By the way, if you want the complementary color you can just add (+) or substract (-) 180 to the color, the number is degree on the circle wheel of 360 degrees.
Jesus, the photo in the snow opened my mind. I was struggling a lot with snowy pictures and this could be the solution to many pictures I really couldn't make look good even though I liked my composition. Thanks a lot!
I think your photos were looking alright already. If you really want to find your style, explore colour grading with RGB curves, quite similar to split toning but way more powerful and gives you control over highs, MIDS & shadows. All the colouring happens in the mids. Highlights and shadows are not that really important in terms of colour - might just desaturate them a bit. Split toning is a very delicate tool in my opinion. It's only for a subtle effect or to fix a photo which has random cast over it which cannot be corrected through HSL.
In the link you posted, you jumped from using Lightroom (LR) to using Photoshop (PS), where this vid is directed at using LR; apples and oranges...or at least oranges and tangelos. I will admit that with all of my photos I start in LR and then (Command-E Mac) send the image to PS to apply the curve you're talking about. That last step of adding an S-curve in PS to the photo really makes it pop. Funny thing is that it was my wife's idea while I was editing my photos to do this as the last step (just giving props where props are due). And I truly love and appreciate Mark's tips as I work to improve my overall photography skills! Keep it up brother!
@@rustyellis Oh sorry, I didn't realise I'm sending a Ps link. Although the curves tool in both Lr & Ps works exactly the same. Here's the link for Lr curves tool th-cam.com/video/YhQjt4_8yyk/w-d-xo.html I was talking about exploring color with the curve tool's individual Red, Green & Blue channels. It enables you to manipulate color throughout the dynamic range i.e. highlights, mids & shadows. Split toning was mainly used when developing analog b/w film, where you can color it in two colors, in only highlights and shadows. But mids is where all the coloring magic is. The next time you watch a movie, observe the highs and shadows are almost desaturated. Regarding the S curve, you can do it with Lr's curve tool with the exact same result, no need to go to Ps for this. I only take my photos to Ps if I need to remove or add any element. Lr is quite a powerful and focused photography software. Mark is an excellent landscape photographer, but I must say sometimes he goes overboard with post-processing. Each for their own opinion. All the best with your photography. Would love to see your work. Share your Instagram. Stay safe.
Finally a tutorial on split toning I understood. I've been using LR since V4 and have never attempted it with any success at all. I have numerous shots that I can apply this to now. Your videos are be beautifully done, clear and concise, to the point without being overdone and smoothly paced. I'll be watching this a few times.
Awesome Mark,I too have never bothered with split toning until watching your blog. Have to say it really dose give it that little something. Nothing over kill, perfect👍🏻

I'm loving your videos. I've been afraid of attempting any editing for years and have studiously avoided doing so but I've had to bite the bullet and am finding your explanations really accessible even as someone who's just stumbling around the very basics at the moment. Thanks.
Thank you soooo much for this lecture! It's been the best one to explain split-toning. What made it "click" for me was the use of the gradient map and then moving to a real photo!
I’m really finding your videos helpful! For a while, I stopped learning which kinda put me in a creative rut. It definitely has sparked my interest to keep exploring my creative side. Thanks Mark!
Mark Denney I’ll do my best! The rainy weather we’ve had in the South East certainly hasn’t helped! But I managed to get out today and make a few images I’m pleased with. I share my images on Instagram at @imagoluxphotography if you’d care to take a look. (Not trying to self-plug intentionally!)
I've heard Mark Littlejohn go on about split-toning in his Scottish brogue but I never knew exactly what it was. Thanks for explaining it so thoroughly and clearly. Can't wait to fiddle around with this the next time I edit a picture!
Mark, this showed up in my recommendations (!!!!!) and I am glad that it did because I hadn't seen this before. I have struggled with split toning, but this video provided a ton of clarity for me. Thanks.
Best Photography TH-cam Chanel EVER!!! I Have learned so much from you in a few videos that even after a week of researching about composition in landscape photography and other things, yours are the best and most informative out of all of them combined!!! You deserve so many more subscriber! i wish you the best of luck in your landscape photography and TH-cam careers! :)
Thanks for sharing your insight into how we can use different tools! I feel more creative and am going to try split-toning in my edits! I also really liked your way of presenting the information and the examples. I liked your voice tone and your demeanor. In your first example: The teal tint in the shadows removed the deep mahogany shade of the trees' bark.
Mark, I'm really enjoying your videos. I started with photography and editing about 6 months ago and your videos have really helped me with efficiently using the tools I've been randomly playing with in Light Room, such as split toning and the shortcuts video. Seeing in another video how you utilized PS to focus stack and get a really good image, I've decided this will be my next challenge. I look forward to seeing more of your video and lastly, thank you.
Excellent explanation of split toning! I've always intended to explore this feature in Lightroom but just never seem to get around to it. Reminds me of sepia toning I did in B&W print processing 50 years ago, only this time around I don't have to deal with toxic chemicals!
Thanks Mark for this video . As you said this an underutilized part of LR and for me no different due to a lack of understanding. Your concise explanation has opened a window of possibilities for me. Thanks so much again!
I've never thought of using split toning before, just did some experimenting with a couple of images, FANTASTIC tool. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Mark!
I’ve been using split toning for a while now. It’s an honest great tool. It really helps find that look that we all are looking for without drastically altering the image. I really do appreciate your videos. I stumbled upon your channel today, and have been watching your videos for a couple hours now. Great way to end a Sunday of relaxation. Also, thanks for the link to adobe color. That will definitely help me fine tune my split toning! I’d much rather watch your videos than some of the huge accounts. You seem far more real than the others.
Hey if you seen my other comment about you inspiring me to go out this morning, well I did. And I got a few photos. 3 of which I feel are my best so far.
I really enjoyed the way you explained using the split toning tool. The only part I don't quite understand, is how to know when it would be advisable to use it in certain photos, Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
This is such a great video! Thank You for making this. I’ve been looking for info on split toning and other techniques to improve my editing and final product. Every other TH-camr puts out these “tutorial” videos but it’s all BS, they just apply their presets. Then proceed to push their presets products and never go into detail about how to edit with out having to buy someone else’s presets. It’s annoying and has turned me away from photography and cinematography TH-camrs. Every video I go to someone’s trying to sell me something and not providing the information I’m looking for and I waste SO MUCH time watching those videos. The videos are just bait. But this was a breath of fresh air. Thank You 🙏🏽 and SUBSCRIBED. This is the type of Content I want to support.
Thank you for a great video! I've been using the temperature slider and I think the split toning provides much more control of the color and feel of the image. I can't wait to use it!

@@MarkDenneyPhoto Actually the amazing part that you can even analyze your own photos and their colors through Adobe Color. Thanks for the video also, I think this can be helpful for me for Instagram photos. As they require a different style and they have to be "eye-catchy" very quickly :)
I would do the exact opposite grade for the first example with the trees. I would push the highlights toward a desaturated blues. That would increase the mood that is already there. The blues would make the contrast with the brown perfectly.
You can remember the colour wheel by just remembering that CMY is opposite to RGB - so cyan is complimentary to red, magenta to green and yellow to blue :)
