About the observation deck In Halifax YHZ: It used to have a direct view out onto the ramp with only a single pane of glass however the terminal was extended outwards a few years ago. This extension was built around the observation deck hence why it now has a view of inside the terminal instead of directly to the ramp.
It really is a shame, as I used to sit in the observation deck for hours at a time when I was a kid. It had a great view before.

Going way back the observation deck used to be outside. It cost a dime( I think) to go out there. This was before jetways. Mostly prop planes

Back in the 1980s I flew Calgary to Halifax on an Air Canada DC-8. The flight time was over 6 hours and the crew told me at the time it was their longest domestic flight. In fact the crew had to adhere to international layover regulations on either end of the route.

Great video, as always! As someone originally from NS who lives in Vancouver I was delighted when AC started this route. I flew this route in June and again a couple of weeks ago and it is nice to not have to stopover in Calgary, Toronto or Montreal. I booked comfort fare in the summer and really liked having the extra legroom. On my recent flight back I booked a basic economy ticket and I found the non-preferred seats to be too tight for a 6 hour flight so I paid $117 for a preferred seat on the way back. I will now only book comfort fare on this route to save my legs from cramped quarters and from saving my money on paying so much for a preferred seat! I also booked the Chef Jerome meal box for my return flight in the summer and they did not have it so I selected something from their menu. I tried booking the Chef Jerome meal box for my recent return flight and again it was not available. Makes me wonder why they offer it! I paid more then I would have had I just bought a meal on the plane! Great review, Alex :)

Hey Alex, just reaching out to say that after lurking for a long time on your channel, I've decided to subscribe. Your content is GREAT, and I invariable enjoy your videos, so a BIG thank you!!
I hear about the long(er) flights on a 737, and narrow-body comfort vs a wide body. However I must say that as far as the MAX is concerned, the nice Sky Interior coupled to the MUCH quieter cabin makes a ton of difference for me. While I would not mind a long-ish flight on an A320ceo, I would absolutely dread one on a regular 738. Couple of years back we flew out to Cape Verde from Milan on a tightly packed, old 738. That flight was epically miserable, at almost 6 hours of length.... Again, the "ole' faithful" 757 is equally miserable, due to the loud engines. And I've also had miserable flights on 777s (one just last week), and especially so on GE90s powered ones, again because of cabin noise...
I think that comfort-wise, what matters most to me is 1) noise levels 2) seat pitch/legroom. I can happily live with the rest.

I've done a couple of AC MAX flights this year. The first was from Montreal to Vancouver, 3685km, 5hrs 9mins in Business Class. The second was London to Halifax, 4600km, 6hrs 31mins in an Economy Preference seat. Both were excellent flights though the first one was delayed and we missed our connection to Victoria. The transatlantic flight included food and drink and as it was a lightly loaded flight, I was offered two main courses which I accepted! I also had three seats to myself which made it extra comfortable.

Love all your videos and the effort you put in on our behalf! My husband and I did this flight back at the end of September to attend my youngest brother’s funeral in Vancouver. My home airport is YSJ but it was so expensive and convoluted to fly from there to YVR. I was thrilled to find a non-stop flight from YHZ instead. After redeeming Aeroplan miles and paying the cash difference, it was still a better deal to drive to Halifax, redeem hotel points for a stay in Halifax and pay for parking at the Park’N Fly for a week (all during Ferocious Fiona too!) I’m grateful I had these options during an otherwise distressing time. I didn’t even realize this was the longest non-stop flight in Canada until your video! Your videos are not only entertaining but educational too! They really build my appreciation for this beautiful, vast country that we have the privilege to call home so thanks again!

    Unrelated topic.
I was inspired by your videos and I am actually looking into YYZ-Halifax-Saint Pierre-Halifax-LHR. I am Interested in going to this little French island, as well as trying out 38M on a longer flight. I noticed the following:
    1) one-way trip is so expensive
    2) although stuck in a small narrowbody across the Atlantic, the departure and arrival time is very attractive. Instead of arriving bright and early in the morning (as do most North America to European flights are), you arrive in the evening. You get there, eat and sleep the whole night through and be ready to be a tourist the very next day. Some may love the early morning arrival so they get a full day of touring... in my experience, Atlantic flights are too short to get a full night sleep. Typically, you arrive at 5 am or latest 9 am, you are jetlagged, tired, carrying a suitcase everywhere. Cant check in and too tired to go anywhere. So this trip should be interesting!

In August I was flying to Toronto from Winnipeg with AC. Originally I was supposed to be on an A320 which would've been a nice little nostalgic trip, but the flight was delayed and eventually we were swapped to a MAX (I guess the A320 went mechanical). Interestingly that means I got a free upgrade to a preferred seat :P It was a nice short flight with a cool sunset descent into the clouds!

it wasn't all that incredibly long ago that there were no direct flights from yhz that went westerly beyond yyz, and that in some instances travelling between the two required a leg involving a turbo-prop 'air canada jazz' on the yul-yhz/yhz-yul segment.

Dorval Airport used to have landside "wall" of windows facing the tarmac as well as doors to an outside balcony to observe planes. It was phsyucally where the current security checkpoint is (and there was a quiet seating area there. balcony reained for a while , but closed/locked doors and eventually the lounge/seating area was replaced with check-in counters for Air Transat after Air Canada orderred ADM to close Mirabel airport. At that poimt a new lounged was created upstairs (no balcony) along with fast food outlets.
Eventually with the many iterations of rebuilding, the upstairs was closed and replaced with intl airline lounges. And the former lounge/balcony space turned into Air Transat check-in was converted into the security check-poit. (this required removing a good chunk of the satellite terminal because the main terminal advanced enough on tarmac they needed to make room for planes to pass).
So now Dorval is an airport that has 0 visibility of tarmac from landside.

There were plenty of washrooms and no lineups for these washrooms. Nowadays nothing is free, you are stuffed into a small jet and there is lineups for the washrooms for the whole flight. Great video, but I'd love to see St. John's YYT to Victoria YYJ. Unfortunately I'm not sure if either airport could support the A330 which would be required for that kind of range.

P.S. We flew your routing 1 October last fall and it was great bypassing the central Canadian hubs.

After flying across the country in Dash 8's, have you regained the ability to fully extend your legs and stand upright??? 😆

I always envied people who could fly home direct from western Canada. Over the last 40 years flying from YEG to YQM the best shortest duration was 7 1/2 hours. If your not careful in your flight choices that can extend to 10 hours. In the summer sometimes AC would fly thru YUL and that would save 50 mins of torture. Now my social connections have dwindled to my birth place I really don't miss sitting in those seat of ill comfort. With DVT you can actually say that they are hazardous to your health.

So since you spent a decent amount of time at yhz does mean that there’s a possibility of a yhz plane spotting video coming in the future 👀

One thing I don't like about the AC 737 Max 8 the regular seats aren't very comfortable for long journeys like my flight from Halifax to Calgary yesterday. Consider upgrading if you're on a 5+ hour flight 👍

I miss EnRoute too. I wish they still published it.
