hair and I’m back to twist outs
Omg I'm having this problem 😢
Great job, wonderful video. Keep it up
My ends used to do the same thing, but I started adding a heavy oil (lanolin or sometimes castor oil) to just my ends after I moisturize the length of my hair. Now I don't have that problem anymore.
did you have to cut ur hair? im curious bc i dont wanna cut mine off
@@lovespellmami I cut mine a little at a time because they were making detangling too stressful.
Thank you
Dayum. This is my hair. SMH.
Same. I called my hair a rat's nest for YEARS 😩
Yasssss, it feels and looks like rats been chewing on these ends & strands chile‼️👀🫣🤣
I’ve never in my life experienced this until following a particular haircare methodology. 😝
I know the only thing that will fix it is to cut it all out. Unfortunately it’s close to my scalp so technically I’d need to shave my head to rid myself of all the damage. 😞
Thank you for continuing to work to figure this all out since others won’t. ♥️
5:38 I’ve realized when my hair is in twists that when I pull on one string that it be straight and it’s weird,it doesn’t seem normal, why is it so straight, do straight that I feel it from my root
My god daughter has this and no matter how many times I cut it off it comes right back.
It’s impossible to grow out her hair.
You need to make sure that this is what it actually is and not just what her hair is supposed to be. The key is determining the difference between the healthy hair vs the compromised cuticles
😮 interesting 💇🏿♀️👍🏿
You can reply to my comments. I’m not sensitive to disagreements😂
I can definitely say that you aren't 👍😁
What role does ph play in this- ie, using slightly acidic products to close the cuticle during styling?
He has an Q & A next wed if you want to join and have him answer your questions
He also talks about retwisting locs with grease only. He never uses gel for that.
@AfrikanHairGod Does low porosity causes hair to grow unevenly, having thin hair, not add enough protein and moisturizing to hair and scalp?
No. It only just how efficient hair receives and retains moisture. Ppl put too much into porosity. There's so much misinformation on low porosity. It retains moisture the best meaning that it doesn't take as much to get it moisturized
@@AfrikanHairGod Well, can you tell me what cause my hair to grow uneven and how to treat low porosity?

I think this is me.
