Valhalla Rising, with Mads Mikkelsen did that to me when I first saw it. Almost no dialogue in the whole movie, just a story told through violence with a creepy foreboding atmosphere. The silence as Mads beats a guys head in with a rock at the beginning just sets the tone for the whole movie
@@bushidoblues9302 you should check out out! After I watched it the first time I was exactly like you said. It haunted me and I had to watch it again to gleam more information from it, like surely I was missing something? Or no? It's just like that?
richardmartinez that movie stuck with me for years. I finally found the name of it and started following Mads Mikkelsen. He has a lot of unique movies from Denmark but Yeah, Valhalla Rising was big.
I've seen Gohatto so many times, one day for music, another for the haunting style of direction and colors, or just to watch the amazing choreography and sword fights. You are right about how it comes back in my head.
Holy shit I caught this on SBS at like 2am when I was in highschool, never heard anyone talk about it and had completely forgotten the title! Thank you Mr. Algorithm
I saw it in the cinema in Ireland in 1999, amazing flick. I haven’t seen it since but some of the scenes have never left me, especially when he cut the cherry blossom.
Almost al the Takeshi Kitano's movies have the magic power to hunt your mind for a while . Like Zatoichi ( some of the cast are in this movie too ) , Hana Bi , Violent Cop , Boiling Point, even the surreal ones supposed to be comedy, leave some kind of zen in your mind . Back at the 90s early 00s, I spent a lot of nights searching and watching alternative and zen movies on the less commercial tv's networks
Sonatine live in my brain rent free, and it's usually the long shot of the gang sitting in the bus exiting the parking lot or the gang sitting outside waiting for a car as still as a painting that first comes to mind, rather than the shootouts or violence.
At least you got to see it!!!! It's such a shame these films were all mostly completely ignored by the World. I know the world is finally catching up now, but it's such a shame that the great Samurai Period Piece era were basically ignored by the World because if it wasn't Kurosawa, they didn't understand it, since Kurosawa mostly made Westernised versions that were more palatable by the World. Ōshima was a genius, completely underrated, but pure artist. He had always been one of my faves.
I just watched this movie 5 minutes ago! Your video came into my feed and I stopped it straightaway and had to watch this movie first because the first images you show of the dojo and setting looked so awesome. What a crazy movie, just brilliant!
Stopped the video at the spoilers. Thanks for the heads up! I think I watched the movie many years ago but forgotten. I recognised Sakamoto's unmistakeable music though. His son put together a documentary about him: Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus
I hadn't considered the fox spirit angle. A complaint of mine was that the kid was too weird looking to be beautiful, but it works if he's a fox and his 魅力 is magical.
I couldn’t stop thinking about cannibal holocaust. Thanks for the review I avoided Taboo due to homosexuality. I prefer lady snowblood! Meiko is a beautiful actress.
Clearly you've never watched a Beat Takeshi/ Takeshi Kitano film before, everyone one of his films is ultra violence out of nowhere, completely somber and massively fucking confusing, they're amazing films.
The whole movie is about Soji The Untarnished. Oops didn't finish. He's caught between the old school elders who want things to stay at least the same as it is now, and the new school coming in which are more focussed on themselves than their duties. He is a group of one.
It needs a blu ray release...even the sound needs a upgrade...but there's many samurai movie's that need an upgrade especially samurai rebellion!!...how can a film that good not get the proper treatment
I became a fan of Kitano and Sakamoto in Oshima's 1983 film Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. I'll probably get around to watching this but, c'mon man, you can't drop spoilers halfway through your review. I had to stop watching.
Yeah I was gonna say this movie does throw you into the deep end a bit. I watched it literally yesterday after finding this video and everything was very apparent from the get-go.
Their is a new Japanese manga called the blue wolves of mibu that is about samurai and shinsengumi and there is a anime coming out on the blue wolves of mibu based on the manga.
Im glad I found this review. I watched this last year and I still think about it at times too, so I definitely relate. It gives you a lot to ponder and yes, its very captivating. However I did want to say this comment section is so weird. I feel like a lot of them cant get past the fact it has homoerotic colors. Im guessing a lot of red pill weeaboo types. Its unfortunate, theyre missing out.
Is this about the tension between gay Samurais who are attracted to each other? Is it a story worth telling? Maybe Japanese people 250 years ago would wonder what the hell the point was. The Samurai spirit is the samurai spirit, there is not room for wokeness.
Some of the greatest Samurai films are explorations of what really is the worth of the bushido code. Seven Samurai, Harakiri, Sword of Doom, Yojimbo and Sanjuro, as well as many more.
Please look up “Shudo”. In Japanese history, it was often found in groups where women were forbidden. Even samurai groups are no exception. The Shinsengumi were indeed a group forbidden to women. This is also the subject of Takeshi Kitano's latest film, “Kubi.

Wow a samurai who was a manipulative psychopath in a harsh military setting, what a shocker..... but of course he must be a fox demon.
Personally, I don't believe that he actually is, it's just that the director used that shorthand as a way to frame the charecter for the audience.

Yeah cannibal holocaust is pretty unforgettable...
Lady snowblood from a cursory look does not even look comparable to gohatto.

nicely summed up
Clearly you've never watched a Beat Takeshi/ Takeshi Kitano film before, everyone one of his films is ultra violence out of nowhere, completely somber and massively fucking confusing, they're amazing films.
It is not a Takeshi film which by style is not like any of Oshima's films. Oshima always had a more elegant form.

I've seen a lot of Japanese dudes who practice this style of fighting confused as females because of their soft features and long hairdos.
