Another great review Sam. The photography for the ‘up-close’ views was absolutely superb; most people wouldn’t look at their models that closely. It really showed off the paintwork on the 08 as outstanding. Those brass fragments - seems like the worm gear is grinding itself away? Implies a meshing issue. Fundamental flaw; send it back. One small idea - there is a gadget that measures the speed of model locomotives - it sits by the trackside and has a couple of IR LEDs in reflective beams and can give a speed readout in scale mph. When reviewing you could see how closely the model scale speeds reflect the prototype. Accurascale claim to gear their models to represent scale speeds, be interesting to check those and see if other makers are anywhere near realistic.
If you are interested in Hornby, the inside of locomotive is very clean. Even looks clean from Heljan. Surely the factory have not control their quality of environment and also Bachmann's QC have not done a right thing.
It’s a very old model now. But when it came out it was an incredible model. Still a good model if you can get it at good price and still a better model than Hornby 08 when price is put in. I think that’s why Bachmann have never retooled it because a new one would be around the same or more than the Hornby and the boot would be on the other foot.
Hi Sam, great honest review, i have a Bachmann class 08 in DB schenker red livery, mine runs very well, i will fit lighting and sound to it at some stage, thanks for sharing.
Fantastic review Sam! I have the freightliner orange version of this and love it. A couple of things - the metal shavings aren't an issue in mine, so likely an isolated issue. Also, the loco can't fit a bachmann 8 pin decoder! I picked up a rake of 3 Dapol HIA wagons today for £26 each, they're fantastic! I highly recommend them to you!
Lovely locos and I was part of the group from Brighton who first saved the 1st 08 D3000 from a coal mine in South Wales back in 1986/87 ,Also been lucky to have got to driven one on a heritage railway in the past , a very reliable loco , have also got a Bachmann BR blue one too.
Sam, the only 8 pin decoder I could find to fit was by Gaugemaster, I know you're not old enough to remember the old Toton hump shunts, or Colwick marshalling yard, but the 08 would regularly shunt 50+ loaded wagons about! At Toton they would push the same up a slight gradient and the wagons would go down a 1 in 16 slope at the down hump and 1in 20 at the up hump. Obviously the loco wouldn't go up or down the hump. Great review Sam.
Look closely at the coupling rods. They must be loose on the rear end, as they're not perfectly straight like they should be. In any case, the 08 shunter is nice and useful. Just not keen on the livery, I prefer BR Blue.
I noticed that; looks pretty poor I would say, not helped by the coupling rods being so visible picked out in yellow! Looks like only one axle is driven by the motor, the other wheel sets are driven through the coupling rods. That's not a good arrangement if you need that much slack in the coupling rods to allow for imperfect quartering/machining. With that much slack on the coupling rods you would really want all gear sets coupled primarily via low slack accurately machined gearing, with the coupling rods being more cosmetic rather than actually used for transmitting the motion.
Hi Sam. Admittedly not part of the review but I would dearly like to know about the swarf inside the loco. The colour of the swarf suggests either the worm gear or the flywheel. Have you since thoroughly cleaned the mechanism and done another running-in session? If so, with what result?
I have the previous release of this model, had to fit a stay alive for it to go over points without stalling which I expected to be honest. But runs great now and love it 👍
A stay alive is a very small electronic capacitor which stores energy for the loco to call upon if there is a loss of power, for example dirty track, crossing points etc. they normally give the loco about 10-20 seconds of power in the event the loco loses the current from the track 👍
You know, Sam, the officially well-known B R class,O8 diesel-electric shunting locomotives certainly were very shockingly surprisingly obviously the official inspiration for several of diesels on the Island of Sodor's North Western Railway starting with Devious Diesel himself! Plus, over 950 of 'em were built in exactly 5 different B R workshops with an official,O-6-O wheel configuration as well as the official electric transmission as well as an official English Electric 6KT diesel motor that officially produces 350 horsepower as well as a specifically wonderfully officially official well-known 20 MPH top speed!
for a loco without lights an 8 pin is a great choice, cheaper and easily available and only 4 pins are being used complex decoders are for American locos with working mars lights and ditch lights
Initially I was going to point out the possibility that the missing weight is to make space for a speaker in the engine, but after looking at the inside (and yes, all those shavings were quite surprising) and the 8 pin decoder socket, could it be the chassis metal is a different alloy (ie. cheaper) hence the lighter weight? As usual great review.
Purchased the Bachmann 08 shunter in orange freightliner livery new from Rails for the £79.95 bargain price. Its quiet and runs superb . I am going to try and fit a Hornby hm7000 sound decoder. Hopefully, when I take the body off, I will not find metal filings. This is my first Bachmann locomotive.
Id agree. I have an older one and the twist eventually knocked out the quartering completely and caused the metal tyre to come loose from the wheel. Had to order new wheel set from Bachmann.
hi Sam love your reviews I'm going for the Hornby with a VB lock sound system and extra capacitor for points !!! Bloody expensive!! But I think worth it they both have flaws cosmetic mechanic etc personally from all reviews I'm Hornby you can change cosmetics but the mechanical gearing is superb ..do you agree ..and I'm pre ordering a new one thanks to your reviews I love your content please keep it up for us newbies because it's valuable information for us dying breed of engineers..I used to build test and repair half a million pound 3 phase HV power supplies for ROV'S but I've learnt so much from you as a new collector ( and builder of Greenbrook the new oo guage station on the network of trains ) 😊😊 I'm buying up track and working out layout thank you for your Inspiration and knowledge ...Simon

Hi Sam, what extra infomation about this type of locomotive! In the year 1954 the Netherlands ordered this locomotive i don't know how many, but 12 or more of this locomotive are still operated this day. How cool is that 😁

Hi Sam. I’m not sure if you take requests on what to review next when there’s no new models to cover, but if you do, then I would suggest sometime reviewing the Heljan GWR 47xx 2-8-0. I wanna see if I can get one, but I don’t know if it’s worth it as if I do get it, it would be the first train model I’ve bought, whether it’s new or used(I’m entering the hobby, very slow start but oh well). I know that Heljan hasn’t made them in a while, so I understand if that’s not possible. And if you don’t take requests, then I apologize for not being aware. Either way, keep up the videos, man.
I would've thought this was ex-FGW blue, as HNRC has a bright orange livery (as per the 20/3), or a paler orange and light grey (as per the 07) . I have an even older bachmann 08 in BR blue, having a small PCB instead of the slightly later version with the 8-pin socket. I prefer my hornby 08, a newer tooling than the bachmann one but still getting old and still no lights. The hornby 08 is more powerful and quieter, and more reliable with wiper pickups to the wheel backs. But frankly, for the price hornby are charging, I expect cab and directional/shunting lights, a built in stay-alive, the current standard for DCC (so next18 in this case), and a pre-installed speaker at a minimum.
I only have a class 08 from Wrenn in 00, and one from Roco in H0 scale, but would like to get a modern one too. So what do u think who has the best in 00? Also this loco has no extra functions what so ever so an 8-pin socket is more than enough, I simply can't understand why people even want anything more that it needs to be in there, its not gonna benefit from a "plux" or "next" decoder!
Hi Sam, the shunter looks great and didn't know bachmann did a new one . Channel is great keep up the good work . Did you order a accurascale manor and 37?
Good review here Sam, I still have my bachmann one which is in the BR Blue but it has red coupling rods instead of the normal yellow ones that Blue 08s have, my bachmann 08 is an excellent model although it’s quite an old model now but overall performance of these 08s from my experience is excellent, interesting livery on yours, I didn’t know Harry needle locomotives were blue as I have only seen them in orange.
@@SamsTrains it’s funny, I never liked the look of the Harry Needle one on Bachmann’s product listings, but it actually looks quite nice in your review, to the point where I’m kinda tempted to pick it up, despite the fact that it wouldn’t really fit in with the era I model.
Looks like a great shunter loco! Wanted an 08 as a new shunter about 4 years ago cos my old Hornby 0-4-0 which i used as a yard shunter was giving up. I needed a new shunter quick then I found the NCB 03 which did the trick. 03 is a fantastic loco.
Sam, would you investigate if it is possible to create a battery powered loco that would run on unpowered rails?. (Possible controlled by a Bluetooth device - say Hornbys new system) I could them use old track in the garden to run the loco on. Thanks.
I've often thought of buying a Bachmann 08, I have a pair of Hornby Gronks; an 08 and an 09, and if memory serves me, they were £40 each in 2008! Good grief, prices like that make me feel old!
I purchased one damaged, DB Schenker , but was easy to repair, fitted TTS sound and sugar cube speaker..mine also cuts out on points, Peco bullhead, think it may need a stay alive capacitor ..?
Hi Sam. A little random perhaps, but I was watching an appraisal of yours on a Hornby turntable from several years ago, we’re you mentioned re-wiring via the use of a rotary switch. Unfortunately, I’ve made a fruitless search for the video you recommended as the guy seems to have removed it. Would it be possible to provide some further info please as I’m planning on getting one and would like to do the same? Hope you can help. Thanks.
I nearly did get myself a Bachmann 08, but if I'm gonna be honest, they don't compare to the level of detail that the Hornby ones do plus i'm not a fan of the overscale coupling rods.
@@loggior.speedweed4345 Hate to tell you this but i'm not, plus I bought my gronks second hand for just under £100. Most expensive was my DBS TTS Sound fitted for £50 more. It's not like the Bachmann ones are cheap either.
OK, Sam, please talk me off the ledge. When you did your book entry, it shows you have the Bachmann Class 90 at #7. As a big AC fan, I couldn’t remember you doing a review and looked back through them and couldn’t find one. Am I taking crazy pills?
I have a fleet of 08/09 diesels, mix of Hornby and Bachmann. The worst runner is a Bachmann; the best runner is a Bachmann. No consistency between any of them. The Hornby model is a generation ahead on detail, however. No layout should be without one (or 10, in my case). It would be great if Accurascale did a new tooled version, it would fit nicely into their English Electric series of models.
Keep an eye on your dapol Western. I bought mine at a similar time to you and the motor is starting to slowly die. Mine probably has more miles on it than yours but still keep an eye on it for the motor slowly crawling to a stop. Then you have to shut off the power and the turn the power back up again. 😊
Thanks for the review Sam, but can I ask, do you often complete the review some time after you've bought the model, as the current price at Derails is £127.45, and at your affiliate Amazon link it's £129.39... significantly higher than the £99 that you have quoted?
Yeah unfortunately it does take a while to get the reviews out for non-new releases, prices are correct at the time of filming, but things can change beyond my control annoyingly!
@@SamsTrains we understand Sam, with how highly edited your videos are, your 3D Printing Projects that take ages to film, and your rush to get reviews of the latest models out, it makes sense to put rivers of older models on the back burner for sure. You don’t have control over prices, and retailers like Derails can’t have sales on popular models forever, and the 08’s definitely fall into the category of being popular.
Owning one of the previous generation 08's I can't really see that much on offer here. There is nothing to push buttons to consider upgrading. Nothing like the improvements made to the Class 24.
Hi Sam have you ever tried the hornby 08. I'm not really a diesel fan, but I've heard that there mechanism is better the bachmann's. Cheers Jasper & Willow
Finally, you reviewed a modern Class 08 diesel shunter from Bachmann and it is decent which is all I can say. Hornby's version of this locomotive looks much better Sam. By the way, Hatton's has a few Class 08 diesel shunters from Hornby on their website.
Strange that it has a URL for Needlers. (10.05) Was 08502 still working into the 90's? Needlers are still in buisness, but that domain name is not in use so not a crafty bit of promotion.
Yeah the tooling has those ladders designed into it, but this particular version doesn't have them... so they literally just left them off I guess! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam, I think you should lower your pricing standards. Everything is expensive nowadays. But I definitely agree with the thing about having no lights for this price.
Not everything! This 08's RRP is within £10 of Dapol's *new tooled* manor class, which is a larger loco with more features... and a tender!! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I thought these 08s were from new molds, the only let downs I see to this model is 1. Half cab u need to cut away drivers lower half in order to fit a driver in. 2. The 8pin dcc is bloody stupid considering it's an up to date model. The hornby 08s are very nice detail is just as good as Bachmanns 08 except the cab area on hornby model is fully painted and detailed in side including driver seats, control handles, hand brake etc etc
I’ve got a Bachmann Class 70 that is run with my Hornby LNER steam as a “headend banker engine”, and the detail and interior lighting is amazing. Too bad Hornby hasn’t included cab lighting at least on their 66’s (because Hornby has never cataloged a class 70).
Wonderful review again Sam. These popular shunters could even be seen on this side of the North Sea. Oh dear, so badly put together this one... Normally, it should have been returned of course. What really have agonised us immediately is the omission of running lights and the unsightly gap between the body and running plate tbh. Had this been a decent quality manufacturing job, include lights and bearings, the rrp would be okay for us. But as it is..., totally unacceptable 🙄 She did look so promising at first glance though... Cheerio.
Hi Sam, nice to see you finally got around to an OO guage 08. I do have a soft spot for having actually done some work on the real D3000.... Just a pity the prices have sky rocketed since I bought my models as I would like to expand my range of liveries... P.S just so you know 08s don't have tool boxes... What you called tool boxes are the battery boxes (center Boxes) and the vacuum exhauster boxes (front box) Keep up the good work!
hi there, great video. i would contact Bachmann about the problems you have with it or send it back to the dealer, some one is acting the goat here, should be able to get a hornby 08 for £167,
Is it the Ruston in the siding near the turntable or the light blue diesel with the empty wagons in the sidings also great review on the 08 shunter Sam’s trains (Please pin me if I’m right or wrong)
This one is MUCH more detailed than your old one, Sam, despite not having the ladder(s) on the nose. Quite a bit more printed warning placards and such. Grab irons fitted on the engine-bay doors, and lamp brackets on the front and back. And the livery is much more colorful. Remove the side rods and buffers, and this resembles some of the small “Plymouth”-type switchers here in the states; some with 2 axles, and some had 3. 😊
Personally as long as companies do not charge to much for simply made models, I do not mind picking up a simple model and just adding details to it made by myself. That in my opinion is supposed to be one of the many charms of model railroading, not extreme detail, but just having fun the way you want to with model trains and getting creative with your layouts, locomotives, rolling stock and buildings. That’s what I do. I’m also hoping to do a review video on a Hornby Flying Scotsman train set soon, wish me luck that I enjoy it and furthermore recommend Hornby!
An excellent review, I am wonder if the filings were from the badly fitted electrical connector arm clattering on the spokes during factory testing! If had purchased this loco I would drill the lights out and add directional LEDs. Rapido UK are bringing out a new APT-E in Inter City Blue and Swallow liveries, would considering reviewing this, please?
I'm glad to see that the 08 by Bachmann is still relevant. Mine is the BR 4 all black version, bought last year. Its only real great flaw is the price. GBP 50 less on the RRP would have been better. Overall, it is an aging model, with serious points to correct (lack of lights, no bearings for the axles, 8 pins DCC socket), but you have more than correct performances. Honestly, why not a retooled version ? Or a new model from another manufacturer, maybe Dapol ? I'm in for a BR green version in OO and N.
Nice video Sam very good camera work as usual I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep your lovely camera work up i am really enjoying your lovely videos of running sessions and Reviews when will you be putting your next video on bye for now Philip

A stay alive is a very small electronic capacitor which stores energy for the loco to call upon if there is a loss of power, for example dirty track, crossing points etc. they normally give the loco about 10-20 seconds of power in the event the loco loses the current from the track 👍

You must be rich as all heck then!
@@loggior.speedweed4345 Hate to tell you this but i'm not, plus I bought my gronks second hand for just under £100.
Most expensive was my DBS TTS Sound fitted for £50 more.
It's not like the Bachmann ones are cheap either.
I’ve got it in the Freightliner livery
The Sentinel 0-4-0 is a steam Loco. 😊
OK, Sam, please talk me off the ledge. When you did your book entry, it shows you have the Bachmann Class 90 at #7. As a big AC fan, I couldn’t remember you doing a review and looked back through them and couldn’t find one. Am I taking crazy pills?
haha it's okay! These reviews ended up out of sequence, but the class 90 review is coming!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The coupling rods appear to be flexing as the loco runs along. Is this a trick of the camera or are the coupling rods made of plastic?
I'm Laughed way too much at the Bullman part, I don't think Bullman Likes the Class 08
Any update on the filings thing? Because thats a really dodgy thing to see.
odd loco out is the steam sentinal at the bottom of gordons hill. other than that great video as ever and a fave diesel class of mine
Sam, could you review the Bachmann DCC Sound class 150? It's a brilliant multiple unit and is maybe in the top 5 dispite the price.
That sounds really good - I'll have to look into that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam how many diesel shunters do you have
Port of Felixstowe still use the 08 in freightliner livery 08531 I think
I really want an 08 i had the chance but I opted for the Dapol 68 instead
Owning one of the previous generation 08's I can't really see that much on offer here. There is nothing to push buttons to consider upgrading. Nothing like the improvements made to the Class 24.
I take it this is like the 996th 08 in your collection?
Roco make a pretty... hmm... ok-ish HO version in Dutch and Victorian Railways version as the VR "F Class" shunter as it was known here.
There’s a great real one at the GCR
Hi Sam have you ever tried the hornby 08. I'm not really a diesel fan, but I've heard that there mechanism is better the bachmann's.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I've used a friend's one. It's a bit more refined detail wise, but I prefer the Bachmann performance!
I've never tried a Hornby one, but would like to!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@timbervalleyproductions don’t think the Hornby one would be worthwhile due to the price, but if I’m wrong, then great ig.
Been wanting to get the BR Black 08 for a while now, might take the leap of faith and buy one this year. 😂
I have 1 question Sam, when are you going to do a review on the BR 4mt the 2-6-0 one? Although the price is alot £199:95.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Did I not already do that?? I'll have to check!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains you have a video on the 4-6-0 and the Tank, but I can’t find one on the 2-6-0.
I think they forgot to install the front ladder on your model! Look at 9:52 you can clearly see holes for a ladder to be fitted....
Yeah the tooling has those ladders designed into it, but this particular version doesn't have them... so they literally just left them off I guess!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great review🙂👍
Great running and looking loco
The noise is something that I can get behind since it sounds like it would in real life.
The locomotive that is out of place is the steam sentinel
Sam! My friend! Wonderful review as per usual. 10/10
edit: first
Thank you so much!! :D
That's so cool sam
Thanks Justin! :D
Odd one is the runsten?
I thought these 08s were from new molds, the only let downs I see to this model is 1. Half cab u need to cut away drivers lower half in order to fit a driver in. 2. The 8pin dcc is bloody stupid considering it's an up to date model.
The hornby 08s are very nice detail is just as good as Bachmanns 08 except the cab area on hornby model is fully painted and detailed in side including driver seats, control handles, hand brake etc etc
To me It's somewhat like what would be in A Train set. Or a Hornby railroad range loco
Bachmann certainly do put higher quality locos in their sets - it's beyond the Hornby Railroad range in detail though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Poor bullman got left behind…! And was that a sneaky steam sentinel masquerading as a diesel shunter?
I know people who have the hornby railways model and they do say it is better, but I am not convinced based on that price though. Good video Sam.
I’ve got a Bachmann Class 70 that is run with my Hornby LNER steam as a “headend banker engine”, and the detail and interior lighting is amazing. Too bad Hornby hasn’t included cab lighting at least on their 66’s (because Hornby has never cataloged a class 70).
its amaswing noone has done the Southerns variant with a radically dfferent rear cab.
Cheerio.
Nice little 08 shunter😊👍🤩😎
Thanks Sam! :D
What you called tool boxes are the battery boxes (center Boxes) and the vacuum exhauster boxes (front box)
Keep up the good work!
I manage to get the br blue version for £60 in new condition and honestly think it's the best bachmann model I own
How many O8s do you have Sam
Nice model Sam but i must say the Hornby 08 is beter but the Bachmann 08 is cheaper.
Why is the side rods wiggling
hi there, great video. i would contact Bachmann about the problems you have with it or send it back to the dealer, some one is acting the goat here, should be able to get a hornby 08 for £167,
Awesome video today Sam beautiful loco
Love the livery on those 08s, wondering if the shaving came from the factory
Is it the Ruston in the siding near the turntable or the light blue diesel with the empty wagons in the sidings also great review on the 08 shunter Sam’s trains
(Please pin me if I’m right or wrong)
Hola buen dia excelente video muy buena la locomotora muchas gracias por subir el video abrazo grande
Hi Sam. The premium Hornby 08 has not changed at all since they started doing it so if you wanted to get one it doesn’t have to be the very latest one
I think the Hornby one is much better.
I never buy these 08 Shunters new, always buy the Bachmann/Hornby one's as second hand.
