- This gem of a film captures George Best at a pivotal point in his career. Best, his parents and Sir Matt Busby talk about the man who many reckon could have been the greatest footballer ever. In 1969 George Best is still only 22 but already a footballing superstar; playing for Manchester United he's won the league twice and been part of the first English team to win the European Cup. Football comes easily to him and with dedication he could be the best, but the 'pop star' lifestyle is competing for his attention.
Although at most only the back of his head can be seen, the interviews are by Michael Parkinson, a couple of years before his move to BBC and the start of his eponymous, and iconic, series of interviews.

His all round abilities were out of this world. He didn't have any practiced repetitive tricks, just natural body swerves, he could beat anyone, and did.

George Best was and remains my football hero. Never seen a better player even though I have stood in the Stretford End and watched Ronaldo and Rooney.

Me Dad would swear Duncan Edwards was the greatest player he ever saw. But said Best came the closest.

Bitter-sweet emotions watching this: a footballing genius, a highly intelligent guy and a nice fella. And then the issues around fame, drinking and the problems that were over the horizon. Thanks for sharing this. RIP George.

I saw George play at Hampden in the Cup v Celtic in 1980. Even though I was a young teenager at the time, I knew his time had passed, despite him still being 'box office'. I would love to have seen him '66/'67/'68.

Imagine George today. Playing on the beautiful playing surfaces of today. Not being kicked and hacked by players whose sole job was to put George out of the game. George would have been up there with Messi and Ronaldo.
Exactly right his skills would be emphasized by the current way the game is played but he did well even under the circumstances.
You're so right: I think any of the great players of the 50s, 60s or 70s would really shine extra brightly in today's game. You mention playing surfaces, and protection from referees, but there are other factors too: until the early 70s (I think) footballs were made of leather which soaked up moisture in wet conditions, and became heavier, then a new design was introduced, with a thin layer of plastic lamination to waterproof the ball. The old boots were heavy and very crude by comparison with today's sleek slippers: a star of today's game would surely struggle to reproduce his form if forced to play under those conditions and with those boots!
In my opinion George was better than them he was 2 footed, he could tackle, great at heading, new how to ride tackles without going down. He scored plenty of goals and created hundreds of assists. George had everything a top class footballer needed.

Its brilliant footage and its also deeply sad. Here he was in 1969 aged just 23 and already that extraordinary and beautiful talent was on the wane because he simply couldn't control himself. He was not the greatest footballer - he didn't have the leadership qualities and maturity to deserve comparison with EG Cruyff or Di Stefano - but he was without any real argument the most elegant and graceful talent ever and it was just about to desert him when this was made.....priceless footage of him dancing with the ball in this as well.

I met George towards the end of his career he was a really nice guy I was a hearts supporter and he signed for Hibs his first game was against St Mirren average gate for that game was 4000 I went to support St Mirren the gate that day because Best was playing was over 15000 he was miles a head of everybody on the park he was outstanding they talk about players now a days he was better than any of them rest in peace George you I am 66 years old and I still have not seen a better player than you and don't think I will Pele wasn't a bad player and he said George was the best player he had ever seen.

and the beauty of it was that he always knew exactly what to do at the end of that dribble - he read the game so well. Avery intelligent player. And tough. These Messis and Ronaldos would have been kicked in their whole career less than Best would have been in a single game at Elland Road or Anfield.
And Garrincha had one leg significantly shorter than the other! I wonder if that helped or hindered.
Still blows my mind that this guy got kicked out of the Beatles and not only didn't let it stop him but goes on to become a footballing legend. Best is best!

Don’t give up the day job
You can see in his interview with Parky his future problems ahead, almost fated really. By the time the 70s came, opponents were much wiser to him, yes there was still magic moments & that was just it. Moments. By then the Team was the rule. Everyone defended, everyone attacked. But still, like the Beatles, there was only one George Best.
August to December 1971 his last great surge at the top which practically singlehandedly took Utd 5pts clear at the top of the table. Then the sad decline set in and that glittering career with the exception of a few sparks was over. Thanks George for some great memories 😎
The overlooked, drunken, glass-ravaged injury to his foot in Spain in the early months of ‘72- I think- robbed him of his pace.
Those few months saw him at his absolute best. His hattrick against West Ham was magical.

You are correct, he was very humble. He did not want to express his views and influence others in his thinking. Obviously he did not want to be regarded as a role model, he sounded like a genuinely good guy.
His autobiography is just brilliant. Searingly honest, funny, witty and often hard to believe.
I am a huge United fan,but only got to se him play for Fulham with Rodney Marsh against Hereford, sometime round 76-77. There were flash's of his genius, but he was heavier and the pace was gone. However, in his prime, and there is plenty of footage from that time, he was the best in the world. A modest, kind man with little or no ego.Because alcohol had an early grip on him, he was gone by 27,when he should have been in his prime. If he was around today he would be whisked off to rehab and the problem would be taken care of.If you can look beyond that problem and judge him on his football skills, you are looking at a player who was the best in the world .RIP George
I agree though I would say he was actually gone at 25. Look back at his career. He was brilliant in the autumn of 1971 when 25 and after that did nothing at all. Ran away in Summer 1972 when just turned 26. His top class career was over by the time he was 25. There was the drink but people forget the punishment his legs took as a virtually ever present marked man with the hard man assassins on his trail throughout the glory years. He didn't wear shin pads. We hear his teammates talk of seeing his legs marked and battered after games. It all adds up. He wasn't only almost incredibly gifted, he was also tough as teak and able to run through the pain. The Greatest.

His frustration and houdini acts started when he realized reinforcements were not coming.The kicking he took, well that was the nature of the game then, and I never heard him complain.In fact I cannot recall a time when he was injured,EVER. Suspensions,yes. Injuries ,no. His greatest asset, Balance. Unbelievable. Just a movement of his hips, and two defenders were gone the wrong direction.Gold, pure gold. His likes will not be seen again.

I think on his finest day,George Best had few equals..But as u heard him say in the interview,he found it all very easy on the football field,once he got over his initial nerves&filled out a bit,got stronger and more confident..Then it was like water off a Ducks back!
.But as the N.I Journalist pointed out very wisely at 17.12..he has to change his ways,play more for the (Man u or N. In) team and not only for George Best!
But he was a fantastically,naturally gifted player,and for those who got to see him,provided memories that never erased..
But I always feel we were left with "A Glass half full".because at 26/27 he should have been at his Football playing peak&hitting the headlines for his on the field activities &,not being written about in. the "Gossip columns" and sports pages(often for all the wrong reasons,,!)
..And unfortunately he did seem to enjoy(was comfortable)with the Celeb side of life,which wouldn't have been to bad if he was doing the Business on the field and Man u,were "Flying high" but neither were doing well!
..But George B,u gave the "Paying Public" plenty to remember&talk about...George Best R.I.P..

Northern Ireland is part of the UK therefore he has and had and did have the right to consider himself British.

Yes stopped playing only 4 years later but in truth his career was finished in 1972 and his talent was waning at least 2 years before that......as indicated in the film he was already suffering from his lifestyle even in 1969. A tragedy but for 3 or 4 years he played like no one else ever has or ever will.......poetry in motion.

I have read alot of books of players george played with at this time, and some admitted they didnt like glass from the first time they mett her. She thought she was to good for every 1. A saw her talking about george on a dvd 2 years ago and at age 74 and a budist a thinck she seemend so diffrent. the posh act and voice had gone. Strait away i had to laugh at her. If you go by the inflation calculators £20,000 to £30,000 is roughly between £320,000 and £485,000 now. Top players earn that a week these days.

He didn't fulfill his full potential because of his lack of discipline and not knowing what he truly wanted in life. He chose the night life instead. This should be a lesson for other budding talents that one cannot have the cake and eat it. Not everyone will survive to old age and yet be successful living a life full of excesses like Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy was an accident which others won't survive.
